i'd like to add that the shadow color isnt necessarily dictated entirely by the primary light source, but the bounce light! so for the example of a sunny environment, the reason the shadows are blue are because of the light from the blue sky reflects across the environment; but, if the character were to be under tree cover, the bounce light would be coming from the leaves and thus the shadow would look greener.

James Gurney is an absolute master and gives really good clarity on colour techniques. Yes, it is traditional paint focused, but the principles are the same. Yes it is informed by the environmental colour but as a painting technique it is achieved this way!

I would also suggest that in digital processing, rather than apply a regular colour layer at a mid opacity, try out the different types of layers, Eg. Screen or Multiply. This can give you at least a starting point to help direct your colour palette.

Layer Blend Modes are so so so important to working in digital art. There's a ton of math that goes into figuring out how the layers should blend together, which is why some of the modes you can pick are literally called Multiply, Add, Divide, and Difference (that's subtraction). The graphics software takes the color values of your base and blend layers and runs a calculation to get your resulting layer appearance. The ones that don't have specifically mathematical sounding names are still doing calculations, but they're more complicated (think linear Algebra and higher). Some of them, like dodge and burn, are named for actual photo editing techniques.

While it's not super important to know about the mathematical side of blend modes, I think it's worth knowing at least enough about how each of the categories of blend modes works and why they do what they do; if for no other reason than having a starting point when you start experimenting with them in your work.

I wanna talk about this part of hazbin hotel specifically:

“You fucking creep!”

That is extremely emotionally charged dialogue. Because, sure, Vox is often called manipulative, an asshole, a liar etc. But a “fucking creep”? From Alastor of all characters? That says something about Vox and his behaviour.

Whilst we are given more tame images like Vox taking Alastor on dates that he only seems annoyed with, or their backstory in which Alastor genuinely laughs when Vox tries to imitate him

We also have Alastor being forced into a fucking cuck chair against his will.

(and can i just say that his clothes being specifically thrown all around alastor is really telling about how that scene went down, and it is not pleasant to think about)

We have Vox revealing that Alastor doesn’t have a tail.

But how does Vox know this? Did he confirm it with his bare hands? Because if yes, that is absolutely grounds to call him a fucking creep, especially from Alastor, a character who literally cannot cover up the fact he hates being touched by Vox.

(which you can see in the backstory scene: the radio static/screeching quietly in the background when Vox touches Alastor’s shoulders)

And look here:

I can’t help but see the obvious difference between their expressions. Alastor does smile as always but where Vox looks like he is genuinely enjoying forcing himself into Alastor’s personal space, Alastor looks. Uncomfortable. Hostile. Repulsed, even.

He turns away. He can’t stand it.

We know that he is uncomfortable, but really stop to think about how this goes beyond a character’s touch-aversion.

Vox is genuinely inappropriate towards Alastor, beyond just a sexual interest or obsession he acts like a sex pest which honestly has got to feel horrible from Alastor’s end. Imagine you reject someone (i’ll be it in the most humiliating way possible like jeez Al you couldn’t have let him down gently), and then said person develops a psycho-sexual relationship in his head with you to the point where the moment you are forced to be in proximity with him he straps you to a chair and forces you to watch him have sex and/or touches you and tells an entire population about your body.

I wouldn’t play-down Alastor’s ability to mask discomfort well, he absolutely can and does, but Vox isn’t just in love with Alastor he overtly sexualises him both publicly and psychologically.

So I noticed something very interesting about Vox and his victims.

Everytime Vox killed in his past he completly copied his victims behaviour, talent and even their style. And while he sabotaged some of them, he also manipulated the others to trust him. He pretended to admire them or help them out only to betray and murder them.

And we as the fandom lots of time pointed out how similar Vox behaved and dressed as Alastor:

So my guess is knowing how Vox behaved in life that Alastor might have been his perfect victim type. He already started to take on his style but unlike his other victims Alastor didnt fall for his tricks and saw right through him and he couldnt even hurt him.

Because of these he was never able to get over his obsession and switch to a new person.

I am not saying that in a first time ever Vox didnt genuinely wanted to be partners with Alastor or saw him as his equal but I also think his messed up serial killer brain might also has something to do with wanting to be with Alastor.

And if Alastor knows about Vox past and behaviour it is easy to see why he laughed at him and denied their partnership. He thought he will be Vox next victim. Used and discarded as nothing. He probably couldnt believe that Vox would try to manipulate him too.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like

"Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?

Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters."

There's some scoffing at the value of copywriting, but you have to remember that the ability to advertise is an extremely valuable skill. The ability to convince someone to consider a product with words alone is the same skill you need to pitch your story, make a convincing argument, or craft a compelling narrative. It's a writing skill, like any other.

A few years ago while trying to find ways to commit suicide as painlessly as possible, I came across a PDF of Dr. Paul Quinnett's The Forever Decision. Thinking it might go into actual methods of suicide (I read an article once that actually did that and was trying to find it again) I started to read it, and I think I only got about two pages in before I was crying too much to actually see the words.

I downloaded the PDF to my hard drive and I open it again whenever I'm feeling too suicidal to do much else, but not enough to start booking a ride to the hospital. And every time without fail I only go up to a few pages before backing off and choosing to live another day just because suicide suddenly seems even more unbearable than whatever the hell upset me in the first place.

All the book really does is [I'm pulling a summary from GoodReads here as, again, I've read no more than 5 pages] "discusses the social aspects of suicide, the right to die, anger, loneliness, depression, stress, hopelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, the consequences of a suicide attempt, and how to get help."

But it also starts with the author kindly asking the reader to complete the book before going through with anything, and for some reason I'm compelled to really just try to read it all before finalizing everything. Despite not yet completing it (hopefully never will) I think I can safely say it's saved my life at least a few times now.

It's intentionally legal to copy and redistribute this book to keep it as accessible as possible, and it's very easy to find, but here's a link for it anyways.

Beta claimed Rost didn't 'love' Aloy and Aloy said he did the best he could

Rost did love Aloy. Like he loved his daughter who he lost in the Red Raids. And he raised her as best he could. To be the best she could be.

He raised her to make sure she left him. That she would win the Proving and become part of the Nora. He loved her and never let himself show that softness to her because he knew he would always be Outcast but she would have a chance to live with the tribe. He also knew she wouldn't do it on her own, which is why he planned on leaving the Sacred Lands.

Rost loved her so much even tho she would always. Always leave him, and it would be his proudest moment of her.
