VERSE UPDATE: HUNTER (EXCLUSIVE)

When John was young, his family was attacked by wolves. As a military family, his father had taught him and his 3 older brothers how to fight should the need ever arise. But, more than just if they needed to defend from other humans, they were taught to survive against the things that go bump in the night. His father had joined a secret guild of hunter when he left the military, having been exposed to it by someone he had met on the battlefield when he came face to face with a vampire in the night. 

John was 8 when the wolves attacked, but he managed to drive them back. Unfortunately, he and his mother were the only ones who survived. They moved to the city to try and start new, his mother trying to keep her only son left away from that life that lost them everything, but John found his way into the guild by the time he turned 16. He chooses to keep it from his mother instead of letting her worry, but he is sure she knows what he gets up to in the middle of the night. 

He found an apartment and moved out when he turned 20 and became a full time hunter for the Salem Guild. He hunts indiscriminately, taking down all creatures of all sorts, no questions asked. It’s gotten him into a lot of trouble as he can often be far more reckless than the others. He’s killed just as many normal humans as supernatural creatures simply because they were suspicious in his eyes. His only desire is to rid the world of all the things that are unnatural and have hurt other humans.

John Doe was born to a military family with three brothers. His father was a well known lieutenant, so all eyes were on the boys to follow in his footsteps. John was the youngest, his brothers all 2 and 4 years older than him, the oldest two being twins. His mother was the typical housewife, taking care of the kids until they went off into the military. 

By the time he turned 18, he enlisted for service, like his brothers before him, and worked his way up through the ranks in no time. He quickly made a name for himself as the most ruthless of his family. His low level of empathy made it easy for him to pull the trigger whenever it was necessary. Nothing held him back except his own pride. When the time came to be sent off to war, he fought hard and won the battles for himself, but in the end was the only one to return home. None of his brothers survived and his father was given an honorable discharge for a debilitating injury. John took his place and led his own platoon into battle again and again. 

Soldiers who were trained under Captain John Doe were made to be just as ruthless as the man was himself. They often got themselves in trouble for overstepping to accomplish their mission, but they absolutely never failed. John took great pride in this. He fought alongside his men, ensuring none of them held any more compassion than was necessary for other people. The term “Doe-eyed” was frequently passed around to refer to the soldiers who were trained under John who were easily the most vicious, cruel, and well disciplined in the army. 

It wasn’t long before it started to cause issues with other platoons and allies. Thus, cpt. John Doe was discharged and sent home, his platoon split up among the rest of the army. John was welcomed home by only his parents, though his fathers condition had significantly worsened, causing him to pass within the year he returned. John continues to take care of his mother, but he is very distant from her emotionally. He can’t connect with her the way his brothers or father could, which in turn sends her down into a deep depression. But, she forces a smile. He is her only son left.

Living on his own, John set up his own security company, hiring and training many who had served him in the army. Together they created the most loyal and secure body guards that money can buy. They are ready to hire by anyone who can afford it, including many shady figures and politicians. Each new recruit is put through rigorous training, for loyalty and discipline, the same sort that John used in the army. Except, to a much higher and harsher degree. Any who are seen as insubordinate or disloyal are immediately put to death, no questions asked. John gives them a chance to explain themselves, sure, but ultimately he alone determines if the weakness can be squashed out or if it needs to be taken out entirely. 

Many looking for security detail recommend getting Doe men. They will take a bullet for you without even a second thought.

Nothing. Nothing. 

Connor didn’t have the chance to react when she ducked out and went back out of the door. He turned and looked to her again, watching as the doors closed between them and he was taken back up in the elevator. Deviant behavior? No, impossible. The personality was made to be the way it is, sure, but he showed no sign of truly breaking. 

His LED swirled red as he was taken back to his meeting with Kamski. How he had tried to test him and his deviancy as well. At the time, he had chosen not to shoot, but it had been a mistake. Still... Even that mistake seemed to feed Kamski the one thing he wanted. Cyberlife’s last chance to save humanity is itself a deviant. The words still echoed in his mind, now accompanied by Jesse’s. Deviant behavior. This wasn’t just his personality. He stopped the elevator to get an answer from her.

