They both develop an unhealthy and toxic attachment with their own idealized version of the other to the point where whenever either one deviates from the other's glamorized rendition of them they start freaking out and they both get into extremely explosive arguments about it

but then eventually they are painfully forced to come to the conclusion that they are really harmful for each other so they agree to hold each other at gunpoint with one loaded bullet and periodically fire the gun until one or both of them die (twist: one of them may or may not have secretly left their gun barrel empty without the other knowing, or both of them might have it empty who knows)
