lately i've been challenging myself with rendering full scenes because i've never really been one to finish art like this. im pretty pleased with the contrast in the scene! when i finished my first pass of rendering and changed it to grayscale, the canvas looked like this:

fairly clear, but definitely some room to exaggerate values. squinting i can't really make out the form. so I went in with good old #FFFFFF and #000000 to bring the subject to the foreground:

and after going through with some additional tweaks (dodge and burn layers plus shimmying the contrast and lightness around), the final piece in grayscale looks like this:

certainly not perfect but an improvement to the composition yipeepee

i also used a blur + color dodge dupe layer for the lineart, slight blur on the bg and distant parts of the subject (couldn't help myself), and an overlay to give the shadows some nice hues yayyy

Finally working on a new angry adopt after a long time not touching my adopts. I lost all my materials since I had to format my pc, so I will be making them in this new format / new shading as well.

I desperately have the desire to draw but the heat makes it hard to have motivation. This is a 30 minute sketch to wind down the night after getting frustrated with a different composition I scrapped (completely unrelated to this drawing). If there's something I can count on it's Pidge being the source of a stress free drawing.

Fixing up my Flight Rising dragon bios... still very fond of this painting of Holg, though in retrospect I should have made all the little critters more obvious because even I forget they're there sometimes lol

Holg is... sort of the clan's equivalent of a field zoologist/biologist, in the sense that he spends most of his time out under the ocean somewhere tracking down creatures he's never seen before and learning about them. Occasionally he does this by hunting them down and bringing back their corpses. Dragon science, you know how it is.

This pic was very much inspired by Eskmo - Lifeline, which is Holg's song. Holg is vaguely themed on "fauna" and his nest brother Belg is "flora", which if you're me means one is BLOOD and one is SESSILE INVERTEBRATES (and seagrass)
