You had moved back to your room, sorting your collection of pebbles, plants and feathers you had found. Yet you couldn’t ignore the uncomfortable silence of the house… upon the others finding out you had been twelve when you were forced to start fighting.
You hadn't yet learnt enough to be able to truly communicate where you came from, you lips and throat still unaccustomed to sounds outside of grunts and huffs and bellows.
You wanted to tell them, to explain the visions rhat haunted you, why you had pinned Johnny a few weeks ago. Perhaps then you could truly be part of their group, you had seen how they interacted with each other , the closeness they shared, you remembered when you had playfully headbutted John.
You hadn't realised how much you had missed physical touch, you had spent so long associating touch with cruelty and pain, you hadn't craved touch as a form of connection in years.
You gently cradled the white shell with brown stripes… something so small and fragile, it deserved to be held with care, it deserved… better.

John knocked on the doorframe before stepping forward, it must’ve been time for your lesson. You gave a huff of acknowledgement; he sat quietly next to you placing the vocabulary book to the side rather than opening it like he normally did. He took in a deep breath, a small swirl of smoke leaving his mouth.
“You’ve been through quite a lot haven’t you then… I suppose you really want to talk about it ?”
He avoided looking at you directly, you could see a slight redness to his eyes.
“Yes”.
The word was so simple, so easy as it passed from your lips and yet it held so much behind it.
He sighed with a gentle nod before pulling out a book, it was small and the cover was worn.
“This… is a book I’ve used with all of the lads, we’ve all got our troubles. It’s got words that… that might help you express what you’ve gone through”
He offers it out, watching as you open it, you look at the pages, some words were underlined, small notations in the margin.
You trace over a few of the words, gently sounding them out as best you could, one word that stuck out to you had been underlined in bold. It didn’t sound like a normal word as it said it.
“PTSD… what does… it mean?”
John shuffled a little closer to you, gently reaching out a wing to cocoon you.
“It’s a shorter way to say Post Traumatic Stress Disorder… me and the lads all have it, it presents different. I’m protective of them all, the lads sometimes flinch at certain sounds, like you do… it’s your brain trying to protect your body. It looks for patterns, things it associates with pain and fear and tries to let you know when the pattern is there again, even when its safe”
It was… familiar, in a strange way, it was nice to have a word for it, you continued reading softly, John sat quietly, letting you work through the pages, the only sound besides the occasional murmur being the shifting of the pages.
“The … the things I see, like nightmares when I’m awake… what are they called?”
John made a choked sound, gently rubbing his brow, taking a breath before addressing you.
“Those sound like flashbacks… do you get them a lot?”
You shrugged; you didn’t have that many… did you?
“Sometimes… like when I pushed Johnny, or when I headbutted you…”
You looked up at him, his face was flushed a little, his eyes were wet, you hadn't meant to make him cry.
“Did it feel like we might hurt you?”
His voice cracked ever so slightly, you nodded… the feeling of terror was still clear in your chest, that part of your mind that demanded you fight back.
“You… you want to talk about what happened? Where you got that collar?”
You thought… part of you wanted to let it all out, the logical part of you knew that was too big of a leap, shaking your head you looked at john again, expecting disappointment or even frustration, but he was smiling.
“That’s perfectly fine sweetheart… we will all be here when you’re ready”.

Your speaking and reading practice continued as usual after that, although there was a slight heaviness in Johns presence. He left the little book on your bed, sighing softly, you couldn’t stand the sadness in how he moved.
Without thinking you stood in front of him and headbutted him.
Your own horns meeting his, you froze, waiting to see how he’d respond to your playful challenge.
“You wanna playfight calf? You sure?”
You huffed and shoved back, forcing him to brace himself , his tail giving an excited lash.
“It’s cramped in here, don’t wanna damage anything, why don’t we head outside”

Outside you were quick to shove John with a huff, shifting your weight in anticipation for his rebuttal.
He pushed back with his horns, it was something, but not quite what you wanted, he was testing you , trying to find the limit.
You reared back and shoved harder, an audible clack echoing against the cabin walls.
“Fuck you got some spark huh, sweetheart?”
He chuckled, smoke billowing from his nose as his tail extended to balance himself, now you’d done it.
He rears back and slams forward, your feet skid slightly before you shoved back, the familiar strain in your powerful neck and haunches. You grinned, delighting in feeling strong again, huffing in delight.
You hadn't noticed the others coming to watch, they had heard the sound of horns colliding and your excited huffs and had quietly congregated.
Playfighting wasn’t unusual for hybrids, but they hadn't seen Price play for a while, and they’d certainly never seen him headbutting.
You had gotten distracted at the sound of Johnny whining ever so slightly, Price took the opportunity to shove you even harder, you barely braced in time.
He chuckled at your disgruntled expression before firmly shoving you over, bracing his arms so he didn’t land on top of you.
Everyone paused, he hadn't meant to actually knock you over, the thought of potentially triggering you was mortifying.
Only you didn’t seem to mind, instead breaking into peals of laughter.
Ghosts shoulders shook before a chuckle broke past his lips.
The tension melted away, John helped you to your feet, gently ruffling your hair.
“Not bad calf”.

