Front Bumpers
From no extension to 24+ inches, bumpers on a fire apparatus come in many sizes. What would you include?
Discharge Hose Troughs/Compartments
I’m sure you have all seen an apparatus with hose stored in the front bumper. I have seen two 1 1/2 inch by 100 foot lines stored as if they were preconnects (across the width of the bumper). I have seen a deep compartment on the driver’s side that stores one 1 1/2 inch by 100 foot line. I have also seen one 1 inch by 100 foot line stored there. (Don’t store 1 inch there unless you have a reel or are planning to pull it out inch by inch.)
These ideas are best suited to departments that respond to brush fires or car fires on interstates and the like.
Intake Hose Troughs/Compartments
I have seen a small section of hard suction with a strainer there. I have seen 25 feet of supply hose stored there.
This depends on hydrants and water source access.
Rescue Tools
Departments that are equipped with rescue tools have started to utilize the front bumper. This includes storing hydraulic reels and hydraulic tools. I have also seen cord reels located there. Occasionally, departments think outside the box and locate everything from sinks to struts there.
Miscellaneous
Many people love the sound of a mechanical siren. Others choose to do nothing with the bumper.