“Fuck,” he cursed himself, scrunching his nose as he realized his mistake. Even getting her to admit he was truly Connor didn’t feel as good anymore. It was soured, something that would only eat away at him if he was given the chance. He needed to deal with this issue now, before it was too late. Before he was truly broken.

When he reached the floor once more, he took out his stun gun and turned the setting up to one that would damage his hard drive. He took the time on the way up to upload his memories back to the servers, everything up until his encounter with Jesse. It wasn’t a memory he needed, it would only aid in his downfall. He would not be able to serve CyberLife under such conditions. He stepped out of the elevator and back into the office where the members all looked confused at him.

He handed the stun gun to one member, the one to take note of his face before, “I have been compromised. You will need to reupload my memories into a new model.” He raised the mans hand with the stun gun to his chest, “It would be wise to scrap this body. Just in case.”

The man looked around at the others who were confused but just shrugged and gestured for him to do it. The man hesitated a moment longer before just pulling the trigger and watching the android drop, his LED swirling for a moment before going dark. 

“Take it down to the lab, let the techs sort it out,” one of the others said. The man with the stun gun just nodded, still unsure, but dragged the android out anyway.

Connor took the badge and just tucked it into the inner pocket of his jacket. His hands folded back behind him as he stepped back from her, “I am unfortunately not a mind reader. I was asking your opinion. Because if you ask me, it is a matter of pride. You just can’t see what you created destroyed. Yet,” he held his arms out to the side for a second before lowering them to his sides, “Here I am with a significant upgrade and you can’t accept that. Its sad really.”

He glanced to the side briefly again, allowing the elevator to move, returning to the main floor as he planned, though he remained standing in front of the doors, “As for me, I don’t care. It’s not my position to. When the time comes and the company does fall, as you say, I will be there to ensure that it does. Protecting it, as is my function.”

He sneered briefly, stepping closer to her once more, “Until then, you should learn to accept that your precious RK800 is not the only ‘Connor’ here. I am Connor. And you’ll do well to remember that.” As he finished the doors opened behind him.

Connor turned his head briefly to the control panel of the elevator, his LED flickering for a moment. He redirected it, wherever she wanted to go, she wasn’t anymore. He was going to force her to leave. At least, it was the intention, until she said he was beneath the RK800. Beneath his predecessor? Beneath what he evolved from? The Elevator was approaching the lobby, between floors and high enough above the ground, when it came to a screeching halt. A voice tried to come over the intercom, the typical response to keep them calm, but Connor silenced it as soon as it came on. 

“I’m beneath him?” Connor stepped in front of her, turning to face her, “In what manner? Because I wasn’t given the same opportunities? Or it just your personal pride talking? Curious,” he tilted his head a bit, “Would you think the same if the RK800 had succeeded? If he did what he was instructed and destroyed every last deviant?”

A message popped up on his HUD, simply a question to what he was doing, why the elevator was stopped, and commanding him to move it and get her out of there. He just pushed them away. Oh she would be leaving, but not before he got his answers.

Connor’s eyes never left Jesse, the frustration and anger very clear there as she continued to disobey his commands. He didn’t like that. This was his job, she had to listen to him. She was in his domain, after all. One of the other executives took note of his expression, curious if he should say something about it, but before he could decide they were gone. 

Connor holstered his stun gun back under his arm and stopped beside Jesse once more. He was quiet as the elevator made its way back to them, his expression of anger not changing. When the doors opened, he simply followed her. 

“I don’t appreciate the disrespect,” Connor’s tone was no longer the friendly informant it had been originally. There was a hard edge to it, an authority that he held very tightly, “Just what is it that you hold so dearly about the RK800? Every decision made in that body was made by me. As much as it was him. You think that simply because he believes he has free will that he is so much better than me? I was there. Everything was manipulated for him to fail. And he did.”