John was the first to enquire about the various treasures you had found in the woods.
You eagerly rummaged through them before pulling out a small rock, it was a vibrant green, you eagerly shoved it into Johns hands.
“Shiny…l-like scales”
Price couldn’t help but smile at your stuttered comparison, the rock had a metallic shine to it, not too dissimilar from the scales that adorned his body.
“Huh it is… that’s an awful good find”
You then shifted your attention to Gaz, you had found various red feathers and a small grey shell with black stripes, matching Gazs own feathers.
“You sure found a lot of these huh? And this kinda matches my wings”
You nodded eagerly before moving on to Johnny, handing over a small four-leaved clover, a small bundle of various sweet-smelling herbs and a grey-blue gemstone.
Johhny’s nose twitched as he investigated the herbs humming happily, tail wagging a little.
“Smells great hun, but why the blue stone?”
You still had to force your mouth to cooperate, gesturing to your own face and then his.
“E-eyes… same colour as… as pebble”
They were all quietly delighted to see your speech improving so quickly.
Finally, you turned to Ghost, who was trying hard to not look too excited to see what you had brought him.
“Let’s see what you’ve got then lov”
His arms were crossed but you could see that glimmer in his eye, the slight crease of a smirk behind his mask.
You had been particularly proud of this find showing him a small shell, at first glance it was just a simple cone shape with black with white markings, you pointed at the largest white marking.
“l-looks like mask…”
Simon feels his heart twist painfully, part of him upset that you saw him as the mask, as Ghost… the fact some part of him was still too scared to let you know him, to know Simon.
As if sensing his discomfort, perhaps you did, you showed him a small stone, it was simple , brown and smoothed from however long it had sat in the small stream you’d found it in.
“Huh …. Thanks …”
You huffed in annoyance at his underwhelming response, grabbing his hand to direct the stone into the light, it held a similar metallic property to the stone you’d given John, only this one had browns, greens and flickers of an almost golden colour…
“Kind eyes…”
You had said it softly, just loud enough that it had stayed like a secret between you and Ghost. You closed his hand around the pebble and the shell with a pat before taking what remained of your collection and taking them to your room.
Ghost… Simon was somewhat stunned… his kind eyes blurring just slightly...

You had returned, washed your hands after some gentle prompting from Gaz and eagerly eaten your breakfast.
“Like this... eggs? Is called? Like from birds?”
Soap nods, chewing on his extra helping of bacon.
“Yep, that’s right, eggs. You can cook em all sorts of ways, this is scrambled eggs”.
You nodded down at the plate, the idea of food being prepared in different ways wasn’t new, it just wasn’t something you had had the luxury of in the arena, you had grown used to just shovelling flavourless mush and stale bread into your mouth, there food was a matter of survival, of fighting another day.
Getting used to the pleasure of flavourful foods was a welcome adjustment, one that Kyle was all too excited to assist in. John kept having to remind him that too sudden of a change to your diet could make you sick.
As you looked at the strange herd you had somehow joined, you still had questions…
“How…. Did you all …. Meet?”
The words were quiet, steady as you slowly worked through the advice and teaching John had given you over the past weeks.
The others paused, your question made sense, they were an odd mix of hybrids after all. John cleared his throat.
“We’re ex-military”
You tilted your head, the word was new and unfamiliar, you recalled vague mutterings of the word from the guards, but its actual meaning was unclear to you. Clearly your confusion was plain on your face, prompting Johnny to explain it to you.
They used to fight, kinda like how you did, but they had chosen to fight, to use their skills to fight for their country. They would use their hybrid traits but also weapons to subdue and kill their enemies.
You nodded slowly, you couldn’t imagine someone choosing to fight.
“How old… start fighting?”
John started, puffing out his chest, he was sixteen when he joined.
Johnnys tail wagged and Gazs wings perked up, stating they both joined at eighteen, ghost gruffly huffed out he was same age when he joined too.
You paused, how old had you been when you were taken from your home?
You knew you were small, but you weren’t actually sure how old you were now, your master didn’t care to celebrate his property’s birthday.
You recalled the last birthday you had celebrated, you had been excited, waking up early to bother your mother and father, eager to start the day. You remembered how your mother had decorated, using flowers and buntings. You weren’t sure what the number adorning them was called, so instead you traced it onto the table with your finger.
“Jesus Christ... twelve … was that when you started fighting hun?”
You nodded; there was a new discomfort that fille the room after Johnnys stunned exclamation. You knew it wasn’t great, from your understanding you were the odd one out, not only the only one who never volunteered but also the youngest when the fighting started.
“Fuck... you were just a calf weren’t you”
John had moved behind you, gently placing a hand on your shoulder, his thumb rubbing soothing circles into your shoulder blade.
They all looked… unsettled by the new information, but Ghost….Ghost looked mortified, his eyes watering, you huffed sadly, you hadn't meant to make him cry.
You moved over to him, instinct pushing you to nuzzle into his side to comfort him, you looked at his face only to see he was crying more?
“It’s not your fault… just… worlds not fair yeah?”

The house shifted awake slowly, easing into wakefulness, a luxury they had all learnt to relish since retirement.
Johnny stirred slightly with a yawn, stretching with a gentle curse, burying his face into Ghosts shoulder.
The two of them had become closer after Soaps injury, ghost helped him through physically therapy, through the pain, through the hallucinations, a steady hand and a comforting hug.
The good days were becoming more frequent, but the bad days seemed sharper.
Ghost could feel a slight tension building in Johnnys spine, the first flickers of disruption in their peace.
A cruel remnant of the trauma he had survived, forcing Johnny’s muscles to tug and force his spine to arch, tearing him from his half-dazed state.
“Fuck, Simon?!”
The panic was swift, Ghost didn’t even have to think before he moved , one hand reaching for the electric heat pack and pressing it to Johnny’s back.
“It’ll be ok johnny , just need to breathe through it.”
Ghost kept an eye on johnny whilst also using his free hand to rummage through the drawer by his bed, he kept a stash of Johnnys medications, just in case.
He remembers all too well when he didn’t have them, of having to leave johnny alone, even if just for a moment, his whines and cries, the look of pure relief when he returned. He couldn’t do that to johnny , not for as long as he could help it.
This spasm was cruel, locking Johnny’s mouth shut, ghost hated having to pry this teeth apart to force the pills into Johnny’s throat , hated the way the taste made johnny gag.
He pet his ears, humming softly, silently praying to whatever god or entity may have been watching that the medication would work faster. Johnny whined louder, the sharp smell of urine .
“It’s alright, know you can’t help it, I’ll sort it later ok”
Ghost truly didn’t care, he’d been covered in far worse, from substances he could identify to those he couldn’t, compared to that , it was a small price for Johnny.
Johnnys tail twitched with discomfort, his breathing took a while to steady itself, sniffling into Ghosts shoulder.

