Sociology/anthropology/psychology shower thoughts on friendship
So I was in the shower thinking my thoughts 💭 and I started to ponder friendship. Do you ever wonder if friendship is a social construct like gender/gender stereotypes? Like the stereotypical best friends you see in movies and tv. I’ve always dreamed of having that kinda best friend since I was little but I constantly found myself in a group friendship setting, no single best friend but multiple good ones. A group which seemed to change members multiple times as I grew up.
It always made me think I was just a bad friend. I lost friends and gained new ones and lost those ones in an endless cycle. That I wasn’t interesting enough to keep a single person’s attention in order to become their best friend. I was thinking and thinking of what is wrong with me. I try to be a good friend, I’ll drop everything to pick you up when your car breaks down, I’ll take you to the doctors when you have the flu and are too sick to drive, I’ll listen to your midnight phones call when your parents are getting a divorce. Maybe I’m too narcissistic, I tend to lack interest in people’s lives, I have trouble reaching out first, I have no confidence being one on one with someone and be entertaining.
I’m a bad friend I’ll admit that but maybe I’m also just not a best friend type of friend. Maybe I’m a group friend. Maybe I do better in a small group where I don’t have to be spending my introvert social energy all the time. Where I can duck out of the conversation for a breather. What if friendship isnt just the best friend type of friendship but also the group friend or I’m here if you need me but I don’t have the social capacity to talk to you and see you everyday type of friend.
I think we need to culturally expand friend expectations, draw outside the norm in how we define a friend.
