Plastic Age - Forever?

CRITIQUE: THE POSITIVES
Title. The movie’s premise is perfectly captured in the title “Plastic Age - Forever.” Apart from the fact that the movie focuses on the issue of plastics, the title itself gave me the perception that plastics would probably be around us for a very long period of time. It also compelled me to think about whether our generation will be remembered as the plastic age, leaving a devastating mark on our history and passing it to following generations.
Introduction. The film’s opening sequence has a strong hook since it presents a futuristic scene that piqued my interest in what the earth and humankind will look like in the future. I would say that it saddened me since it represents a future that we most certainly do not want to come true in the ensuing generations. It led me to wonder if there is a way to stop this from happening in the future.
Content. The film’s content is incredibly educational, reliable, and current with the times. With a scientific approach that was still simple for its intended audience to understand, the video highlighted and addressed the issue of plastics. I liked that they incorporated interviews with scientists and other experts on the plastic industry, as it made the movie seem rather credible and gave us reason to believe the information that was presented.
Evidence. It was good to see that the movie made extensive use of both statistical data and visual evidence. Through the utilization of this evidence, I was able to understand the scope of the issue and the depth of the plastic-related issues it presents.
CRITIQUE: POINTS TO IMPROVE
Type. The film was, in my opinion, more of a documentary than a film. By definition, a film differs from a documentary because films are intended to entertain audiences whereas documentaries strive to inform, enlighten, and motivate audiences.
Engagement. The movie wasn’t nearly as interesting as I had anticipated it to be because its primary goal was to educate and increase public awareness about the problems with plastics. Nevertheless, it was fascinating to watch.

Plastics have a distinct and practical set of characteristics. Its molecular structure can be modified to exhibit various properties, such as flexibility or hardness, transparency or opacity. They are generally simple and inexpensive to produce, durable, lightweight, and waterproof. The majority of modern plastics are made from fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum and numerous industries have thousands of patented plastics, all of which have special qualities that make them suitable for their intended use.
Low cost, durability, and corrosion resistance make plastics inherently irreplaceable in many applications. Plastic is most frequently used for packing and architectural elements like piping. Plastic is often crucial to infection and contamination control in the medical sector. It is not possible to recycle the syringes, pipettes, and gloves used in biomedicine and healthcare. While the overuse of plastic packaging is alarming, it is essential to package goods in order to protect their quality while being transported or to preserve food quality and safety or freshness. While some may consider small or travel-size toiletries and personal hygiene products to be wasteful, they are essential for giving some of our most vulnerable populations access to cheap sanitary choices, such as the homeless or low-income households.

The issue with plastic waste is one of waste management.

While plastic is resilient, this also means that, if improperly managed, plastic waste could be kept in our environment for millennia. While plastics rapidly break down into individual parts as a result of abrasion, their polymer chains break down into other individual components only at extreme temperatures, such as in certain chemical recycling processes. This phenomenon causes the presence of microplastics. Microplastics are also a cause for concern as they are ubiquitous in the ocean and can pose physical and toxicological risks to organisms and humans.
The "linear economy" paradigm, also known as "take-make-discard," is still prevalent in today’s society. In this model, raw resources are used to build products, which are then discarded after a brief period of usage. If we can keep in mind the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—in that precise order of priority—transitioning to a more sustainable lifestyle is not rocket science.
Reduce. By consuming only what we necessitate and minimizing useless surplus, we may reduce our overall consumption all while preserving our environment.
Reuse. Reusing existing materials will extend their useful purpose. It's about giving our materials a second life by repairing or recycling them.
Recycle. In a circular economic paradigm, closing the loop requires recycling the garbage we eventually produce. Recycling plastic is undoubtedly an important step on the path of a circular economy but going there takes effort at each and every stage of a product's entire life cycle, from creation through waste disposal.

To stop plastic waste from polluting our planet, we must work together.

The world is starting to realize that it is time to address the issue of plastic waste. Additionally, there needs to be a solution for the inadequate waste management systems. However, in actuality, there is no quick fix to this problem. Instead of switching from one single-use lifestyle to another, we should alter our lifestyle to achieve a balance between sustainability and convenience. We should also push businesses and the government to collaborate to promote the most effective environmental solutions. Businesses across a variety of sectors, including the fashion and healthcare sectors, have made commitments to be more circular, redesign packaging, or use recycled materials. Researchers are also working to create and improve new methods for manufacturing, sorting, and recycling plastics, and government agencies are rethinking their waste management strategies for creating recycling more widely available to the common people. All of these initiatives work to keep plastic waste out of the environment and assist us transition to a circular economy that is sustainable and maximizes the worth of our plastic waste. Although this mission is challenging, it can definitely be accomplished with global effort and cooperation.
