A meditative piece for today's painting of the day: 'Barbados no Arashi I' mixed media painting on wood, 48" x 48" x 3.5" (deep). Arashi translates to "tempest" or "storm" in Japanese. Painted after sitting and watching the weather change every few minutes on the horizon at the southern tip of Barbados when I lived there back in 2009-10. The southern tip is where the bold, dark blue, cooler and strong Atlantic Ocean met the calmer, turquoise, warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. The power of their meeting was palpable, energetic, and at times tumultuous with periods of serenity and calm. But always magical, beautiful and mesmerizing. Watching the oceans and seas is hypnotic, gives me perspective, and always leaves me with a sense awe of the world's natural elements and power. How something can embody so many feelings, sensations, and qualities at the same time. Experiencing transition, change, or preparing for a new chapter in life often feel this way...exciting, energetic, powerful. It stirs things up and moves things around. "Orange KodaiShi" will accompany the piece in my last post to its new home. (Mixed media on canvas 18"x36" and 3" deep.) // This series was the beginning of my fascination and effort to capture histories on a surface. Kodaishi translates to "ancient history" in Japanese. I love things and places that are aged; they tell a story, or multiple stories, that aren't always clear. I love imagining what those stories are, who was there, what experiences took place, whose hands touched and made that place, etc. My goal was to channel another time, to create layers of history found on surfaces - like that of an old church, fresco wall, warehouse metal door, or unintentionally layered graffitied mural, using various media including paint, handmade washi paper, wax, and sand to just name a few. This beaut, "Meiji Garden II" has finally found her forever home! She's being shipped off in a couple days. // Every painting has a story. Here is hers: I started painting her years ago. Sometimes, a painting just isn't completely ready to be finished. This one needed some time to explore before she could tell me how to complete her. That time was 2 years. Amen. Here's something I wholeheartedly subscribe to: Use your hands!! Make something. Write something...with a pen, crayon, feather. Plant something. Fold something. Reorganize something. Read something. Play something. Look up. Look around you. For goodness sake move beyond the limited space of your screen. Put it down and walk away. It is SO limiting. It is one tool of so many and its best to start with the tools we were born with...our hands. We don't always know where our creative work comes from but ideas come from everywhere, and usually a tactile, human experience, will give you a pretty good idea - because that's living your life, interacting, using your senses, and creating a memory. Creativity is organic, mystical, and intangible at times. It comes from organic movement, from exploring, from not overthinking too much, from trying something new. Discovery often comes unplanned. Do. Make. Try. Live. Look. Ask. Wonder. Flashback to a moment of content and happiness - in my ideal element! Doing my favorite thing...making something...quietly, in an open air studio in Bali, surrounded by nature and its elements.
