james nodded, “dad too, okay,” he said. he felt a bit nervous, but he knew he could charm them. well, he’d definitely try. james fell in step with the other girl. he grinned at her, “yes, infamous because she never laughs at my jokes,” he said.

“hey, i totally laugh at your jokes.” she defended herself before giving him a smile. slowing as they finally reached the potrait to the common room, she said the password before stepping back as it opened. “it was only the lily evans before we were friends that didn’t laugh.” she said as she stepped into the entrance of the common room.

james felt the knot in his stomach release when lily wrapped her arms around him. she tucked perfectly in his chest. it was really as if they fit together. he stroked her back for a moment before detangling from their embrace. he grinned at her, “is she in the common room?” he asked. “i think my parents want to meet the infamous lily evans as well,” he said, grinning.

lily almost didn’t want to let go. the feeling of his body and his smell was just enough to make her want to cling on. feeling a smile spread across her face, lily nodded. “she is. and dad too i think.” she said as she slowly started walking the short distance back to the common room. “the infamous lily evans?”

   Emmeline entered inside of the Great Hall with a rather large package in their hands. As they approached the table they last saw Lily at, their eyes searching for the redhead - eyeing her and her parents not far away.

     “ What if instead of desert you open this?” They teased lightly, placing the package in front of her best friend as they took a seat be. “ Happy Christmas, Lilypad! It’s not much, but I hope you like the presents.”

lily loved the feast. she loved every feast at hogwarts, actually. there was just something about the food that seemed better to her. and the fact that she got to share everything with her parents only made this one that much better.

as the red head reached for a slice of cheesecake, she saw the package and heard a tiny voice before realizing who it was. “oh em!” she said with a laugh as she reached for the gift. “you didn’t have to, you know that.” not that she wasn’t thankful, and she knew her friend would just ignore her anyway.

james bit down on his bottom lip when lily’s hand reached out, but then quickly went back down where it originally lay. he smiled at her words, “it’s okay,” he said softly. his heart absolutely ached at her next words. the raw emotion in his voice sent his mind spiraling. “i miss you too,” he said before stepping foreword to envelope her into a hug.

it was like a giant weight was lifted off of her shoulders that she didn’t even know was there. lily wrapped her arms around james as he pulled her into a hug, a smile crossing her face. even if it took them a while to get back to where they were, she was glad that they taking a step in the right direction. slowly stepping back, lily looked up at james. “i know all holiday plans got ruined with us being stuck here,” lily started to say. “but my mum mentioned she still wants to meet you.”

james looked down, knowing what lily wanted to apologize for without her even having to say it. he glanced at her, his stomach curling with longing as he gazed into her eyes. he thought the silent treatment between them would make his feelings go away, but he was so, so wrong. he shrugged, “you don’t have to apologize” he said. “i shouldn’t have came so strong and took the hint you didn’t feel the same. i didn’t mean to push you.”

“no james. i do.” lily said reaching out to touch him before changing her mind halfway and dropping her hand back to her side. “you were just being the fun-loving, adorable james that i’ve come to know, and i turned into the third-year lily over something stupid.” she knew she might have ruined any chance with james, but she refused to lose his friendship too. “can we be friends again? i-i miss you,” her voice cracking at the end.

it was like christmas had come full fledged at hogwarts. it seemed everywhere you turned you saw something related to the holidays. and it almost seemed to put everyone in a better mood, even if they were all trapped at hogwarts this year. she couldn’t wait for the day to finally be here, and to share the school with her parents.

but before any of that could happen, lily knew she needed to complete one tradition first. at school or at home, lily had to make sure that remus received his gift before the offical day. it was almost their thing. 

heading down the stairs from the girls dormitory gift in hand, the red head spotted her friend sitting in the common room. walking towards him, she grinned and held out the small gift in her hand. “happy christmas, remus.”

Pandora had her own doubts about the entirety of the situation, but there was still faith held in Dumbledore that most held despite their circumstance. ❝I am sure you’re right. I just can’t shake the ominous feeling of entropy…❞ She sighed and looked off down the hall towards the common room. She knew she couldn’t hide from them forever, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t try. ❝At least it will all be over soon.❞

lily smiled softly at the girl. “well, speaking for myself,” she started. “i know most of the prefects are on high alert, as i imagine the professors will be.” she finished before giving a small shrug. “i do think i’ll be a little sad when everything is over however.”

james shoved his hands in his pockets as Lily made her way close to him. he chuckled and shrugged, “a little, yeah,” he replied. he was confused because she had called out to him as if she wanted to speak to him about something important and not about his parents.

he blinked at her next words. “apologize? for what?” he asked, eyebrows furrowed.

reaching up, lily started to fidget with the ends of her hair that had fallen out over the course of the day. whenever she had gotten into fights with any of the other girls, it was always so easy to apologize. but with james...it was different somehow. all she knew was she wanted her friend back.

