Manaka had been so preoccupied with worry for this stranger that when the snowball hit her shoulder, she was taken completely by surprise. When she had realized what had happened, the other had already came over, asking if she were ok.

The perfect distance for another bundle of snow.

She grinned. “…Take that!” she yelled as ferociously as she could, and grabbed as much snow as she could before throwing it in the girl’s direction, not even bothering to pack it into a snowball like she did.

Fionna froze for a moment, then a smile split across her face. “You got me!” she shouted, laughing. As more snow came her way, Fionna ran off to the side, slipping on some ice as she tried to dodge it. She grabbed snow into her hands, not caring to make any sort of shape with it, it was all about the amount. She charged towards the girl with a battle cry and tackled her into a fluffy mound of snow.

The snow had seeped into her own front as well as the girl, but it only made Fionna giggle. She removed herself from on top of the girl and helped her up.

“Hi,” she smiled.

Hikari watched as Fionna basically scarfed down the cupcake, and reminded himself not to eat cupcakes in front of her for fear of being stolen from - hey, he liked cupcakes too! Just maybe not as much as her.

"Mm, I guess so — they’ve been nice to me and all, so I try my best to give back, yeah?" he explained, polishing off the last of his cookie, wiping the small crumbs off the corner of his mouth with a nearby napkin.

"Ah, well… I can leave — just gotta lock the place up after me. Why’s that?"

Fionna shrugged.

“Dunno. I’m bored. Wanna hang out and do somethin’?” she asked, already trying to think of something they could do together. She had enough money left for a few games at the arcade and the idea appealed to her, so she shot the idea out there. “How about the arcade? I’ll slaughter you in air hockey.” she grinned.

"Who the hell is passed out in the driveway?"

Fionna looks at the driveway. An old man hugging a tattered bear lies at the end of the driveway. His beard is ragged and his clothes are smudged with weeks of crud that he probably couldn’t afford to wash away. His feet are covered with bright purple fuzzy socks with stars on them. Brand new and warm. Fionna smiles at him.

"That’s my homeless friend. I gave him some socks." Fionna kicks at the snow and tosses a grin at Kongou. "He plays the fiddle when he’s not snoring. It’s fluffin’ awesome."

"Why is there a frozen turkey in the bathtub?"

Wiping hair out of her face, Fionna turned, looking distressed.

"What was I supposed to do?! There wasn't any room in the freezer!" She stuck her hands into the tub, making sure the turkey was covered in the ice cubes and ice water she'd dumped inside. She gestured at Azusa.

"Grab some more ice - quick! If this turkey defrosts, Thanksgiving will be ruined!"

"Balloons? Really?"

Fionna grinned proudly even as her body squeaked with the amount of specialty balloons she'd tied around her limbs. She drew her balloon sword and pointed it at Noriaki.

"On guard! Uh, orange butt!"

"Very cute."

"What?!" Fionna choked as her eyes widened at Hikari. "What's very cute?" she asked. "This leaf? This tree? This DOG POOP?!"

"...Me?" she whispered.

"Are you having nightmares again?"

"Yeah.." Fionna sighed. She rubbed at the dark circles under her eyes and yawned loudly. "But it's fine, really. I'll get over it."

"Thanks for asking, Soph."

"Zelda is more important right now."

Fionna looked at the bleeding cut on her knee. It didn't look that deep. She nodded.

"You're absolutely right." she said. "Game time!"

"Wow!!"

Gentle snowflakes slowly floated now from the cloudy sky, and Manaka stood under it, eyes sparkling as she held her hands up to maybe catch one. It was the first time Manaka had seen it snow in Brieve, and she was definitely going to take advantage of it.

But it wasn’t enough! It was so light, it was barely visible, and it was no fun if the first snow was that insignificant! 

An idea struck her suddenly - there was plenty of snow on the ground, so if she threw it up in the air, it would all come falling down really fast because of gravity, right? And then she could see a real snow fall, even if only for a few seconds!

With comfy gloves, she grabbed as much snow as she could, and flung it up into the air. Unfortunately, she forgot to check if anyone was around, and on its way up, the snow hit a nearby person in the face.

"Oh…O-Oh no, I’m so sorry!" she exclaimed, immediately running over and bowing down apologetically. "I didn’t see you there! Here, let me help you wipe it off, okay?"

Snow in the face was definitely not what Fionna expected as she traipsed along the streets, looking for something interesting to do. But she was looking for something interesting, and it's not like this happens everyday.

"Ah, don't worry about it." she said to the girl. Her smile turned devious. "As long as you don't mind this!" Fionna grabbed up a ball of the fluffy snow, packed it into a circle and threw it at the girl. It was terrible aim and got the girl in the shoulder instead of in the face like Fionna had tried.

"Hahaha!" Fionna laughed, running past the girl to stand a few feet away. "Snowball fight!"

The girl was slow to reciprocate and Fionna gave her a sheepish look.

"Uh, are you okay? It wasn't too hard, right?" Fionna came over to brush the snow off the girl's jacket.

"Nice one," he praised, nodding in acknowledgment as he picked up the bill and started ringing up the cupcake. 

"Weelll…" He thought about it for a moment, trying to decide exactly how to say it. "I don’t technically work here, but the owners let me sleep in their back room, and I like to help out sometimes when there’s no one here, so…"

Kaching. “Alright, here’s your change!” He slid a couple bills and coins back across the counter. “Enjoy your cupcake.”

Fionna nabbed the cupcake and her change. She stuffed the extra money in the pocket of her pants with one hand while she held the cupcake with the other. Bakery cupcakes always looked so fancy, especially compared to the usually and dilapidated ones Fionna tries to make on her own when she's craving something sweet and doesn't have the extra cash for bakery fresh goodies.

