I have made these pieces to show how the patron saints have inspired me to go all out with the theme of beauty and the macarbe. My favourite piece is the first one as the gems contrast well against the skeleton and the huge amount of gems make the piece really stand out due to the lack of subtlety. This is in huge contrast to my other pieces which have all been more aesthetically pleasing unlike this piece which is more raw and eye-catching.
for this project I have done research from a book called ‘celestial bodies’ in this book there is information on the bodies of patron saints and how their followers decorated their bodies after they died. this has inspired me to take my drawing of myself and decorate it like a ’holy’ corpse. I will be doing this because it has a funny sense of irony as I follow the wiccan religion and throughout history catholic Christian has prosecuted and looked down on anyone who does'’ t follow their religion. I like the composition of the second image as it puts a lot of focus on the face using the leading lines of the hand and the dark fabric that surrounds the face. this piece has inspired me to use a lot gems in my piece to simulate the cluttered style of the body.
these are screen shot s from my animation which is in a classic stop motion gif style and includes quite a large element of surprise as the bee crawls on screen and then turns into a maggot causing the girl to appear. I crated this piece to have another shot at giving my work an element of surprise and I think is was relatively successful I would like to make the animation faster and include more but doing so increases the space the animation takes up and its already to big to put on this blog.
i created these pieces while the resin was drying they are images of me as a skeleton because I have a fast metabolism and I was often compared to a living skeleton when I was younger so my lack of weight is something I am quite self conscious about.
I did this spiderweb of what I could do with maggots so that I can have a clear idea of what direction I want to take my 3d work. In the end I decide to make some resin maggots that are full of gems and glitter so they go back to the idea of beauty contrasting grim themes and subjects. I have decided that this contrast is important to my context as it give a reason for why people are so fascinated with gore.
I then visited the other 3d workshop and ask about resin as while the structure is more solid it is also more versatile and will allow me to add more features to the maggots. So I make a larger mold and use this to pour plaster for a second mold. which I use to make a large maggot but they keep turning out to thin and breaking and being thrown away before I can photograph them. So I decide to use a non-fired large maggot to make a silicone mold which I can use for resin.
I then had the idea to take the concept of the maggots into a 3d medium like Jessica Harrison does with the statues. I did this as I felt it would make the maggots more relateable to my audience as they would be able to feel them and see them in a 3d view. In the end I decided to make the maggots out of silicone as it has a wobbly structure which feels like either flesh or skin which adds to the grotesque theme of the maggots.
I then had the idea to make the bee a prop and add it to my actual mouth. This looks quite effective and solidifies the idea of the bee being symbolic to me.
Next, I created a series of patterns from the maggots in my last piece as I wanted to experiment with creating slightly more subtlety In my work which I think I achieved quite well. I believe that this pattern would look quite effective on a shirt as it would allow the beauty of the repetition to contrast with the maggots and the idea of a person wearing the maggots also adds to my idea of the human brain being drawn to gore.
I created this piece to further my work by attempting to focus on a more specific area of the face. I have chosen to draw my own mouth with a bee and larvae because I am quite a reserved and shy person and bee's tend to be very impartial to violence unless themselves or their hive is in danger. I also chose a bee because when a queen bee gets to old or becomes more trouble than their worth bee's will start to cuddle her to death by piling themselves into her and wiggling to produce heat, this is a factor I have chosen to represent my needy and validation dependent side, as I suffer from anxiety disorder which gives me a constant sense of inferiority and fear which can cause me to lash out like bee's when they feel attacked.
