Very surface level read, but something I love about Ni No Kuni is how, despite being a very whimsical game for kids, it's also ultimately a game about loss, grief, and recovery, and it never shies away from that.
Grief is the inciting incident of the game, and it's the reason Lucien and Cassiopeia become the Dark Djinn and White Witch. Throughout the story, we continue to see characters lose their loved ones, and their hope, and entire kingdoms.
Grief is literally baked into one of the core mechanics through Brokenheartedness. But it's also just as much about recovery and receiving help from others.
It's a very mature theme, and I think Ni No Kuni managed to handle it extremely well given its target audience.