The trembling and tension slowly subsided.
“Fuck I’m sorry-”
“nope no apologisin’, it’s not your fault. Anywhere still hurt?”
Johnny shook his head, his cheeks still streaked with tears, of embarrassment or pain… Ghost didn’t care, brushing them away all the same.
Ghost silently stood, lifting Johny with him, carrying him to the bathroom.
He filled the tub and helped Johnny get situated before moving to strip the sheets and throw anything soiled into the washing machine.
As he walked past the washroom, he spotted the small wooden bison he had carved on the shelf by the door, bison must’ve been outside… they’d have to work out your actual name at some point.
He returned to Johnny; his face was still flushed but the trembling hitch in his breath had subsided.
Johnnys eyes were glossy with tears, his ears still pinned back slightly.
“You know you’d do the same if it were me”
Ghost knew johnny, he wished he could somehow convince Johnny that he didn’t care, that he would rather clean him up every single day than live without him
Ghost saw Johnny attempt to avert his gaze, but he gently grasped his shoulder, giving it a firm reassuring squeeze
“None of that mutt… I’m just happy you’re alive … so happy”
He ever so gently pressed his fingers into Johnnys scalp, Johnny whines, his eyes looking up at him big and watery.
“Mask off?”
Ghost chuckled, tugging the mask off, rustling his dirty blonde hair , he knew johnny liked to ‘see him properly’.
Johnny gently rubs his thumb over Ghosts cheek, scarred and alive.
Johnny savoured the gentle rub of Ghosts calloused fingers on his ears.
“promise… promise you won’t leave me Simon”
“I promise”

The rest of the house had stirred awake, Kyle was busy preening whilst Price sorted breakfast for once, making some simple scrambled eggs and bacon.
Ghost helped Johnny dry off and get dressed, acting as a support as he guided him to the dining room table, Price barely even looked up before adding additional bacon to sizzle on the pan, a small pick-me-up for the wolf hybrid they all cared for.
Gaz joined them shortly after, helping John plate up breakfast.
“See the wooden bison is being put to use, when do you reckon they’ll be back?”
John gently covered up the remaining plate to keep it warm.
“They’ll be back soon enough for now, eat up lads, don’t let it get cold”
As they all sat around the table eating, they couldn’t all help but be glad they’d met each other, that they’d all survived and could now live out their lives together.
The sound of muffled steps approached the front door, seems their bison had come home, by their rushed pace , it seemed they were excited about something.
The door opened and they rushed in, their hands full of… pebbles and feathers?
They eagerly plopped them down on the table in the empty space with a delighted huff, their ears perked up and tail flicking happily.
Price couldn’t help but chuckle, their eagerness reminded him of a young dragon eagerly collecting for their first hoard.
“Soo, what’s all this then sweetheart?”

The clothes you were given smelt faintly of Ghost and Kyle. The shirt hung off your frame and the shorts just about fit.
You stepped out of the bathroom, Johnny looked delighted, tail wagging.
“You look so much happier, and you smell nice too!”
Ghost gave you a nod, you were still damp, especially your hair, drips of water running down your back.
“Come on then, I recon’ breakfast is ready“ Ghost was already moving towards the dining room as he said it.
Johnny stumbled alongside you, braced on the wall, you held out your arm to him, silently supporting him as you moved to follow Ghost.

You sat at the table with the others, Kyle was plating up food for everyone, you didn’t know what all the foods were, but you knew it smelt delicious. The others chatted whilst they ate, John looked over at you and your now clean fur.
“uh huh…” It was quiet but more than they’d heard from you before , you could hear Johnnys tail thudding against his chair.
“Which foods your favourite? That way I’ll know to make more for you” Kyle gestured to the spread of foods on the table, you looked at them all before gesturing to a plate of round brown things.
“Those are hash browns , hash browns”
John put gentle emphasis on each syllable, a clear attempt to coax you to repeat it.
You did your best to ignore the multiple eyes on you, forcing your throat and lips to coordinate and recreate a soft Ha sound.
“Haaa- ssshhh brrroowwn”
It was slow, dragged out and quiet, but it was yours, at that was clearly more than enough for the rest of them.
Johnny was practically vibrating in his seat, Kyles feathers were puffed up in pride, Johns tail lashed gently and smoke curled around his head, Ghost made a soft series of rhythmic grunts and nodded at you.
To your relief they didn’t linger on the topic, continuing to eat and chat as usual as you enjoyed your breakfast, and most importantly … your hash browns.