“i should have done it weeks ago,” the red head said softly looking down, not answering his question. he would probably figure it out anyway. “we’re supposed to be friends and i ruined that by being a stubborn, temperamental, crappy person.” she could feel the tears building; she just knew she refused to let them fall. “i’m sorry, james,” she said finally looking up. “i shouldn’t have yelled at you, especially about that.”

try as she may, mary can’t help but look decidedly out of place among the families that have taken residence in the castle — reminding her very plainly that she herself has none. the look on her face is quite the contrast from the smirk that is usually present, and her arms are folded in a sort of DEFENSIVE stance as she makes her way out of the great hall. ( she’s not the greatest at hiding her emotions. )

lost in her thoughts, she hardly notices the person before her until she has bumped directly into them. eyebrows knit together. ‘oo – s’cuse me, mate.’

lily weaved in and out of student’s and their families for the better part of the evening. attempting to do any head girl duties seemed utterly useless at this point. determined to get one last sweet in before heading back up to find her own family, the red head turned towards the great hall knowing there would still be food following.

walking into the hall, lily laughed when she was bumped into and noticed it was mary. “mary, is everything alright?” she asked noticing the unusual stance and air that seemed to around her friend.

james had finished up showing his parents his favorite broom when he told them that he’d put it back in the broom shed. they had been in the common room all day so he didn’t feel bad for leaving them. he stopped and talked to different people, smiling politely when they introduced him to their parents. he finally got away and made a mad dash back to the tower. the tall boy really wanted to spend time with his mother and father, especially since he was an only child they were all quite close.

he tried to ignore the empty feeling when he thought about this break. he and lily had made plans to hang out, but now he felt strange. it was hard to believe their relationship was this strained, but he had to deal with it. he had to dodge all of his mothers questions about where lily was–the girl that was in his letters and they heard his friends teasing him about when they visited. he froze when he heard her voice call his name. james turned around, “hey, lily,” he said. “er, what’s up?”

her heart hammering away in her chest and slightly out of breath, lily finally closed the space that was between the pair when he started to talk. she didn’t realize he had been quite so far. she moved slightly over to the side, noticing all the passing students with their families. “are you excited your parents are here?” she asked awkwardly.

but even as james answered, lily knew she was only attempting to by herself some time. she had hardly seen him alone since their one charms class, and she had let this go on long enough. looking up at the boy, she felt like her heart was going to beat out of her chest. “well, actually,” she started. “the reason i stopped you is because, well, i need to apologize.”

christmas at hogwarts wasn’t a new thing for lily. she had spent one or two holidays behind at the castle when her parents went away. but having her own parents here, in the castle. that was something to celebrate; even if petunia decided not to come. the red head was over-joyed to share everything that was her life for the last six years with her parents, but there was one thing stopping her from fully enjoying it.

and that one thing wasn’t a thing; it was a person. james. she knew she had to apologize for their fight. it was uncalled for and very obviously but a strain on their friendship. as the red head made her way back to the common room to find her parents and friends, lily spotted the familiar head of black hair ahead of her. “james!” she shouted before quickening her footsteps to catch him, her heat hammering away in her chest.

  they smiled as soon as they heard lily’s answer, pretty awkward that from all people they asked her - they haven’t spilled the beans about their parents yet. it was just emmeline being secretive when it came to important stuff linked with her. 

 “ they changed a lot, i’m sure.” they joked lightly, nodding at her question. “ yeah, yeah. everywhere.  they’re probably coming just on the Christmas day. or…not. which it’s fine.  being an Auror is rather important now. i haven’t seen your parents! are they here already?”

lily knew her best friend liked to joke. she knew her friend’s parents wouldn’t have changed that much since september; auror’s or not. “em...” lily said reaching for her friend’s hand. “i’m sure they’ll be here. and yeah, i’ve just left them in the common room. they started talking with a third year muggleborn’s parents, and i had some head stuff to do.”

Pandora sighed at the sight of the Gryffindor. At least she wasn’t one of the parents, especially hers. ❝Yeah, I can’t help but feel that this arrangement is a horrible idea…❞ Then again, she was a bit biased based upon her family expectations and other variables. Pandora grabbed her wand from her pocket and began to fiddle with it out of anxiety. ❝I know it is dangerous out there, but the more people who come here, the higher the probability that something is going to go wrong.❞

“i will admit, I have my nerves.” lily said thinking about her parents who were sitting in the gryffindor common room. there was a war going on and lots of people with mixed statements running around the castle. “i have faith that dumbledore thought this through before he put this plan in action, however. maybe nothing will happen.”
