Y’know how some schools do a teachers vs students kickball game during the last week of class before finals? Yeah i think Ryland Grace goes fucking crazy during that. The UNESCO rumors get overshadowed by the time weather moved their game into the gymnasium, where Mr Grace punted the ball with so much fucking force that it took out one of the ceiling lights

One of the many downsides of the Hail Mary being a suicide mission is that Armando is likely only equipped to keep astronauts alive for as long as they're useful to the mission.

Obviously this is going to be reflected in the amount of painkillers and general medicines he's been supplied with— enough for three astronauts to last several months to a few years max— but also… there's really no point in keeping any of those astronauts alive after they stop being useful to the mission.

Grace finds this out when he gets to a certain point in his starvation on the journey to Erid and, instead of offering medical advice, Armando announces that Doctor Grace is far too sick to continue being of use and so it’s recommended that his fellow crew members euthanise him to save on resources.

That is. Not a good day for shipboard morale.

I love the idea of Simon refusing to think he’s a monster.

Simon has held so tightly to his humanity at every turn, even when every single person reduced him down to “the convict” or “the butcher”. But he played the role he was told to play and managed to get out.

When he meets Grace, he doesn’t hesitate. “My name is Simon.” Full stop. In fact, he doesn’t even bring up the fact he was called everything else because if Grace cared, he would already know. Right?

Grace asks him if he has a last name and that’s the only time he hesitates. Does he give one of his other names as a last name?

Then Grace is like “well I seem to be pretty good at giving names (gesture to the eridians), would you like one?”

And Simon is so touched. Grace cares about him so much that he will give him a last name.

And then Simon says no. He will find his own last name. But he appreciates the offer.

Grace nods and they lean together on the coarse sand. Grace says names are important and he’s confident Simon will pick the best one.

Ive always adored the idea of Simon choosing his own last name.

But I'm also a sucker for a tiny identity crisis after the SM-13 and the eel because if its mutated Simon then its like....he fought so hard and now he's changed so much... how much of him is still the Simon he knew he was? He knows he is Simon and everyone else has given him titles he never wanted but he still looked like Simon, and now he's different.

But also GOOOSSSSHHHH him just being confident in who he is is just scrumptious. He is Simon, thats the name his mother gave him; he's not Eden's Butcher nor the COI's Convict. He is his mother's son, and Simon is the only name that he will ever claim no matter what happens.

I think it especially helps because I can see Grace, who used to teach kids when they were first finding themselves. So he’s used to people being like “hey this is who I am, is that cool?”

So Simon keeps coming to him like “okay, this is who I am” and Grace smiles and goes “yeah :) got it.”

Really helps Simon feel like he doesn’t have to fight for who he is anymore.
