So how did you like the girls’ performances in Krasnoyarsk?
Frankly speaking, Sofia Akatieva’s Mulan always makes me cry. Actually I’d like to comment more on this program, so I’ll probably do that in a specially dedicated post bit later.
As to Sofia Samodelkina, in her interview after the free skate she admitted she was inspired by Alexandra Trusova storming five quads at Chelyabinsk Test Skates. Therefore she landed three quads which brought her to the third place. It is also quite peculiar that both Sofia S. and her idol Sasha sadly failed to land their 3As in SP (Sasha competed in the U.S. International in Boston).
Let’s also congratulate Anastasia Zinina with her debut together with Evgeny Plushenko. Her quad toeloop as well as artistic skills (look at her arms in motion!) are amazing.

JGP in Russian Krasnoyarsk: Upcoming Intrigue
Why is it worth watching?
Don’t know how about you guys, but I am absolutely intrigued by the upcoming junior ladies’ performances alone.
Having checked on the entries, I have found five Russian young ladies claimed to compete in Krasnoyarsk. And guess what? They represent three different skating schools: Sambo-70 Khrustalny (team Tutberidze), Angels of Plushenko and CSKA (team Davydov). Let’s take a closer look at each of them.
Sofia Akatieva
Sofia is a young star of team Tutberidze and honestly I am really looking forward to seeing her performance. She is both powerful and artistic skater, skillful and musical. Her ultra c arsenal is astonishing. I bet you often come across jokes that team Tutberidze has a conveyer of young skaters, so it seems they actually created Sofia taking all the best from Kostornaia (her 3A and artistic skills), Trusova (her quads, cantilever and physical strength) and even Kamila Valieva (her ability to do both 3A and quads in one program). A perfect soldier, huh?
What is more, her free program has not been changed, so Sofia will perform as Mulan this season again. What a breathtaking piece of art, if you ask me. This girl is such a warrior indeed. Let’s wish her luck in the coming season!
Sofia Samodelkina
She is not just another Sofia. She is the Sofia. Ladies and gentlemen, Ms Samodelkina. Coached by Sergey Davydov and representing CSKA skating club. She is quite popular in Russia recently (and maybe overseas, too, although she has not participated in any international competitions yet). She was thought to be the only Russian skater outside team Tutberidze who was able to perform ultra c elements. For instance, her weapons are 3A and 4S. Sadly, she is still losing to Tutberidze girls in components. Anyway, this is a very promising and hardworking young lady who is not afraid of difficulties. Really worth watching and being rooted for!
Elizaveta Berestovskaya
Elizaveta from team Davydov (CSKA) will substitute Daria Sadkova (team Tutberidze) at this Grand Prix. She is another spectacular skater, known to the Russian audience as she took part at the show “Ice Age. Kids” (Ледниковый период. Дети.). However, there is a peculiar story behind her. Liza was initially coached by Sergey Davydov at CSKA, but then she transferred to Eteri Tutberidze, who was looking for young talents. Suddenly it turned out Alexandra Trusova was leaving Angels of Plushenko and returning back to team Tutberidze, which made Berestovskaya go back to Davydov, as there was no vacant place for her in team Tutberidze anymore.
Well, in my opinion this is not for the worst as Sergey Davydov is a young promising coach who will definitely succeed in his career. No doubt one day his skaters will be totally prepared to compete with Tutberidze girls.
P.S. According to Sergey Davydov, Liza had an injury, so she may not do any quads this time.
Anastasia Zinina
This is definitely the new name. When I first noticed Anastasia in the Moscow Championship 2020, she was representing Snow Leopards skating school. She is also known for her participation in the same show with Elizaveta Berestovskaya (Ice age. Kids), where she was outperformed by Liza. Later she showed the world she could actually land quad toeloop. This is exactly when Evgeny Plushenko took the stage. Interestingly, this summer Anastasia won the Moscow Championship 2021, outperforming both Elizaveta Berestovskaya and Sofia Samodelkina. Now Anastasia is skating in the group of Angels of Plushenko. Let’s watch and see what she will deliver this season.
Elizaveta Kulikova
Another new name for today. Elizaveta is also coached by Sergey Davydov at CSKA and has also performed at Ice Age show. According to Sergey Davydov, she does not execute any ultra c elements yet and did not do so at the junior test skates in August as well.
However, her artistry will probably be in place in her picturesque short program to Les parapluies de Cherbourg and in her free skate to the soundtrack to the Turkish tv drama Çalikusu.
Bears are never enough 🐻
Appreciation post for Anna Shcherbakova’s fan team.
Just look at the amount of these cute plushies and realize how dedicated Anna’s fans are!
“We couldn’t order the bears directly so we had to ask fellow Chinese fans to buy them”, - states the leader of the fan club on their Instagram page (@teamshcherbakova).
“You can’t imagine how amazing these people are. And we’re incredibly happy such people support Anya. When we saw these huge boxes with an enormous amount of bears we even got afraid that maybe Anya would refuse to meet with us lol. But we felt relieved when she posted “bears are never enough””.