"That's nice of you," Fionna said around a bite. "Real upstanding, dude." It was gone too quickly. Fionna frowned, then looked up at Hikari.

"So are you working now?" she asked. "Or can you leave?"

game of chance | noriaki & fionna

Whenever Noriaki found himself with spare time to waste, he sometimes found himself spending more of it than he probably should in the city’s most popular arcade. And while regular video games was something he found himself to be rather skilled at, there was always one thing he never quite got the hang of.

Crane machines.

The concept was rather simple. Pick up your prize, and don’t drop it. He’d witnessed children manage the task easily enough, yet whenever he personally tried a hand at snatching up one of those cutesy plushes for himself, it was like the damn things were coated in oil.

For what must have been the fourth time that day, the redhead glared as the machine’s claw dropped his grand prize of absolutely nothing into the chute; his frustration causing his grip on the joystick that controlled the game to increase tenfold.  It wasn’t as if he even wanted the stuffed toys the machine held that badly, but he’d wasted enough coins at this point that it was now a matter of pride and perseverance. His stubborn attitude didn’t help much either.

Hand dipping into his pocket to retrieve more money to waste on the claw game, violet eyes glanced to the side as a young girl approached him, probably waiting for her turn at the thing.

"I wouldn’t get my hopes up if I were you. The damn thing is probably broken."

After school was probably the time of day Fionna should be doing her homework. But with a little extra pocket money, Fionna was way more interested in the arcade than anything else.

She could recognize a few kids from school inside, but she ignored them for the crane machine. On more occasions than Fionna would like to admit to she had fallen prey to the crane machine's tricks. The last time she was in here was a little over a week. She'd lost all five dollars Gina had given her to spend and ended up getting aggressive with the machine.

Today was going to be different.

Maybe.

A man stood in front of the crane machine looking about as frustrated as Fionna was about to become. She nodded at his comment. She moved closer to the machine, face stuck to the window as she peered inside.The game started up again, music taunting as the man moved the crane. Fionna tried not to blink. The crane managed to pick up a small plushie and Fionna squealed in delight as it started returning to the drop spot. But as soon as it came within a few inches, the crane dropped the plushie and Fionna groaned in sympathy.

Attack on Pet Shop | Momoi & Fionna

Fionna was lucky Cake was such a well-behaved and even tempered cat or else carrying her around in her backpack would be a nightmare. But as it is, Cake is an awesome cat and therefore loves to be lugged around in a big green backpack all the time. Or maybe it's because she's lazy. Probably.

Making sure Cake was tight and secure, Fionna pushed into the pet shop's doors and could immediately smell the unique scent of a pet shop. Fionna loved it.

"Looks like they're closing in a few minutes." Fionna muttered to herself. "Better hurry up."

There wasn't much she needed honestly; just some litter and food for Cake. Easy as pie. Gina had told her which kinds to get already. Now all she needed to do was find them. Which wasn't difficult as she wandered into the aisles labeled on the signs. With both the cat food and litter stacked up in her hands, Fionna checked her watch and figured she had a few minutes to look around before they closed. 

She grabbed a cat toy from one of the shelves that dangled a feather and a bell from the end. Cake started getting rowdy in her backpack, reaching forward with swiping paws to attack the toy.

"Cake," Fionna warned. The cat didn't stop and began climbing out of her backpack. "Cake, no!" she shouted as Cake fled her backpack. Fionna dropped the items she was carrying and chased after her insane cat. They made it to the end of aisle when Cake ran between an employee's legs. Fionna looked up a the employee with a sheepish look.

"My cat escaped."

"Thanks," he responded sheepishly, as though that were a compliment — actually, he wasn’t sure. Was she saying he had a good taste or something?

Actually, nevermind. He didn’t want to think about anything like that this early in the morning.

Hikari tapped his fingers on the counter as he waited for her to find her money. He was a little hungry, actually, so while she dug through her backpack, he grabbed a cookie from the display case and took a bite.

"Oh, well.. I kinda work here?"

Fionna pushed the twenty near Hikari's tapping fingers on the counter and waited until one finger rose, and just before it fell to tap, she slipped the twenty beneath it.

"Score." she grinned. She retracted her hands and leaned against the counter. "Kinda work here?" she asked. "Like, part time or somethin'? There was an older girl who worked part time at the orphanage for a while, but I think it was more for graduation credit or something." Fionna shrugged. The girl who'd worked at the orphanage for a while was pretty boring. She only did what she had to do and practically ignored the kid's existence until she left at 4:30, only to reappear the next day, same as always.

Fionna had been so excited, it came to no surprise that she immediately leaped in the moment he pushed open the door. He slowly trailed in behind her, grinning a little at her eagerness - maybe it was contagious.

"Favorite, huh?" Hikari glanced at their cupcake display, checking to see which ones were currently available. "Well.."

He slid behind the counter, opening up the display case from behind, and pointed at the red one, then the one beside it. “Red velvet’s my favorite, but cheesecake comes close.”

"I love red velvet." Fionna agreed. She nodded. "Alright, I'll get red velvet." she smiled at Hikari. "Good choice."

Fionna dug around in her green backpack for the money she'd thrown in there earlier. Gina told her to start carrying a wallet so she wouldn't lose things in her backpack but Fionna figured it was more of a suggestion than a command, so she skipped the old, faded wallet Gina left out on the table for her and just shoved the twenty into her bag.

When she finally located the crumpled twenty, she smoothed it out against her thigh as much as possible and slipped it onto the counter.

"I think next time I'll try cheesecake. I've never had it cupcake style before." Fionna said as she waited for Hikari to give her her cupcake. "So do you work here or something?"