John continued his lessons with you , gently coaxing you to read along with him where you could.
His patience a lifeline through the various setbacks and challenges, the arena hadn't nurtured the ability to speak.
It had encouraged bellows and snarls, aggression and the beastly displays of hybrid strength. Psrt of you was confused, how had these four hybrids been allowed to own a house, where you weren’t afforded anything until you escaped.
John must have seen the question forming and more importantly, your frustration at your current inability to vocalise it.
He gently pat your knee the way he always did to signal the lesson was over, you had been so focused on your lesson that you only now realised the shuffling and scraping of furniture from the direction of the bedrooms.
You turned the corner curiously to find Johnny directing Ghost and Kyle who were moving furniture around the storage room, they had emptied it out and now had furnished it neatly, bed tucked into the corner , a set of drawers with some shirts and other clothing.
Johnny noticed your curious gaze and spun around, a wide grin giving his features a joyous glow.
“Oh, hi hun! We emptied out the storage room, so you don’t have to sleep in the stables if you don’t want”.
Your own room… you were used to having your own space, all the hybrids used to have their own cells in the arena after all, as well as your room in your masters house … but this felt different.
You slowly entered the room; it was simple and clean. Its not like you had any possessions anyway; all you had brought with you was your robe and the collar.
“You can stay in here as much as you like, you can add to it, move stuff around, it’s all yours”

You had left the cabin shortly after , placing the wooden bison on the shelf by the door before you closed the door behind you.
Your room… you could keep things …
A memory of your younger years resurfaced harshly, you had found an acorn, you couldn’t remember how such a thing had entered the basement of your masters house, perhaps it had fallen through the small window? You remembered the feeling of numbness, of warm thick wetness running down your back… your master had been upset with your unwillingness to kill the opposing hybrid, a trembling elk boy, his antlers still soft with velvet.
You were knelt on the floor, still … when you spotted its shiny shall, you had tugged against the collar to grasp at it, your fingers gently brushing the smooth shell, the riugh cap. You remembered sniffing it, a faint reminder of home, of playing in the forest … of freedom.
For days you had come back to it , gripping it firmly , using its texture to soothe you.
Then he spotted it, your traitorous body had subconsciously shifted to grasp at it when he unknowingly disturbed the brick you hid it behind. You remembered how he didn’t yell, he just … laughed, before twisting his hand in your hair.
“Crush it, use the brick or … I’ll use your skull”
He had hissed it, grinning as he watched your hands tremble as they grasped the brick.
You looked around, you weren’t small anymore… you could keep things.
You spotted an acorn, small in your palm… and perfect.
You sat amongst the moss and trees rummaging through the plants, watching ants walking around , they seemed to be leaving a small cone shaped snail shell carefully cleaned.
You picked it up , carefully inspecting the unique stripe pattern… you had an idea of what you wanted in your room.
Johnny was ecstatic that you finally spoke , even if it was just a stuttered out “Ok”.
“John, Captain, they did it they spoke!”
He was quick to call out in an attempt to wake the sleeping dragon hybrid, his tail wagging with fervour.
Ghost on the other hands sat with you quietly, stunned.
“You did it, great job lov”.
His thumb ran over the back of your hand, soothing.
It wasn’t long before John and Kyle rushed in, Kyle was clearly still half-awake with no clue what the commotion was, his feathers ruffled and eyes bleary.
You had startled a little at Johns sudden intimidating presence, he was quick to relax his posture , crouching down with Ghost.
“You spoke then huh? Wish I could’ve seen an’ heard it, regardless good job”
He gently pat your knee, giving it a reassuring squeeze. Kyle was finally realising the situation, clarity filling his eyes.
“Oh , wow doll, that’s great! Don’t feel rushed to speak again ok, regardless of how much Johnny might whine”
The last word was followed by a playful shove from Johnny and the two of them chuckling.
You appreciated their concern and their care, although… it was a little…smothering at times.
Now for example , all four of them sat near or around you.
You gave Ghost a somewhat uncomfortable smile, more of a grimace really.
“Come on lads, let’s not crowd them too much , they’re still recovering from a panic”.
Price chuckles softly ,ssecretly amused by the sight of Ghost, the most mysterious and feared member of his team, softened by a bison hybrid he’d only met a few weeks ago.
“Come on then feathers” John thumped Kyle on the shoulder with a nod towards the kitchen. “Let’s go get breakfast started then”.
You were still huddled down with your head in Johnnys lap as he continued to play with your hair, threading his fingers through it, brow furrowing slightly in thought.
“You know wha’ helps me get myself feeling refreshed, a nice warm shower in the mornin’, that sound good?”
You looked up at the wolf hybrid, you weren’t quite sure what it entailed but from the way Johnny was smiling down at you, his ears perked up happily, then it must’ve been something nice.
You nodded softly , making a soft “uh huh”, it wasn’t much but from the way the wolf and ox hybrid perked up you would’ve thought you did something far less mundane.