After Anna’s SP performance in Chelyabinsk Team Shcherbakova organized a “bearfall”flashmob similar to that happening after each performance of Yuzuru Hanyu.
Anna herself seemed delighted and a happy smile glowed up her fairy face.

The first impression. Evgenia Medvedeva’s Extremely loud and incredibly close

It’s been 20 years since the tragedy of September 11 in the United States which claimed lives of thousands of people. “Extremely loud and incredibly close” designed by the Russian ice dance silver medalist of 2002 Olympics Ilia Averbukh especially for Evgenia Medvedeva is a tribute to the victims of terrorist attacks all over the world.
World Championship 2017 in Helsinki. Young Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia takes the ice to perform her free program. She’s not nervous even a bit, absolute concentration in her eyes. The bustling cheering crowd goes silent at once, all eyes on her fragile silhouette. They already recognize this hairstyle, this gradient dress. They’re waiting for a miracle. And so here it comes.
With the first sounds of her music, Evgenia transforms: her heroine casually sees her loved one off but then she suddenly hears about a terrorist attack. Until the very last moment she does not know if her loved one is alive or not. The crowd is speechless but bursts with extremely loud and incredibly close applause with the first perfectly landed jump. Emotions, music and elements combine all together when Evgenia light as a feather flies about the ice and invites spectators to watch her story which inevitably finds its way into every heart. Just watching her makes you forget you’re actually watching sports competition. She executes the hardest (at that time) jumps as if it costs her nothing, so it seems like she does not bother about the elements at all. Evgenia performs just like a movie star, her role is so fulfilled and complete. And you can hear the abrupt sounds of chaos happening in the background, the news presenter talking about the plane crash, horrified witnesses screaming which fills your heart with fear and anxiety. However, as you watch Evgenia’s effortless gliding and gracefully performed elements, your anxiety steps back to give a way to admiration. At the same time the program still keeps you electrified as you don’t know what happened to her loved one, is he alright or she lost him forever? But Evgenia does not reveal this in the end and lets the spectators reflect on the final themselves. Yet her emotions in the end are ambiguous: you can tell her look towards the sky either means she is grateful for salvation or she is silently asking “why did this happen to us?”. Personally I prefer the first option. Anyway we should be really grateful to Ilia Averbukh for this masterpiece.
- Where does her force come from? – commented Tatiana Tarasova. Indeed, if we look closer at Evgenia’s skating, the closest metaphor for it is the silent force, without any doubt. The way she delivers her performance with fragility and unstoppable power combined, the way she made the jumps and other elements look so easy is incredible. There is a sensation that music gives her wings to create the beautiful magic on ice.
The silent force is the exact metaphor which becomes the brand of team Tutberidze in the future.
It is also remarkable that it is Evgenia’s programs which for some reason reflected Eteri’s soul the most. It is well-known that Eteri Tutberidze herself became a witness of a terrorist attack in the USA in her youth. Moreover, the other program for Medvedeva was inspired by the story of Eteri’s daughter Diana Davis.
This is all about my first impression in the new history of figure skating.
11 сентября 2021 года стало двадцатой годовщиной трагедии, произошедшей в США и унёсшей жизни тысяч человек. Программа «Жутко громко и запредельно близко», поставленная российским хореографом и серебряным призером Олимпийских игр 2002 года в танцах на льду Ильей Авербухом для Евгении Медведевой, стала посвящением жертвам террористических атак по всему миру.
Чемпионат мира в Хельсинки, 2017 год. На лед для исполнения произвольной программы под флагом России выходит юная Евгения Медведева. На лице девушки ни намека на волнение, в глазах – сосредоточенность. Некогда бушующая и рукоплещущая арена вмиг замолкает, затаив дыхание, тысячи глаз прикованы к тонкой фигуре спортсменки. Этот образ уже хорошо всем знаком, и зрители ждут от нее чуда. И вот, чудо происходит.
Лишь только слышны первые ноты композиции, как Евгения тотчас мастерски перевоплощается: ее героиня провожает дорогого ей человека, а впоследствии узнает о произошедшем теракте; до последнего момента она не знает, жив ли он. Зал замирает, но с первым же идеально приземленным прыжком взрывается аплодисментами. Эмоции, музыка, элементы – все это сливается воедино, когда парящая надо льдом Евгения вовлекает зрителей в свою историю, что проникает в сердце каждого зрителя. Глядя на нее, забываешь о том, что находишься на спортивных соревнованиях; такое чувство, будто фигуристка даже не задумывается об элементах – настолько легко ей покоряются сложнейшие (на тот момент) многооборотные прыжки и связки. Евгения, словно киногероиня, исполняет свою роль безупречно «от» и «до», а ты слышишь обрывки из новостей о крушении самолета, испуганные возгласы очевидцев тех событий, и сердце наполняется тревогой. В то же время скольжение тонких лезвий по льду настолько невесомо, а изящество исполнения элементов так завораживает, что тревога в некоей мере утихает, хотя программа до самого финала держит в напряжении. Что же случилось с близким человеком героини? Все ли с ним в порядке, или она потеряла его навсегда? Но этого Евгения не раскрывает и предоставляет зрителю возможность самому закончить историю. Между тем, эмоции фигуристки в финале неоднозначны: ее взгляд, обращенный ввысь, можно трактовать и как благодарность за избавление, либо она вопрошает «почему же это случилось с нами?». Лично я склоняюсь к первому варианту, а за постановку сего шедевра отдельное спасибо Илье Авербуху.
