On this day, 4 September 1895, Xiang Jingyu, communist and one of the pioneers of the Chinese women’s movement was born. She was an advocate for women’s rights, as part of the liberation of the working class, and criticised sexist practices in the Communist Party. She led a strike of thousands of female silk factory workers in 1924. She was involved in organising women’s support for the Canton-Hong Kong workers’ strike the following year. Unfortunately she was betrayed and arrested in 1928 by French police. The French handed her over to the Kuomintang, who then executed her, but before her death she refused to give up any names of her comrades. I was at a union meeting the other day and the speaker had this great quote

“When you’re a public worker and politicians come around talking about lower taxes, that means they want to lay you off.”

And it’s true. I’m a librarian, so my wages come from tax dollars. Lower taxes means the library has to cut costs, and that means either lowering wages or laying people off. It’s a pretty direct cause and effect.

My dad was a mechanic for public school buses. The first time he took me to vote it was for a local election and he told me even if I did nothing else to vote to pass the budget so they could replace two school busses that were beyond repair so kids were safe.

Politicians who try to sell you on lower taxes are usually just trying to cut social services & public resources and screw over public workers.

100% I am trying to screw over public workers. If a public office is closed outside of business hours, it’s because they’re non-essential. If they’re non-essential, then the government shouldn’t be paying for it.

People always talk about how strong a survivor is for surviving a trauma. Now, that’s true for sure. However, I seldom see survivors getting the credit they should for after the trauma. Surviving the healing that comes after is hard, and painful. For some, it’s flashbacks, depression, anxiety, ptsd and the list goes on and on. The pain does not end because the event has. Survivors are survivors every goddamn day. And survivors are amazing.
