A friendly reminder that…

- Noctis lost both of his parents before he even turned 21. - Ignis’s only real family was with his uncle at the palace and with Noctis. - The only two in the Amicitia family to survive the fall was Iris and Gladiolus. - Ravus lost everything he ever wanted to protect: family, fortune, and honor. - Prompto lived his entire life feeling like he never belonged, only to have it verified when he found out he was and MT. - Cor was only 15 years old when he witnessed the deaths of almost everyone around him and was the only survivor of it all. - Regis lived his life knowing that no matter how good of a life his son would have, Noctis would be doomed to die. - Lunafreya was physically and mentally abused by the empire and essentially had to cope with it all alone. - The last time Noctis, Prompto, Ignis, and Gladiolus got to see the dawn was over ten years ago.

No offense but gladio reminds me of a power fantasy for white men and is a complete asshole. I had a hard time really liking him.

It’s fine if that’s your opinion, but I think overall I personally liked him. My issue with him was that it seemed like the writers were more concerned with keeping him macho and manly feeling than making sure he was a consistent character. Like, getting in your face and yelling at you to get your princely shit together, then dipping out for a little solo mission action for an entire chapter of the game? What the hell! And a lot of his lines didn’t feel like writers going, “Hey, what would Gladio, the character, say about this?” and were a lot more “What would a tough character say here?” One of his most endearing character traits is his love of cup fucking noodles, but even that was kinda just there for product placement that fell to him by process of elimination, like “We need one of the boys to promote this product…Ignis would never admit to liking prepackaged, sodium-bomb food like that…it’d be too obvious to pick Noctis or Prompto to be the one who loved it…so who does that leave? Gladio.” At the end of the game, I felt really close to Noctis and Ignis after seeing all that they had suffered and lost along the way of this quest, and Prompto was always really open and let us see his struggles and fears so it felt like we really got to know him. And then it’s just like…Gladio, that crazy son of a gun. He loved him some cup noodles and talkin all deep. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(that’s a bit hyperbolic and I did really generally find him likable enough as a character, but I’m trying to level with you here, lol)

SORRY TO JUMP IN ON THIS Blah I can’t really agree with Anon, and agree partway with OP. Gladio’s a great big contradiction and I love that about him. You expect him to be this over-macho dude, and sure he can friggin’ kick some bottom, but he’s so? much? more???  he winds down by reading books, he loves his little sister more than anything in the world (thank goodness she’s tough too, or he’d commit treason for her), he genuinely loves the chocobros. He has to be tough of course, that’s his JOB, not even a job he’s chosen but his lineage. He was literally born to do this. He tells Noct to pull his fucking socks up sometimes because if he doesn’t, Prom would let him get away with anything and Iggy would just do shit for him. He has to shape Noct, far too young and far too swiftly, to accept a burden that’s unfair and cruel. Nobody wants to do that to their friend, but Gladio does because when it comes to choosing what is right and what is easy, he chose the former. (he’s a secret wizard and Dumbledore taught him well.) I loved seeing a character that I thought was an arsehole and growing to really care about him, mostly how he acted as a dad/big brother to everyone. I got my own reasons for wanting that kind of interaction but I think many people can appreciate that kind of familial love.  We don’t get to see how he matures and acts, really, following the timeskip, without a Prince to shape. (i mean obviously he got hotter) We know they didn’t see each other much during that time, does he reevaluate how he acted in that time? regret how he spoke? wish he’d been softer? I don’t think he saw another choice available to him. Anyway, if you don’t cry when you see him crying are you even human?

Wanna add that the moments where Gladio is an asshole, while difficult to play though, are actually fantastically tackled in this game. Because he’s an example of a character who’s internalised a bunch of toxic attitudes (like ‘guys gotta be tough, even when their lovers / friends die’) to the point of hurting his friends even further, no matter how accidentally. Through the writing, and the voice acting, you get the impression that Gladio genuinely believes his tough talk will make Noctis shape up, he genuinely believes he’s doing the right thing and doens’t see how much it’s affecting Noct.

But more amazingly, the writers don’t present Gladio’s attitude as if it’s a good thing. They specifically go out of the way to paint his troublesome attitudes in a negative light, and don’t condone it. The focus is on the emotional fallout of his words. Unlike a lot of older media which IS a white male power fantasy (I mean James Bond, come on, a great example, or The Mechanic, or Indiana Jones), which has characters saying similar things as Gladio but there’s no ‘downside’, e.g. you’re MEANT to think Bond is cool for being so detached and encouraging others to keep a ‘stiff upper lip’ and not cry or show emotion. But you’re not meant to think Gladio is cool for doing the same thing. By the time you get to Fodina Caestino, that dungeon en route to Tenebrae, it’s abundantly clear that Gladio’s attitudes are affecting the party to a rather severe degree.

So yeah, I like Gladio, although I hate his attitude. I can totally see why anyone would have difficulty liking him. Although I think it’s probably more appropriate to say Gladio suffers from having a power fantasy, rather than being a power fantasy. And I like his flaws, because they are not glossed over. It’s very real.

Also like to add that we never see Gladio process his own grief at the loss of his father and his home. That’s some heavy shit to have to deal with at 23, along with the amount of responsibility he shoulders. He’s lost so much, but doesn’t know how to deal with it except through anger.

I think his actions following Altissia, as well as his behavior when they seek out Titan, may have a lot to do with that. To me, these are the moments in which he’s unable to deal with a massive amount of complicated feelings regarding his duty, his family’s sacrifice for the crown, and perhaps his own survivor’s guilt wrapped up in his grief. He lashes out at Noct because he needs Noct to be worthy of all he’s lost.