«Откуда в этой девочке такая сила?» - комментировала прокат Татьяна Тарасова. Действительно, если мы отвлечемся от истории и обратим внимание на катание спортсменки (хотя, в данном случае даже несколько странно звучит слово «спортсменка»; возможно, было бы уместнее сказать «актриса»), то оно, несомненно, ближе всего к эпитету «безмолвная сила». То, каким образом Евгения сочетала в этом прокате хрупкость и в то же время неудержимую мощь, то, с какой легкостью она заходила на прыжки и делала всевозможные сложные заходы и выезды, поражает. Музыка словно дает ей крылья и силу, чтобы творить прекрасную магию на льду.
Именно этот образ хрупкой, но в то же время мощной «безмолвной силы» станет визитной карточкой группы Тутберидзе в будущем.
Интересно также и то, что именно в программы Евгении Этери Тутберидзе по некоторой причине вкладывала большую часть самой себя. Как известно, Этери Георгиевна в юности также стала очевидцем террористической атаки в США. Кроме того, история ее дочери Дианы Дэвис стала основой другой программы Медведевой – «Слышу, не слышу».
Таково было мое первое впечатление в новейшей истории фигурного катания.
Identify Figure Skating Jumps, In Real Time
So, we once did a gifset on jump identification, in slow-mo. But it’s time for an ambitious upgrade — now, identify jumps in real time, without slowing down or pausing.
All skaters land (clean) jumps in the same way: on the outside edge of one foot, gliding backwards. Skaters who rotate counterclockwise during their jump will land on their right foot while skaters who rotate clockwise will land on their left. All the examples below feature skaters who rotate counterclockwise.
Therefore, the first and most important thing in jump identification is to scrutinize the takeoff instead of anything else. Look carefully at what the skater does with their feet before they jump, anything else is not particularly relevant in naming a jump.
Toe Jumps
If the skater strikes the ice with their toe pick, it’s either a Toeloop, Flip or Lutz. These jumps are known as Toe Jumps because of the skater’s use of their toe pick.
The Flip
Skaters usually do a turn immediately before this jump. Notice how Zhenya swings her right foot while doing the turn; this is very characteristic of flip jumps. This is a very common entry into the flip, but it’s not a necessary one, skaters can opt to perform a flip with a different entry.
Zhenya rotates towards the foot that is placed on the ice during her takeoff. Her own torso and leg are “blocking” the direction of her rotation, such that she is assuming a closed body position just before takeoff.
Take note of how the foot that is placed on the ice is on an inside edge. If a skater uses an outside edge instead, they will be penalized for incorrect technique.
The Toeloop
Skaters usually do a turn immediately before this jump. Again, while this is a very common entry to the toeloop, skaters don’t necessarily have to do it.
Yuzuru rotates away from the foot that is placed on the ice during his takeoff. His torso and leg are not “blocking” the direction of his rotation, such that he is assuming an open body position just before takeoff.
The Lutz
Skaters don’t usually do any turn immediately before this jump. Instead, they do a long backwards glide. Notice how Yuna gradually deepens the outside edge on her gliding foot as she goes backwards; this is one distinct indication of a lutz jump. Once again, this is just a very common entry to the lutz but skaters can use other entries too.
Yuna rotates towards the foot that is placed on the ice during her takeoff. Her own torso and leg are “blocking” the direction of her rotation, such that she is assuming a closed body position just before takeoff.
Take note of how the foot that is placed on the ice is on an outside edge. If a skater uses an inside edge instead, they will be penalized for incorrect technique. Skaters who make this mistake often switch to the inside edge at the very last second, just before takeoff.
Edge jumps
If the skater does not strike the ice with their toe pick, it’s either a Salchow, Loop or Axel. These jumps are known as Edge Jumps because the skater takes off from the edges of their blades.
The Salchow
The skater’s legs assume a “/ \” shape.
After that, the skater sweeps his right foot forward and takes off.
The Loop
The skater’s legs assume an “X” shape.
After that, the skater briefly “sits” down before launching into the jump.
The Axel
Skaters typically do a long glide backwards before this jump. This is common but not necessary.
After that, they turn their head and take off in a forward direction.
And that’s all you need to know! It also helps if you watch videos of many, many skaters, so you can practice identifying jumps with these common indicators from various camera angles. :)
As a challenge, try identifying all the jumps in these programs (x, x, x, x, x) and let us know if these tips were useful! (Not all the takeoffs in those videos are the typical ones, but we’re sure you’ll get the hang of it eventually if you watch enough skating). ^^;;;
