ON THIS DAY
On Sept. 15, 1963, four Black girls were killed when a bomb went off during Sunday services at a Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama, in the deadliest act of the civil rights era.
(via NYTimes)
I'll love you forever: lovers locked in 6000 year embrace. Â :)
Mantua is the city to which Romeo was exiled, and told of Julietâs death.  It is also the setting for composer Guiseppe Verdiâs opera Rigoletto, about another pair of star-crossed lovers.  So itâs fitting that these 6 000 year-old skeletons were found there, face-to-face with legs and arms intertwined and locked in an eternal embrace.
When they were first found in 2007, it was believed that they could have been killed. Â But forensic evidence suggests a more peaceful death. Â They possibly froze to death huddled together one night, or were more likely buried together in their position. Â Called the Lovers of Valdaro, they are a man and woman between 18 and 20 years old.
They are now temporarily displayed in the Museum of Mantua, and a local association is seeking to secure the lovers a permanent room where visitors from around the world can see them.
