Practice not Pressure
I've been doing a lot of running lately and it is easy to get caught up in beating your own personal records, pressuring yourself to gothat little bit faster, that little bit further. But, sometimes it just dosen't happen, no matter how much you push yourself. This is why my new mantra is "Practice not Pressure" I not racing against myself or anyone else, I am simply trying to become better, and all that takes is practice.
Because last weekend’s 10K run went so well I decided to attempt a 20K trail run over this past weekend. Let’s just say the 20K was definitely harder. I felt that I had energy at the end, but my body (aka. knees and hips) were definitely feeling it. Super beautiful day. I went along the beach which was a lot more technical than the well-established trails where there were some slow sections, but maybe that was a good thing. So here’s to my first ever 20K!
Ran my first 10k in years
Holy moly, I crushed a 10k today. And when I say crushed, I mean I ground that baby down until there was nothing left but fine powder as dust in my tracks. Okay okay, I won't be winning any races, but I haven't completed a 10k in probably 4 years, and I ended super strong. I was taking a new route, you can tell as pace dwindled whenever I had to look at the trail map!
Had a fantastic breakfast with a guest star, chocolate ganache! Also, made a ton of chickpea curry, so lots of leftovers for the week.
A good day
Work up early today, thought I’d roll with it and went for a run. Beautiful morning sunny and not too warm.
Dins’ tonight. Roasted vegetables with spicey chickpeas. I mellowed out the chimchurri with some Greek yogurt to make a sauce.
Dinner tonight: Turmeric and paprika chickpeas on chimchurri laden salad. There is a garden burger hiding in there as well. Feta for a little salty. Overall, VERY flavorful, my breath can attest!

With a limp in my step
About two weeks ago now I went for my longest run in years (8km), and man did if feel good. I was super proud of myself, and was even thinking about how soon I’d be up to 10K, then who knows maybe a ½ marathon. The next day walking back from work my foot started to really hurt and I ended up limping the last 100m home, taking breaks along the way. It turns out I have a stress fracture, and need to take it easy for 6-8 weeks. I’ve started driving to work and stopped running, and man it sucks. It’s crazy how fast the positive internal dialoged I have been slowly developing over months reverted back to the mean self-deprecating version that started when a little girl, who’s feet barely touched the floor while sitting on a chair, looked down and thought she was fat because of her skin rolls.
I have been trying the stationary bike, as I don’t own a real one, and it has made me realize how much I actually like running. Wow “I like running” never thought I would say that, but it’s true and I miss it. I have been thinking about getting back in the pool as well, but it is a much larger time commitment, so we will see. Maybe taking the next few weeks to focus more on strength training and consistently making health meals will be the way to go. Searching the internet for a little inspiration to help me re-focus on my goals I came across the below movie today and would highly recommend watching if you have time. Mel talks about how motivation is plentiful regarding things that are safe and easy (watching tv, staying in bed), and how it seems to disappear when we want it around for the uncomfortable challenging things (going to the gym, finding a job), and a way to help act on things you want to do, but just don’t.
Is anyone else struggling with exercise injuries? What have you been doing to help get through it?

With all the running I've been doing I've noticed my sleeps have been getting better.
To all the people who have made progress towards your goals, what is the biggest day-to-day change you have noticed?
When to weigh - July comparison
I saw @diagetsfit182 post asking the tumblr community about thoughts on when to weigh, and couldn’t figure out how to reply with a picture so I am posting here. I tracked nearly every day in July (top graph) making sure to weigh in at the same time in the morning. I liked doing every day because it made the increases not as scary, and the new lows feel like truly new records. Had I only been tracking once a week (seen in the lower graph) I think the increase on the 16th would have got to me a bit more, but the same thing happened earlier in the week on the 12th so no big deal. I think the more data points the better; however, I found it hard to remember to do it every day, which is why I haven’t kept it up in August and September (I’ve been weighing every two to four days). Maybe if you have a dedicated spot for your scale it would be easier. And ooops forgot my labels, the vertical is "Weight in lbs", and the horizontal is “Day in July”
Here’s to all of the fitblrs/runblrs who only have a handful of followers. Who don’t always get notes on their life updates and PRs. Who continue to press on and crush their goals! You are seen. You are supported. ✌🏼🌻 Keep going!!
A darkening of days, but not of spirits
With shorter days I have been running on the track and well-lit pavement. Come the weekend, I am back to the park running with the trees. Things I love about running here: the sound of my shoes hitting gravel, or the almost silent whisper as they land on a bed of fallen needles, the moment when I stop to catch my breath and look up to see nothing but tall sentinels bearing a thick green canopy with nothing but small spots of blue sky peeking through, and the air, oh the fragrant air, promising the beginning of fall.

Speedbump or Square One?
Around the end of June husband left to go work up North for the summer, which just happened to be around the time I started to make healthy life changes. After about two months alone I was exercising and eating well a lot more consistently, and feeling more energetic. Now husband is home, and things basically feel like they have gone back to square one on the health front. Not because of lack of support, but because of little things, like figuring how much more food to make, the fact that snuggling in the morning is much more appealing than going for a run, and, in general things just take a little longer. I am super happy to have him back, and looking forward to foraging ahead with him on path to a healthy life. Hopefully, reworking some things is just a speed bump :)
