Today marks my one year cruelty free anniversary! :)
Today marks are very special day for me. One year ago today I made a pledge and promise to my body to become cruelty free and stop eating meat. Since I was 22 years old I have been hospitalized from my Crohn's every single year, at least once a year, from complications or bleeding. Since my health journey I have been on the road to remission and my symptoms have improved dramatically. I wish I would have started it sooner! This means so much to me. I've come so far and pledge another year and for the rest of my life to be healthy, cruelty free, and know in my heart and body that I'm making a difference.
Can I pass Crohn's on to my Kids?
Hi my fellow Crohnies! ;) I’m sorry I’ve been away for awhile.. I have lots to catch up on! But first, I want to address this subject that has recently been brought to my attention. I know it can be a scary thought to pass something so gut wrenching (pun intended) on to the ones we love most, but the good news is, according to latest studies if only one parent has Crohn’s, your child only has a 7-9% chance of developing it- 7-9%!!! That’s so low it’s crazy to even worry or give a second look. Now if both parents have Crohns, the chances are much higher at around 40%, but even then that’s less than half the probability. Matter of fact, more than 85% of Crohnies don’t even have an immediate relative with the disease. I’ve attached an article below that explains in a little more detail, but I wanted to set a little ease to your minds on this beautiful Sunday morning and say not to worry about your little ones, “You can look forward to your new bundle of joy arriving without any unnecessary worries.” Crohn’s Disease Pregnancy: Can I pass Crohn’s Disease On To My Children? by Andrew Francis on | No Comments If you are thinking about getting pregnant and you, your partner, or both of you have Crohn’s Disease; a real concern for many new parents is will their children will also end up with it. The good news is that the chances of your child having Crohn’s are relativity low if one of the parents has the illness. About 7% of children will have Crohn’s when one of the parents has it. When both of parents have Crohn’s Disease it seems that there is around a 40% chance that your child will have the illness. That is not even 50/50 when both parents are involved. While knowing and discussing this information with your partner is a good idea, if there is only one parent with Crohn’s Disease the risks of your child ending up with the same issues are very low. If you both have Crohn’s then this may be something you would want to discuss in more detail as the risks are a bit higher. Bringing your doctor in to the conversation may be of benefit to help you make the best decision for you. Getting prepared before you want to get pregnant and discussing these issues can take away any surprises that may have come up along the way throughout the pregnancy. This way it ensures your baby has the best possible start in life because you are well informed. Having a baby is a joyous occasion, and with a little preparation on your part you will avoid any surprises. You can look forward to your new bundle of joy arriving without any unnecessary worries.
I can't stress enough how much I love juicing and how much it has helped my Crohn's! It makes life easier whenever you are able to actually digest the nutrients (and quickly at that!) and even on your worst days makes you feel ten times better because of it! I have more energy and more willing to take on the world. If you haven't tried it, I suggest doing it everyday for two weeks and just see how you feel! I hope all of my fellow Crohnie's are doing well! Xo
I found this article very interesting as coffee has always bothered me and I love my herbal teas! I thought I would share- have any of these drinks ever bothered/helped you?
Remicade/Apriso
This says "Pour your heart out".. I've been on so many different meds for the Crohn's disease and have done 11 days of IV food in the hospital and almost lost my colon cause the Crohn's infects my whole large intestine all the way out the end. I've done Asacol first, Lialda, Imuran, Humira, Cimzia and currently on Remicade + Apriso, have been for 2 1/2 yrs. And my hair won't stop falling out. I've tried everything under the sun.. Rogaine, Spectral RS, Nioxin (shampoo), Nioxin Diamax.. have even tried using brown sugar with olive oil and I juice hair tonic mixtures. As of now I'm just doing the juicing, Nioxin (shampoo), Nioxin Diamax and the Spectral RS. Soon I will be starting the Rogaine again because it just isn't stopping and no one seems to believe me (except my husband who sees me everyday). I wash my hair every other day and try to not wear it up to much cause then it falls out worse. Unfortunately looked it up and of course hair loss is a side effect of both meds. I already have a lot of the side effects of the Remicade and it just gets so tiring of dealing with it. I seriously feel like I'm going to end up with wig in a few more months.. which of course isn't THAT big a deal, just frustrating to be 30 and losing it. I've read what other people have done and a lot of them say they get off the medication.. only that isn't an option for me. The last time I went off one of the meds (Humira) I was in the hospital after 2-3 months and almost lost my colon/large intestine as then labeled me with severly active Crohn's disease. Funny thing is the more I type this out the more I feel like a big baby. :p
Oh No! I'm so sorry to hear you're going through this. Trust me, you aren't a big baby. That is more than most people in the world can handle. The truth is, you wouldn't be going through it if you weren't strong enough to handle it :) Sometimes in life we go through really tough times, but it's important to look back and remember that you are still here and you are still fighting! If you can go through this much and still be standing you are one strong mofo ;) And that, if anything, is enough to smile! As far as the hair, I have noticed that Humira does make me shed a lot more than usual. Hopefully over the next few years they will perfect the meds more so we don't have to go through so many side effects. I'm so happy to hear that you are juicing though! It has helped me so much and I hope it at least provides a little bit of energy for you. Please keep me updated on how you are doing. I hope my videos provide a little bit of comfort. Please let me know if you ever have any questions or ever need to talk!
I have so much to ask/talk about. I recieved your blog through one of your cousins wives and I found that you have been through almost exactly what I've been through. I have been hoping to talk to someone about all that is going on cause I don't know anyone else with Crohn's and feel like no one understands and doctors definitely won't do anything or find out what the heck is going on and it's just terribly frustrating. :p
I'm sorry to hear you're going through this :( What kind of questions did you have? I'm here if you need someone to talk to! :)
Fighters Stick Together
Every once in a while you come across someone who isn’t just trying to get you in and out the door and treat you like you’re just another dollar. I’ve felt like this every time I’m in a nail salon for example, until today. This lady genuinely cared about the health of my nails, took her time, asked questions, and made me feel like she cared so much she could have been a motherly figure. It’s very rare people like this that I’ve come across that motivate me to be a better person and help others in need. Daily I receive messages from my fellow Crohnie’s who are reaching for help and I’ve literally cried over some of them just knowing there are more of you out there that have had to endure the pain and suffering I’ve had to go through with this disease or even worse… And it kills me inside. It absolutely devastates me. I’m thankful for the opportunity just to share my story and help everyone I can. I know I can’t take your pain away, I wish I could :( but I will always be there to have someone to talk to or provide helpful tips if you need it. And you see, you guys help me as well, so much more than you know. You push me to keep fighting, to stay persistent not only in my health but in everyday life. I’ve never been so motivated to want to take my career to the next level and be a more strong, independent woman. I’m thankful for your kind hearts and thoughtful words. You are my backbone. And I am thankful for each and every one of you, my fellow Crohnie’s ;)
Hey I sent you a message on facebook about Humira but I dont know if you got it because it wasnt sent to your main message folder my name is matt. Love your blog !
Hi Matt! I didn't even know we had separate message folders on FB ?! I'm sorry I didn't receive it, unless I'm looking in the wrong place, lol. What were some of the questions you had about Humira? I can always answer them on here if not try and make a video to answer them for you:) I'm here if you ever want to talk!
<3
Thank you for the videos you post. It’s been a comfort :) I will be starting Humira soon and seeing you be so strong with your first injection on your own is giving me courage.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching them! It brings me comfort to know they are bringing you courage :) Stay strong and I'm always here if you want to talk!
