The violence in this one was very numbing. I read "My Darling Dreadful Thing" and "Blood on Her Tongue" and they were so right in their Horror/gothic universe but this child was so dark. Dark horror, dark gothic, dark historical, for real.

Such a hauntingly moving read.

Women were dying left and right. Corpses were hitching ride on other's backs, parents killing their kids, wives eating their husbands, soldiers making human meat soup... choking, oh don't even get me started on that flogging between the nun and non-believer 🤣🤣🤣... Overall, men are nasty. That farm scene was just so revolting, death to Otto. Thinking about how the book is formed in its entirety, I do understand the fate that the MCs got. But it wasn't easy to digest. The necromancer playing priest for Otto's confessions served that nasty piece of me with endorphins. 🙈🙈 I mean, that vile man. I am glad he didn't make it back to Freida.

The curiosity had me a chokehold. And finally knowing who it was, well, I could see it but it was also not easy to guess. Good work. When it comes to Queer, Bilal and Anwar were an intriguing storyline. That Fola-Evie ship was sketchy but since they're just babies, I didn't feel any urge to think further of that. And Tavi, you child, I hope therapy helps you and you get your Spanish Prince.

Every time I see a new book from Faridah, I think about "Ace of Spades". That book was truly a phenomenal.

Bisexual black teen with very beautiful and supportive parents (wow). She also has good friends, best friend- oops, does she though? Ex-boyfriend, he was something shady. And then a girlfriend, but is she a girl-friend or girl-foe. And another Black teen Queen (crown) but also there were rednecks and Karen-teachers everywhere, Jesus. But we made it, HEA, yes.

I love stories like this one. The intensity of trying to find out who the bad guy is, was rather thrilling. And here, there were many options because everyone seemed shady. The back and forth between Amayah and Ida was got a little bit saddening but don't even start on me with Simone. Girl was crazy. I loved Ida's parents, they had very many good moments and them rooting for Amayah, just sweet. The plot, the pace, the emotions, I loved all that. The ending though, I am not judging but someone did die. That was someone's daughter.

Anarcha Westcott was a young Black girl enslaved in Alabama. After a traumatic childbirth, she developed vaginal and rectal fistulas, a condition that left her in constant pain and shame.

Instead of receiving care, she was experimented on over 30 times by Dr. J. Marion Sims, who operated on her without anesthesia. He used her body to develop a surgery that would later be used to treat white women, with pain relief, dignity, and consent.

Anarcha didn’t agree to any of it. She wasn’t a patient. She was a victim of medical violence.
