     O v e r a l l, i t  w a s an abnormal day. Touya went through the motions feeling as though he were dreaming , his vision hazy and distorted, his ears clogged. People who spoke to him didn’t seem real. Then, a woman at the shop made a comment and a switch was flipped, making it all feel too real. She already felt familiar, carrying on a conversation with him that went far beyond what was typical for a guest seeking a flower arrangement. Touya kept trying to put his finger on it but couldn’t.

     "Is your name – oh, this is gonna sound so weird…“ she was laughing nervously. Touya swore he saw a tear in the corner of her eye. She shook her head. "No, nevermind. You look a lot like someone I used to be friends with. But he died awhile ago.”

     Touya felt his chest tighten. His jaw clenched up, his skin glazed in a sudden flash of heat. “What was his name?” he asked, unsure if he actually wanted the answer, but regardless it was coming. The woman chuckled, wiping underneath her eye with her knuckle. “Yumichika was his name. I swear you look just like him. Well, anyway, thank you very much!” She paid, then left without another word. Touya stood, hollow, staring at the counter. Yumichika.

     Who was that? Why did he feel like he knew him?

               Why did he feel like he knew her?

     He didn’t tell Abel that story when he saw him at the bar that night, but it continued to weigh on his mind. His muscles were like stone. He hadn’t spoken much to Abel at all aside from the standard pleasantries, which he lied his way through. ‘Doing fine, just a bit tired.’ he insisted, but he was well past tired.

     Touya had little memory of the events that led up to finding himself with Abel on the bathroom floor. He remembered a boiling sensation in his stomach – a brewing that built and built before a final eruption. He remembered fighting his way past a crowd of people to get to the bathroom, and then he collapsed. Maybe he had too much to drink… he tried to recall how many shots he had – how many he planned to use to kill the memory of that girl, though clearly his plan had failed. He could hear Abel humming before even opening his eyes, a soothing sound that echoed off the walls, threatening to lull him back to sleep before he even gained full consciousness.

     It didn’t fit the dinginess of the bathroom he first opened his eyes to. He looked around without a word at first, trying to get an idea of what happened. Last time he blacked out like this, he freaked out and punched Tetsuo in the face. He could only hope Abel was luckier than that. Touya shut his eyes, exhaling a soft sigh through his nose.

     "This probably wasn’t how you wanted to spend your night out, I’m sorry.“

     T o u y a  l e a n e d  o v e r Abel's shoulder to get a close look at the drink sitting on the bar. Squinting his visible eye, he couldn't make out anything suspicious, nor did he notice any unsavory-looking characters upon glancing over his shoulder, but he knew he wasn't the best judge anyway. The people around them, being strangers, were capable of anything. "Don't drink anymore," he decided, fingertips prodding the glass away. Without hesitation, Touya stood, flagging the bartender down so he could pay. While he waited he continued to keep watch over the area, then he began helping Abel off the bar stool.

     "Well, I can't say anything happened, 

          but I think it's better to get out of here just in case.”

     “You can stay with me, I'm sure Tetsuo-san is out for the night."

     H o w  c o u l d  o n e comment set fire to his heart, yet freeze it over at the same time? For a few seconds, Touya stared at Naoki with his head tilted, his jaw slightly unhinged, causing his mouth to hang open as if he would speak but words could not be found. Touya never had it in his mind to abandon Naoki, but the other seemed to feel that way. What had others done to him in his past? Reactions like that almost made Touya thankful for his inability to remember his own past apart from what his room mate told him. Finally, a soft smile tugged at the corners of Touya's lips, and he shook his head.

     "I'll try not to."

          "For at least right now, you can rest assured I have no plans to go anywhere."

     "Oh, it’s you!" Touya took a few steps toward him.

It wasn’t his birthday -- in fact, he couldn’t recall anything he might be celebrating. Why then?

     N a o k i, f r o m  t h e very start, struck Touya as an endearing person -- maybe someone who handed their affection out too easily, but he couldn't be sure. He thought it would have been self-centered to assume he was an exception, or that it was only him. He didn't think about it much, and when he did, he always focused on his own regret that such affections couldn't be returned with the same ease. He simply smiled.

     U n i f o r m,  s t r i c t  b e h a v i o r, inclination to jump into the midst of a situation ordinary citizens -- or in Touya's case, tourists -- would find absolutely horrifying. Touya's guess was that he was a cop or something of the like. It was his first time in the city, and more importantly, his first encounter with anything as powerful as what he'd just witness. From a few blocks away, Touya noticed the flash of a blinding light, followed by explosion sounds. He wasn't sure exactly what propelled him to follow it rather than run away, but he soon found himself in the midst of chaos that could normally only be found in comic books or movies. When everything simmered down, authorities had one reasonable question for an ordinary human who jumped into the thick of it.

     Play it off. Play dumb.

          Why did authorities freak him out so much?

     He pushed a nervous laugh past his lips, scratching the back of his neck. It wasn't the time for laughing. He was still trying not to think of the fact that he nearly got himself killed over his own curiosity, though he was lucky to have made it out relatively unscathed. A death wish... Not a coward like him, he thought. "I thought they were fireworks, so I came to see," he lied. It seemed a little less silly than his actual reason. "I'm new to the area, so..."
