WHAT IS THE ‘SOULMATE PROJECT’?
in the not-too-distant future, the world’s governments have banded together as one, & in an attempt to ‘erase prejudices & encourage tolerance’ & created what is called ‘the soulmate project’. it’s simple : ‘on your 18th birthday, your name is input into a computer system & you are matched up with your soulmate - your missing half.’ &, in the government’s eyes, that’s exactly what happens. of course, it’s anything but simple. the match-ups are purely random, & more often than not, they create more problems then they were supposed to solve. but it doesn’t matter : once you have your soulmate, you’re stuck with them for life. you mightn’t be soulmates in the romantic sense ( the government acknowledged the platonic aspect of soulmates after the third year of match-ups ), but you’re still soulmates - two people meant to spend the rest of their lives together. & if the government finds out that that anyone has broken this sacred bond ( & they will find out ) for any reason whatsoever - the parties responsible will be SEVERELY punished.

once paired up, the government allocates you & your soulmate a house to live in.
‘1984′-style winston/julia relationships allowed - but the government is watching & if caught, you will be punished.
