we also had a really good conversation in class today about how the us national parks system is deeply, deeply tied to european ideas of the sublime + picturesque, how yellowstone and yosemite were easy choices but the everglades required intense reframing in order to make them “beautiful” before they could be awarded environmental preservation, and how there is one (1) national park here in illinois, and it’s abraham lincoln’s neighborhood in springfield the nat’l parks have not given consideration to illinois wetlands or prairies or even our shore along lake michigan. any nature based parks here are state parks, not part of the national parks system and ofc this is not getting into racism and colonial agriculture and viewing the land as utility to be used and so on