They didn’t rush you to get up, to compose yourself, they just waited until you shifted yourself to stand. You followed the two of them to the bathroom, Johnny braced himself on the walls as he led the way, his tail wagging as Ghost quietly watched carefully , braced to step in if Johnny stumbled.
Something about the wordless gesture… so pure and unspoken, it was a nice reminder that you were in good hands.
Ghost rummaged through the cupboard fir supplies whilst Johhny explained how the shower worked, you flinched harshly at the sound of rushing water, the way it thudded and resonated within the bathtub.
Ghost placed a steadying hand on your lower back, moving surprisingly fast and quiet for a hybrid of his stature.
Johnny was quick to turn the shower off, his ears flattening to his skull.
“I’m sorry hun, hadn't thought how loud they can get. I’ll fill the tub a bit and you can just scrub yourself instead”.
You watched Johnny fill the tub a little, grabbing some of the supplies Ghost had retrieved and placing them along the baths edge.
“So, you just strip down an- oh wait no not now!”
Johnny was flapping his hands wildly whilst looking away.
You had acted on autopilot, it was a command you had heard before, after fights when you were covered in blood and grime you would strip and your keepers would throw buckets of water at you, the water was rarely warm , the cold biting into your flesh as the pooled an eerie pink hue on the floor.
You halted the motion, slowly tugging the robe you had always worn back up, glancing at Johnnys flushed face and giving Ghost a confused head tilt.
“Do it once we leave the room, we don’t typically strip in front of people here ”
You shrug but nod a little , Johnny explains how to cover yourself with a towel once you’re done and that they’d find you something to wear.
The air was sweet smelling … lavender? You didn’t know water could smell like that, johnny seemed pleased to see you sniff towards the tub.
“We’ll keep an ear out lov, just outside the door in case you need anything ok? Just … bellow I guess, got it?”
You nod, approaching the bathtub as the two closed the door behind themselves.
You could feel the heat emanating from the tub, causing the soft lavender smell to spread across the room.
You stripped down, bundling your robe in the corner, before tentatively stepping into the tub, it was warm, you stilled , letting yourself adjust , letting the heat seep into your bones, soothing.
You slowly and steadily settled into the water, the water wicking up the thick fur across your back… it was a new sensation, pleasant.
You turned to the bottles Johnny had laid out, the blue one was for the body, and the black one was for…. The fur? You think.
You scrub yourself clean, washing away any remainders from your past, awkwardly shifting the collar to wash the fur on the back of your neck.
The scars weren’t as angry, but the skin was rough from years of the wound opening again and again.
Your fur felt … softer the longer you scrubbed it, running your hand through your hair, scratching at your scalp with a satisfied hum.
Johnny was right... bathing did feel pretty nice. Refreshed was the word he had used… that must be the feeling, the laxness in your muscles, the way the heat soothed the aches and cradled you in the scent of lavender.
The water was tinted slightly, it must’ve been dried blood and general grime, like your sins washing away.
You huffed softly, stepping out the bath and wrapping the towel around yourself before softly bellowing towards the door. Ghost gently opened the door , johnny was hovering expectantly over his shoulder.
It had been around three weeks since you had been taken in by Prices pack.
You had woken once more curled up in the stable when you noticed that your collar was no longer as loose as it once was … was it somehow getting tighter? It had a magic seal keeping it shut after all, perhaps it constricted on some form of command from your master?
You were quick to stand, not wanting to disturb everyone too much you crept to Kyles room, it was well organised , it smelt fresh too.
You nudged Kyle awake, trying to speak like John had been teaching you.
You were able to able to make a rather harsh C sound, but the rest of the word evaded your lips, you huffed and pointed at your collar.
“hmm? What’s it doll, is it hurting ya?”
You grunted, shaking your head. You gesture at the collar again, gesturing wildly, pointing and miming shrinking as best you could by moving your hands closer together, before looking at Kyle.
He was squinting, his brown eyes bleary and barely awake… this wasn’t going to work.
You got up and went to find Ghost instead. He was in Johnny’s room, the room a picture of ‘organized chaos’ or whatever he had insisted. Ghost had fallen asleep with Johnny sprawled across his chest, Johnny’s face was blotchy and red, a slight salty smell lingering on Ghosts shirt, had he been crying?
You let out an instinctive sound of concern, unintentionally waking them both.
“hmm, whets wrong Hun? You need something?”
Johnnys voice was hoarse, from sleep or from crying you couldn’t tell, you tried to speak again, you were concerned after all, but once again your throat and lips refused to cooperate, so you instead raised your hand to caress Johnnys flushed cheek whilst huffing.
“Think they’ve noticed you get blotchy after crying, tryin to ask you if you’re ok Johnny”.
Ghost yawned and stretched, his face obscured by his mask even in sleep, although now it was askew slightly.
“oh yeah … I had a bit of a cry last night, just a bad headache, I’m ok… you look frazzled, is something else wrong?”
Oh yes, you had almost forgotten, you gesture to your collar and the shift in the room was instant, Ghost sat up, reaching for your collar gently, hesitating until you give him a nod.
He gently presses his finger to the skin just below the collar, feeling the way the gap between your skin and the collar was smaller now.
“Huh, is it uncomfortable lov? Seems it’s a little tighter than when we first met you”.
You whined softly, Johnny had also started looking at it, there was concern on his face, but also, something darker, something angry. you hadn't noticed how you’d frozen, the way your entire body had tensed and focussed on the wolf hybrid, the way your heart stuttered in your chest.
Ghost had felt your purse thrum against his fingers, looking at your face and how your eyes were locked on Johhny.
“Johhny quit staring at her like that, you’re alright, he’s just mad at whoever put it on you, no one should have to wear a collar”.
Johnny snapped out of it, shaking his head as if to clear the fog in bis mind, his ears flapping with the movement.
“Didn’t mean to scowl at you hun, your collar looks about the same size, don’t think its enchanted to shrink… I think you’ve just put on weight, since we keep you fed”.
You paused before looking at down at yourself, the harsh protrusions of muscle and bone you had grown used to were fading, cushioned by a layer of fat.
Gaining weight was uncommon in the arena, reserved for the natural growth from child to adult and occasionally if ones masters decided to bulk them up… but this was different, this was soft.
Johnny held out a mirror, you hadn't seen your reflection outside of the water in the trough and blood on the floor, you looked different, your now softened features more closely resembling the child you had once been, the one who had been stolen from their home… you’d been so small back then… innocent to the cruelty of humans.
What would they think of you… could they even fathom the blood on your hands, the pain you had survived and caused…
You could hear someone trying to get your attention, you slowed your breathing, you hadn't noticed it racing. Ghost was trying to talk to you, his words muffled still, Johnny was whining in concern, desperate to sooth but knowing better than to touch you.
You forced yourself to breathe in deeply, eyes squeezed shut, you remembered the way Ghost held your hand, the way Johnny had pet your horns, most importantly how safe they made you feel.
Ghosts voice became more audible to you.
“Hey there, you’re doing a great job calming yourself, do you want us to leave you be for a min?”
You shook your head vigorously, Johnny whined sympathetically, holding back from moving closer.
“That’s ok, you ok if we move a little closer?”
You swallow thickly as you nod.
Ghost ever so gently offered his hand to you, you eagerly took it, squeezing it tightly.
Johnny shuffled closer, eager to offer comfort, clearly unsure how to approach the situation, you lower your head in hopes he would get the hint.
He shuffled to lean against the wall on the floor, gently patting his lap in invitation.
Resting your head in his lap, sniffling softly, there was something so comforting about curling up so small of feeling protected, of being watched over by two hybrids.
“Did something we say upset you?”
You could hear the tremble in Johnnys voice as he gently pet your ears, ghosts hand secure and steady within your own as he silently observed.
You shook your head, mentally cursing yourself, you wanted to just tell them , it would be easier on them, after all they’d done you could at least give them that.
Ghost crouched down further until he was practically lying on the floor next to you, it was an amusing site, such a large man awkwardly laid out.
“I know that look, it’s not your fault, you’ve only been working on it a couple weeks, you will get there, besides you’re already making progress. Just … start small , ok?”
You forced your mouth open, working on making the O sound, just like John had shown you.
“o-o-o-Ok”

