Donut

Reading Donut’s story, skin story, and pieces in White Truffles’ story one can draw that Donut’s tale is that of a soldier. Ultimately she does in a way serve her god, she’s called a holy woman, she does in a way care for her people but she’s no priestess. She’s referred to as a dependable blade of the cathedral by the archbishop himself and in her own words “Before becoming the commander of the Grace Army, I was just a girl.”

Donut’s relationship with the cathedral is one that is concerning. She serves her god through them, does what they tell her. She rarely disagrees or questions her superiors and often you do not find herself thinking of what she wants to do, instead of it’s what she should or what she is supposed to do. She sees food souls as a gift to humans from her deity and seems to ignore her own humanity. Furthermore, the actions her cathedral calls for are not that of an organization that’s good at its core.

They do fight the fallen angels to protect humanity is technically a good thing but their methods are very worrying. “Those who don’t understand shall be taught by the scripture. Those who disdain shall be awed by blood and iron.” “Just like we said before, the Church of Divine Grace needs not just the people’s awe, but also their belief in the Lord. Very well, to put it simple, we also need to spread the scriptures.” These aren’t the policies of an organization there just to help. They also seem to support forcing refugees to read the scripture and join their army for protection against the fallen angels, almost mirroring how past crusaders and conquerers would force people to convert for resources or even under threat of death. Donut doesn’t seem to really see the issue with this, in a way she’s very naive despite being a commander.

She does behave softer with White Truffle compared to her interactions with Canele and the refugees. It shows a bit more of a difference between her soldier persona and her possible different beliefs before the grace army. Even despite being friendly with White Truffle, she is suddenly much more firm when wanting her to research what happened to her sister and letting her know that they may have to destroy Black Truffle should she be unable to help.

Something I find strange is that there isn’t really a progression with Donut, she’s not shown to be getting better or finding more empathy. We don’t see how what she does for the cathedral effects her if it does, or the trauma of constantly fighting the war against fallen angels. The story comes off as incomplete, a build-up for a later turn we have yet to see.

In conclusion, Donut, although she fights for her people is aligned with an organization that is quite worrying. The practices it condones and teaches are not necessarily good and it feels like it leading up to a future story of her realizing this. I am certainly interested to see if we will ever get to see her realization about her superiors and how she might cope with it but for now, we are only left with the story of the girl turned holy weapon for better or worse.

Go nuts for walnuts!

Following my previous comic about in-game mechanics, I decided to draw something about summoning. It would be funny if summoning a food soul meant plucking them out of wherever they happen to be at the moment.

I prefer to separate game mechanics from the story universe (as with the shard situation) for the sake of simplicity. Still, I love imagining how they might work in reality.

Tortoise Jelly is very confused, but is it because of Boston Lobster’s presence or the fact that they opened so many bags of walnuts?
