/The craft, science, and art of skimming/
Skimmatic is a digital reading environment designed from the cognitive ground up to facilitate deep and comprehensive reading of academic writing. Inspired by the “The Harvard Course in Reading and Study Strategies,” we wanted to design an application that would help users develop appropriate digital reading skills in an implicit fashion. We identified three major areas of reading skills to be fostered by our product: skimming, annotating, and reviewing.
The projects was above all an exquisite lesson in Design Thinking process. The final design reflects three iterations based on used and expect feedback.
Feel more than free to play with the interactive wireframe I built with Illustrator and PowerPoint. The clickable elements on each page are highlighted with light blue boxes. Alternatively check out the static pdf version.
I wrote a comprehensive story of Skimmatic and its consideration as a business opportunity applying the frameworks from Harvard Business School's Online Economy course (http://www.onlineeconomy.org/). Written in a style of a case study, and thus can be quite entertaining.
For the over-achievers, a very early testing app we wrote to collect data on the effectiveness of the skimsheet skimming aide can be still seen here http://skimmatic.herokuapp.com/ (as of 7/2013; It will probably disappear eventually as it has outlived its usefulness)
Thanks to dr.David Docterman for guidance on the design process, and dr. Abigail Lipson from Bureau of Study Counsel for reading strategies consulting.
On this project I was the UI and UX designer, and a business analyst.
