Hi, My name is Sowyer Making and I have been in the process of medically transitioning from female to male since I was a teenager. My journey started much earlier though, as I often wanted to be just like one of the boys- notability being on the boys baseball team as a youngster!

I have started hormone replacement therapy and have legally changed my name (yes, really, finally!) and top surgery is my next big step towards living the life I have always really wanted.

I have a large chest so will need a double incision mastectomy, much like you would see in women with breast cancer- the key difference will be the chest masculinization procedure that takes place immediately after. This procedure includes contouring and liposuction, and is not a covered cost.

My doctor has told me it is around 2,000 dollars, i debated with myself for a long time on if I would even try to reach this goal, as I am on social assistance after dealing with homelessness and incarceration but I believe if i can save 25 dollars every pay period, and with the help of my community- I may actually see the results I want, and be able to live in a body I feel comfortable in without having to restrict my chest, which can be uncomfortable and even painful at times.

Static was WILDLY popular in Brazil (a country where the population is over 50% black) and we had re-runs for YEARS on open television. Everyone who was a kid in the 2000s knew and loved him. As a result, every single Brazilian Con has a LOT of static cosplayers!

So, a couple of years ago, Comic Con Experience (the biggest con in Brazil, which is actually also the biggest con in the world!) invited one of Static’s creator Denys Cowan as one of the guests of honor.

Now. Thousands of people attend his panel. And cosplayers went NUTS because they could show their Static cosplay to the creator himself! What none of us expected was Debts Cowan’s reaction:

He cried on stage.

He had never seen Static cosplayers - especially not so many of them! And he had no idea the show was popular here! No one ever told him his character was so beloved! Years and years of reruns and he had no idea! He obviously created the character with his experiences and his community (Black North Americans) in mind. Still, he accidentally touched a whole other community of black people who could see themselves on the screen as a superhero!

Anyway he is a lovely person and one of the best, most memorable guests we had. And I think this is a nice reminder that your art might touch people you can’t even imagine would when creating it.

Edit: I said “the creator” when i should’ve said “one of the creators”, its edited now, but while he isnt the one who came to brazil it’s important to say Dwayne McDuffie was another important figure to static shock!! Both are black men who paved the way in comic book history! Thank you @sokumotanaka for pointing it out.

Years ago I met a man on a bus. He was in his late forties. He had graying red hair, a pressed tweed coat, and shining leather shoes. He smiled at me and I smiled back. As we were getting off the bus I felt him slip something hard into my pocket. I took it out and found an old key wrapped in a note. It had a set of coordinates and a date and time. On that date at that time I went to the set of coordinates. I got to the park at sunset. I had to go off the walking path to where the park shifted into a wild field of tall grass that almost swallowed me whole. Keeping walking I come to a stream. This was where the set of coordinates was leading me. I saw a waterlogged chest in the middle of the stream. I fought the current to get to the chest. My jeans, socks, and shoes were soaked. When I got to the chest I slid the key into the lock and turned it. Opening the chest I found there was nothing inside. This story was a waste of your time.

see this is exactly what I'm talking about. this labour is so incredibly invisibilised that there are real human beings, walking about amongst us, leading normal lives, etc., who earnestly believe that machines can make an item of clothing from start to finish.

Hey just in case someone on here doesn’t quite understand how labor intensive making a garment is, here is a list of things that (to the best of my knowledge) cannot be done by machine alone, from a costumer/tailor in training

Cutting - in my opinion, the most labor intensive part of the process. The amount of time/effort needed varies depending on the pattern and if seam allowance is included or marked separately, but no matter what this process can not be done by machine. Each and every panel and piece of fabric that goes into a garment must be cut by hand by a person.

Pinning/clipping - pinning (or clipping) is the stage at which you align the pieces you are going to be stitching together and hold them together with — you guessed it! — either pins or clips. This can not be done by machine.

Stitching - the actual sewing. This can be done by a sewing machine, but that machine still needs to be operated by a human being.

Ironing/pressing - two words that mean the same thing. The iron itself is a machine, but once again, it needs to be operated by a human being.

Finishing - depending on the technique you use, there are certain finishing techniques that can only be done by hand. But, let’s assume we’re talking about fast fashion, which is usually just finished with a simple overlock/serger. Once again: these machines need to be operated by people.

These are just the basic steps to making a garment, and don’t include textile arts that I am not as knowledgeable about, such as weaving, knitting, and crochet. Also, it is important to note that there are a lot of things that can only be done by hand, such as certain stitches and decorative techniques.

Also, the machinery being operated in textile factories is not equivalent to a domestic sewing machine. We’re talking about one of these guys:

See that gray cylinder under the table, behind the knee pedal? That’s the motor. These machines can sew through your fingers bones and all and not even stop. The people in these factories and sweatshops are operating heavy machinery, and are subject to all the risk that comes with that in addition to all of the work I mentioned above.

Please respect textile workers and continue the fight to eliminate the use of sweatshops and exploited labor in the fashion industry!