After the foraging incident, you sat down with them all in the living room.
“Right … we need some way for you to let us know if you’re out the house or something, any ideas?”
You sat there watching as the others bounced ideas back and forth, writing it down, moving an item, huffing in a certain way… nothing quite satisfactory, not for you.
Johnny whined in annoyance, Kyles feathers were ruffles, Johns hands rubbed at his brow as plumes of smoke escaped his nose.
Ghost on the other hand, seemed perfectly content, whittling away at something clutched in his large hands. You leaned over, attempting to make out the shape between his fingers.
Ghost huffed in amusement at your curious gaze, his tusks twitching upward in a half smile. He opened his hand to reveal a small wooden bison, the angles were rough, its shape simple but recognizable.
“how about whenever you head on out, you leave this on the shelf by the front door, does that work lov?”
You were busy examining the small figure, you noticed that even with its vague details, he had gently scratched a line across its face, mimicking your own scar, you smiled, the scar tissue twisted it slightly.
You nodded excitedly, before quickly shuffling over to Johnny, holding out the little wooden bison, the moment he acknowledged it his tail began to wag.
“Simon this is so cute!”
Simon...? You turned to face the boar hybrid, who had sat up a little at the name, you cocked your head.
“It’s a military thing sweetheart, we sometimes use codenames with each other instead, like Soap”.
John gestured towards Johnny, who proudly sat upright.
You looked over at Kyle who sighed.
“Mines Gaz, it’s just my last name shortened”.
You turned to look at John, who responded before you could cock your head.
“Price, my last-name or just Captain”
You hummed, acknowledging the call signs, but there was a thought you couldn’t shake.
Why did Ghost always go by his callsign, rather than his actual name like the others?
The question sat plain upon your face, your stubborn tongue refusing to let you speak still.
Simon-Ghost sighed softly, like he should have known this would happen.
“It’s not a happy story Lov, maybe some other day yeah?”
Part of you wanted to insist and push, the part of you, that fragile broken part of you knew better, you nodded with a soft huff, the closest you could get to talking for now.

The day went by quickly; John was still insistent on you resting as much as physically possible. Whilst your open wounds had scabbed over and some of the smaller wounds had healed, he was still concerned.
“You look a little too small for a bison, I assume you weren’t fed proper before, gotta build up some more meat on your bones alright”.
He’d gently nudge you over with his tail, flicking it on your lap to keep you still. Despite his gruff exterior, he was a worrier, dead set on taking care of his boys and now you too.
As a dragon hybrid, he ran warm, something you found hard to resist, the temptation to lean into his side and nuzzle him. For now, however you were content to fall asleep in his presence, as far as you’d come in your recovery, the intimacy of simple touch was still a lot for you, nuzzling was for apologies, and hand holding was for gho-Simon.
Your inability to read was something John worked on with you, you watched him point at the different letters in his book before he sounded them out, you tried to mimic his sounds as best as you could, the foundation that would help you speak …. Eventually.
It was a slow process, each hoarse attempt bearing a faint resemblance to those made by John, sometimes Johns frame would shake with barely restrained chuckles.
You’d scowl at him, which only made him shake harder,
“’m sorry sweetheart, not laughing at you, just sound cute, like a little calf, ‘specially those little huffs”.
Without thinking, you headbutted him, your own horns meeting his.
You froze.
You had meant it to be a friendly, playful gesture, but you knew it could also be interpreted as aggressive.
He gently pushed back, returning the gesture, a glint of mischief in his eyes.
“Headbutt like a calf too huh? Go on then”
Part of you wanted to push, to engage in the offered play flight, but then you remembered how Johnny had cried when you pinned him. You remembered those you had hurt, the fighting, clashing with each other, both desperate, both hungry … rarely both surviving.
You backed away, looking at your hands, your own lungs betraying you, refusing to take in air, blood? Why was there blood? You figured it must have come from John, you frantically searched for wounds, simultaneously wanting to fix it whilst also being terrified to touch him again.
“hey shh, we’re ok, it’s all good”.
His warm hands encircled your wrists, gently but firmly, your breathing calmed slowly, sharp breaths you forced down, trying to mimic Johns own.
You look at your shaking hands, they were clean? Not a spot of blood on them
Johns brow was furrowed with concern; he just sat with you for a while …
“This is why I wanna help you speak, you could tell us what’s wrong… we could fix it as best we can”.
You nodded, you wanted that too, to be able to communicate past your grunts, huffs and bellows.
“Guess we’ll take it one day at a time …”

