Flashback: Her Dress, Their Hats
Three ladies stop traffic on West 33rd Street in Manhattan during New York Fashion Week.
And We're Back...
Various obligations have kept me from doing one of my favorite things: photographing New Yorkers on the streets of NYC. Today's entry was captured in the West Village. The photo features a stylish gentleman rocking stripes, vintage Adidas, and a sweet leather jacket.
More to come.
New York Fashion Week Spring 2016: Street Scene
New York Fashion Week makes its grand return during a balmy September in the city. The bi-annual event has relocated from its pristine headquarters at Lincoln Center to two new, and grittier venues in Midtown West and West Soho, respectively. Despite the change of scenery, the crowd outside of NYFW is as fabulous as ever.Â
Patterns and prints proved to be a popular choice on days 1 & 2 of NYFW Spring 2016, as fashion lovers hit the streets rocking outfits that would make your well-dressed grandmother proud. From black and white attire adorned with stripes and flowers, to colorful ensembles that incorporated a little bit of everything, these ladies did not disappoint.
Black and White on West 14th
Rush hour in the Meatpacking District is a vibrant affair. From corporate-types hurrying to happy hour and commuters heading to the subway, to camera-toting tourists photographing the wonders of New York and the creative class ending their workday, the intersection of West 14th and 9th Avenue attracts people of all stripes.
Every so often, though, a fashionable quicksilver character will appear in the sea of sameness. The fashion-forward New Yorker in black and white was gracious enough to stop and finish her cigarette before entering the Apple Store. Wearing a monochromatic ensemble and a pair of stylish loafers that took my breath away, she exuded style and a subtle fierceness beyond compare.
Painting Blue
Men's Fashion Week has come and gone, but these two looks are worth revisiting. I've noticed a few women rocking painter's coveralls of late. However, this is the first time I've seen them with paint splattered all over. Her eye-catching, platinum-blonde do is the perfect accessory as it takes the outfit to another level.
I snapped quite a few photos of the gentleman in the double-breasted suit; this is my favorite. I love everything about his look, from the hair and sunglasses to the color of the suit. Well done, sir.
No Basic Men
The derisive term basic bitch is all the rage, but anyone with a discerning eye has noticed the abundance of basic-ass men that dominate our culture. From douche bros and dime-a-dozen hipsters, to potbellied fellas in dad jeans and football jerseys, the lack of creativity is depressing. The street style outside of Men's Fashion Week flipped the script with a series of unique looks that raised the bar for guys. Whether it was finishing off an outfit with gender-bending accessories or dabbling in cultural attire, these men took risks.
Stylish gentlemen bridged the east-west gap in Indian/Pakistani-inspired Kurtas that exuded a sophisticated edge. A fashionable male's whimsical twist on the school-boy uniform consisted of pairing a shirt, tie and shorts with a striking pink blazer. And a refined man made a splash wearing a skinny-fit purple suit that was perfectly tailored for his physique.
As these fashion-forward gentlemen illustrate, our sartorial choices are infinite; especially, when we're willing to cross heteronormative lines.
Men's Fashion Week Day 1
The inaugural Men's New York Fashion Week is in full swing across Manhattan, as designers embrace an overlooked audience: fashionable gentlemen. With ambassadors ranging from supermodel Tyson Beckford to NBA superstar Dwyane Wade, big-name sponsors such as Amazon Fashion, and runway shows from the likes of Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, and Public School, Men's Fashion Week is off to a rousing start.Â
While Daily Show alum, Samantha Bee, enjoyed a few laughs at the Zoolander-esque models' expense, we partook in a bit of style watching with the square-jawed crowd outside the shows. Between downpours and glimpses of sunshine, stylish New Yorker men hit the streets around West Soho's Skylight Clarkson Square wearing an array of patterns and prints. But the takeaway from day one was the love of sunglasses. As rain fell around them, the fellas continued to sport their summer sunnies in style.Â

Queen Tanu on the Throne
I adore Kangana Ranaut. I simply adore her. The stunning beauty stands out in Bollywood, a mythical world with a limitless supply of drop-dead gorgeous starlets. Her look, acting ability, and the fact that she gives two fucks are a major turn-on. From churning out great performances in countless films to turning down big bucks to endorse skin-lightening products, she’s easily my favorite celebrity.
Last night, I ventured over to Times Square (shudder) to check out her latest release, Tanu Weds Manu Returns. The film is one of the biggest Bollywood hits of the year, with Ranaut garnering rave reviews from critics and fans for her superb performances in dual roles. The film was quite enjoyable, and the rest of the packed house seemed to love it as well. The diversity of the audience and the fact that so many people ventured out on a midweek night are a testament to her appeal.
The breadth of Kangana's acting ability is on display in Tanu Weds Manu Returns, as she steals the film with her impressive comedic and dramatic performances. Coming on the heels of her award-winning turn in the equally enjoyable Queen, B-town’s most bankable leading lady has put the world on notice.
Kangana’s meteoric rise to the top of the Bollywood acting world is rivaled only by her status as a fashion icon. In my humble opinion, she’s the most fashionable celeb on the planet. Whether she's killing it on red carpets or hitting the streets of the world’s leading cities, the Queen of Bollywood turns heads with her exceptional sense of style.
Her sartorial choices are as varied as her on-screen roles. Kangana rocks everything from highly stylized couture looks to off-the-rack pieces. A confident risk taker of the highest order, the Tanu Weds Manu Returns' star often shows up to high-profile events sans makeup.
In a world where carbon-copy looks reign supreme, Ms. Ranaut has earned the crown by doing it her way. My only regret is not being able to photograph the Bollywood bombshell during her extended stint in New York. Maybe someday.
