The English department at my school uses Grammar Codes for correcting essays. It takes down the amount of colored ink (not just red ink) we have to mark on student papers.

Students will get their essays back with circled errors and numbers by them. Students have to, then, go through their paper in order of occurrence and number each code. Next they have to fix their errors by handwriting out the complete rule and then fix it under the rule.

That happens for grammar codes 2-12. For the first grammar code, which is misspelled word, students have to rewrite the word correctly 10 times.

They complain about this one out the wazoo!

My question is, how effective is it to make them write something over and over again to teach spelling?

If it is effective, please tell me because I’m looking for the research that backs it up.

If not, what other strategies could I use in my class to help students fix their misspelled word errors?

I have a coloring calendar, and with the face, I thought it would be cool this month to do something way different. Typically I stay in the lines, but this time I wanted to make my own lines. The colors surrounding the face are, for the most part, the different colors and patterns of world flags. Today a freshman told me he would rather read the "To be or not to be" play, and I had to explain to him the order in which we read Shakespeare in high school. He will eventually get to Hamlet. Let's start tragically easy with some star-crossed lovers. Then, as sophomores, it will become tragically difficult as we read about a man who is plagued by a hunger for power and a prophecy of death. I don't remember what junior year is, but I believe senior year will be the tragedy of all tragedies starring Gilderoy Lockhart as a man plagued by his father's ghost. I just noticed how many Shakespearean tragedies are read in high school. That is a tragedy in itself.

If I were stuck on a planet away from everything warm and comfortable, the following would be journal entries from this week:

Day 1: The control center informed me today that I am without climate control within my bunker. Shall I give up and freeze already?

Day 2: The lifeforms on this planet show no signs of stopping what sounds like laughter coming from their mouths at the way I dress. I fear there may not be intelligent life.

Day 3: The temperature is unbearable, but I have survived another day in the arctic wasteland. I have gathered additional layers in hopes to bear through it.

Day 4: I may have found intelligent life. The lifeforms are evolving and are feeling what I feel: the dark coldness of our situation.

Day 5: After 5 days on this planet, I am finally adapting to the climate within my bunker. The same cannot be said of what waits outside and for the next week...
