“I’m not trying to be a damsel in distress. I’m just going to use my self-defence skills.” She mimed her self-proclaimed skills in a comical way, trying to make Violet laugh or at least smile. “Yeah, yeah. Don’t expect it’s gonna be a regular thing.”

“Okay, then you’d be awaken in a room with an angry murderer, exactly the kind of person you want angry at you,” she said. But if it was going to be something like that, Violet did have to give credit that you would need to be awake to have a chance of fending anybody off. “Your entire argument is based on an intruder, and I’d rather nobody be breaking into your room at all.” The idea of anything happening to Bea…She didn’t want to think about it. “Just tidy up some.”

“I’d rather be awake with a murderer in the room than fast asleep. I’d be able to defend myself, which would be better than just dying in my sleep.” She frowned, hoping that Violet was as confident in her ability to defend herself as she was. “I’m sure no one’ll try to break in. Just in case, is my argument. You have to be prepared for the worst, you know?” She decided to relent, with a sigh. “Okay. Just a little bit.”

There was a strong sense of deja vu Violet got from hearing that argument. It was exactly like Aunt Josephine and her stacks of cans. “Yes but then you’d be awake in the room with an angry burglar. I’d still rather sleep through a burglary.”

Beatrice raised her eyebrows, quite proud of herself for going forth with that argument. “Who said it’d be a burglar? It could be a kidnapper or a murderer and then I’d be in the room with an angry assailant and able to defend myself.”

“Well I’m gonna have to take your word for it because I can’t make out any method here. Only trip hazards and spread out mess. You’ve gotta be pulling my leg if this is in any way organized or you need to tell me how your mind works.”

“They’re not trip hazards if I know where they are. In fact, it’s a very good form of defence. What if someone tried to break into the house via my bedroom? They, unlike me, wouldn’t know the layout of my room, and would cause a loud noise, alerting us to their entry.”

“A physical manifestation of your mind palace?” she asked, though that admittedly got a smile out of her. “Well I thought you could express your thoughts a bit better than this.”

“Well that’s just rude. Trust me, I know where everything is, and the so-called mess helps me think.” She pouted just a little, folding her arms. “I have a system.”

“I’ve come across filing systems like that before. They’re not usually as helpful as you would think.” Of course that was more Klaus’ area but the point should still work.

“What’s that thing you always talk about that detective doing? Mind palace, right? This is just a physical manifestation of my mind palace.” She grinned, convinced that she had a good argument.

        Shoulders hunched, eyes narrow, mouth set in a scowl: Lu was doing battle with a pen that, when pressed to paper, alternated between actually writing and doing nothing more than carving a groove into the pulp, thereby turning every attempted sentence into a Rorschach test of blotches. She could grab another pen, but that would be admitting defeat. Instead, she was alternating between shaking it and repeatedly scribbling on a corner of her page to test it. It was in the midst of one of these shaking attacks that she looked up to see an audience to her little showdown with the writing utensil.         ❝Moony my darling,❞ she greeted pleasantly, unembarrassed, ❝would you happen to have a lighter on your person?❞ She would indeed resort to torture if that was the only way to win! (or, at any rate, she wanted to see if a little heat might coax the nearly full ink cartridge to actually flow as it was meant to.)

Bea, on the other hand, had been watching this showdown for the previous couple of minutes with extreme interest - mostly so she wouldn’t have to do her actual work. The French agent was interesting in how she did certain tasks, but using a clearly dead pen over and over again was probably the most confusing thing she’d done. At least, the most confusing thing that Beatrice had seen. She was pretty sure she wasn’t an alien or something strange like that, but there wasn’t any harm in checking. 

“Callie, hi.” She cocked her head, very confused. “I do, but I think what you might need is a different pen. Or maybe a pencil?” She produced both from her pockets, leaving them on the table just in case. “I could open it up and have a look inside if you like. Could be a blockage of some kind?”