Learning to relax and let the others close to you was easier some days more so than others.
Some nights you preferred to stay in the stables, others you’d settle down next to the sofa.
Speaking had continued to elude you, so you searched for alternative ways to express your gratitude.
It hadn't taken you long to notice some of the ways that Johnny struggled around the house , the way he would trip and stumble in his stubborn attempts to move around the cabin independently , the ways his tail would flick in irritation.
Ghost was his main support , catching him when he fell, although well intentioned it would sometimes irritate Johnny.
Sometimes , when he had scolded Ghost away , would walk alongside him , gently nudging johnny , offering a silent arm of support . When johnny would sit lamenting his inability to be independent , missing the man he used to be , you simply nuzzle him with a soft grunt .
In your hunt for connection, you found that Kyle seemed to enjoy cooking , one day you decided to go out and sniff out herbs for him to use, in addition then everyone could enjoy food together.
You went out early in the morning , before the others had woken up , gently pushing open the stable doors and walking towards the trees, sniffing around the shrubs and roots , digging around.
After a few hours of gathering you had found an assortment of herbs and to your delight you had found two Giant Puffball mushrooms , you hummed to yourself as you wandered back .
You remembered the first time you had found a puffball mushroom by yourself.
You had been playing in the forest , decorating your horns with crowns of leaves and flowers, running around with deer and elk hybrid children .
You had stumbled upon the mushroom whilst playing hide and seek , you had eagerly taken it back home , it was comically large in your then small frame .
Your father had guffawed as you half ran half stumbled through the doorway , your mother had used the mushroom to make dinner , you remembered standing on a stool next to her as she showed you how she prepared your favourite mushroom stew.

Once you got near the cabin once more you heard the piercing sound of Kyles panicked chirps , you picked up the pace , worried for your new friend, making a loud bellow of concern.
They were all outside when you arrived , but it was Kyle who approached , firmly admonishing you.
“fucking hell you cant just run off randomly at 3 in the morning, do you have any idea how worried we all were?”
You paused , you hadn't mean to worry them … but you couldn’t have communicated what you wanted to do anyway, you would’ve annoyed them …
You hadn't noticed how your own body had subconsciously slumped in defeat , caught in a situation with no ideal solution , you sniffled ever so softly , you had just wanted to do something nice..
John, being as level headed as he is , noticed your shift in demeanor , Kyle was too busy scolding you , allowing his worry to manifest as anger.
John gently placed a hand on Kyles shoulder , a clear sign to stop , a reminder to calm down and observe the situation , his previously puffed out wings settling as he noticed the dampness on your cheeks.
He stepped further forward , huffing a gentle stream of smoke , observing the items laden in your arms , upon noticing the food , he took an educated guess before speaking ..
“Sweetheart , is this all for us? I’m guessing you wanted to surprise us huh?”
You sniffled , desperately trying to hold back tears as you nodded .
“that’s awful sweet… come on , why don’t we see what Kyle can cook us up ”
He gently wraps a wing around your shoulder , giving Kyle a pointed look , kickstarting him into action.
You follow Kyle into the kitchen , gently depositing the food on the counter, Johnny looked at it all with awe , sniffing at the large puffballs.
“Are these mushrooms? They’re huge”
His ears perked up eagerly as he grinned at you , but you remained a little hunched down , as if you just wanted to disappear , Johhny noticed how you kept glancing at Kyle.
“Gaz, I think she feels sorry for scaring us all yeah?”
His tone was playful with an undercurrent of a sternness you hadn't seen in Johnny before.
Kyle sighed , his wings slumping in resignation before he turned to look at you.
“I didn’t mean to scream at you , you scared us is all … scared me … I like to take care of you, I guess I forget you’re not as fragile as when I met ya… you just wanted to do something nice”
He ever so slowly and gently raised his hand to your head , gently rubbing your head . you paused , taking a moment to process his gesture , his forgiveness, before gently nuzzling into his hand.
“I’m guessing that means we’re all good now doll?”
You huffed happily , he chuckled , both of you ignoring Johnnys mildly obnoxious cooing.
Kyle turned to the counter , assessing the herbs you’d found. You hovered by the sink , just watching him , before he handed you a bundle of herbs and turned on the tap with a gentle nod.
You started rinsing the herbs , handing them to Kyle once you were done, making a small factory line , washing and handing off to Kyle.
You used to love helping your parents in the kitchen , being able to help someone again made your heart twist with nostalgia.
It truly was starting to feel like home.

“Come on lov , let’s go home”
Home …
After everything , you were still wanted , well by Ghost at least .
You took his hand , standing up, you didn’t let go , he rubbed his thumb over the back of your hand ,before gently tugging you in the direction of the cabin.
Your legs followed obediently , but your traitorous thoughts raced and attempted to coax you to run again, to be alone again.
Would John still be mad , would he kick you out, smoke curling around his horns ? what if you never got to experience Kyles gentle coos again? What about Johnny , what if he was scared of you now, your thoughts went back to him whimpering and crying , oh god had you hurt him?
Ghosts slightly tightening grasp was a small comfort , he gently rubbed patterns , a soft distraction.
Before you knew it, you were at the cabin.
Ghost held the door open for you , you walked into the stable , the warm cozy corner where you spent your days , you looked at the door to the living room , Johhny was asleep on the sofa , drooling a little.
You gently sniffed , you couldn’t smell blood at least , you would have to check for bruises later.
His face was blotchy from crying … you had to fix it .
You tentatively step forwards, finally crossing past the straw coated floor into the hardwood floored room, slowly approaching Johnny.
You wish you could say something , apologise to him … explain yourself...
Instead, you ever so gently nuzzled your head into his lap , huffing softly .
You heard the shift as he woke , the slightly startled whine , before his breathing eased …
“oh hun, this your way of saying sorry … its awful cute”
The teasing lilt in his tone did little to hide the strain of emotion , the kind that caught in your throat , forced you to swallow it down .
His hand softly rubbed the soft skin around your horns , your knees shook a little before you let them meet the rug , allowing your chin to rest on Johnnys lap .
You looked up , he was humming softly at you, his tail gently thumping on the sofa.
The gentle rubbing turned into small patterns , swirls and curves , your parents had done it whenever your horns itched as they grew in , softly singing or telling you stories until you were lulled to sleep .
“It’s ok , you can cry … I don’t judge”
You felt his thumb rub your cheek , Ghost had put a blanket round your shoulders and sat nearby on the floor, quietly joining the peaceful scene.
A gruff chuckle pulls you from the moment, looking up you see John and Gaz. For s moment you move to stand back up , only for Johnny to whine and gently tug your horn, a clear sign to stay.
You give John an apologetic , guilty look, shrinking into yourself as much as possible.
John sighed , crouching , bringing himself down to your level , no longer intimidating , but rather like a man attempting to calm a frightened animal.
“We aren’t strangers to outbursts sweetheart, pretty sure each of them has taken a swing or a bite at each other”
A soft trail of smoke left his nose as he huffed out a reminiscing laugh,
“One time Ghost managed to break my nose”
Your eyes widened as you looked over at Ghost , who shook his head contritely , although there was a glimmer of mischief in his eyes.
“And after I swore and Gaz fixed my nose , I forgave him, because it wasn’t his fault .”
He hand gently patted your leg
“I gat protective of my hoard , but that doesn’t mean I don’t care about you. You’re one of us now, aren’t ya?”
You whined and huffed softly , gently leaning into the touch , relishing it, and just what it represented .

Before you knew it you found yourself surrounded by blankets and pillows that Kyle had fetched , forming a makeshift nest.
Kyle was huddled into Johns side, whose scaled wings were splayed over the nest, keeping everyone warm. Johnnys tail wagged as he continued to pet your horns and ears as you ever so softly nuzzled into his belly , rumbling softly.
Ghost held your hand gently , giving you a gentle look that you could just tell was a silent way to let you know , with a flicker of smugness in his eyes...
... that he told you so.

You sniffled , then you noticed it … a scent … someone was approaching .
You looked up …
Ghost was lumbering towards you , his footsteps heavy but calm , he was carrying something , you couldn’t bare to look at his face … at the anger , the disappointment , the disgust .
He sat down , next to you , fiddling with whatever he was carrying , your eyes stayed on the floor.
There was silence for a while,
The gentle shuffling of leaves barely audible past your own heartbeat.
He moved his hand , you flinch , braced for impact…
Nothing happened , no pain , you look
He is holding out a cup , its full of the stew Kyle always made for you...
He nudges it into your hands …
Why was he feeding you , you’d messed up…
You finally dared to look at his face , braced for his fury …
Only to be met with …. A smile?
Most of his face was covered behind his balaclava , but … his eyes
His eyes were smiling , creased softly in the corners , causing the scar on his temple to twist ever so slightly …
“Go on … don’t let it go cold lov”
You fumbled raising the warm cup to your lips
Your thoughts raced , this was new, why wasn’t he mad?
He huffed, it almost … was he laughing ?
“No , I’m not mad ”
You looked at him , he sat taller than your own hunched frame , but for once that wasn’t intimidating
“I don’t know … exactly what you’ve been through , but I know it wasn’t easy for you, I know you were hurt”
His hand gently tugged his mask down , he had a deep scar across his chin , lip and cheek , it looked a lot like your own, along with countless other scars, their smooth surface catching the moonlight … stars glimmering across his face…
“I might not know your demons… but we all have them , we were military after all. It never really leaves you … they sit in the shadows , they wait , they find you in your sleep , in your own thoughts ”
You had suspicions of their previous occupation, military made sense.
The way John coordinated them all , the medical knowledge of Kyle, and Johnny... the scar on his forehead was far from subtle , the way he still stumbles around.
“yeah, Johnny got hurt real bad, scared the shit out of us … I slept by his side for weeks. He’s still recoverin , and that makes us all … a little protective of him.”
His hand rested on your shoulder , gripping gently
“We’re not angry at you lov, we just…. We wanna keep johnny safe. And when we heard him yelp … it was like being back on the field .”
You could feel your heart twisting with guilt , your hands curling tighter on the cup of stew.
His grip shifted ever so slightly , his thumb gently rubbing your jaw.
“But for you … where did you go huh? Can’t have been good”
You looked at him , your mouth opening , desperately trying to tell him , you wanted to tell him .
But you just … couldn’t
“It’s alright …. We’re a patient bunch , there’s no rush, hell you don’t ever need to tell us... we will still be here either way ”
