There was no doubt Klaus was suspicious of the Pyro, but nothing yet confirmed his suspicions. The Demo could have very well gone through respawn by the time Klaus went out to rescue him. But he couldn’t shake knowing he left someone in his office alone.

“I see.” Klaus removed his medipack and medigun, putting them in their respective places. The filing cabinet didn’t look like it had been tampered with, that was a good thing. Nothing was obviously missing, but he’d do a thorough inventory check once the Pyro had left.

But the next problem was: which Pyro was he talking to? Under the mask, they all looked identical and the mask always made their voices muffled. If things were missing which Pyro would be held accountable?

“Is there anything I can do for you now that you’re here?”

Naz watched the Medic put his tools away, taking a few steps closer to look at them. The medigun, with all its attachments and variations, was always an interesting one to inspect. Most Medics didn’t let you get too close, but so Naz kept his distance, but he still looked.

“...Hm? No, I suppose not. I’m pretty healthy, I think.” He put a hand on his chin, giving the image of thought. He should probably ask for something, to reduce suspicion. Plus, he’d only poked through the medication shelf...

“Oh! Actually, while I’m here, can I have a box of band-aids? Sometimes after battles my gloves and flamethrower leave blisters on my hands. I tried putting in an extra layer, like Scout does, but it makes the gloves not fit as well, and then it’s all slippery...” He shook his head. “Anyway, it’d be easier to just put bandages on the spots that rub, but it’d be a pain to come in every day for something so simple, so I figured I could just grab some from you?”

Now that he was closer Eli’s eyes turned just a fraction or two wider at the vision of him, it wasn’t fear, no trace of distrust but sheer awe. She felt child-like in her wonder, lucky to have someone so unique in her life.

Social queues what are those?

“Y-Yeah! Braids, sometimes I’ll throw mine int’a a quick french braid I was taught a while back, they’re super easy once ya get th’a hang of it and it’ll do wonders t’a stop the sweating.”

She let Rick go completely once it was deemed safe, the little creature pressing the top of his head into Naz’ palm, a quiet series of strange-sounding chitters coming from somewhere deep in his throat. “He’sa honey badger, they’re… Well, they’re– I mean…” She pauses for a second or two, frowning into her lap to try and organize her facts.

“He likes t’a fight a lot, we sometimes get int’a it when he’s in’a mood but– I raised him since he got abandoned jus’ a lil’ size of ya palm sort of.” She remembered it fondly, a quiet smile lingering on her face as her cheeks warmed in happiness. “I love him so much, did you know that they can withstand snake venom and other animal bites? Because his skin is so thick.”

Her fingers interlaced together on her lap, her brows upturning a little in embarrassment but her smile was apologetic. “Sorry– Sorry… You have a cat, you said? What’s her name?”

He wasn’t surprised to feel her stares, but the fact that it was with something other than fear was a nice twist. He wasn’t sure quite what it was, though, so he didn’t mention it, pretending not to notice as he watched the strange creature on the floor before him.

“I’d really appreciate the chance to learn, actually. It never occurred to me to seek out the information, really, and I had no reason to learn it from my parents...”

His own face matched hers in awe as the little guy approached, gently and hesitantly petting his head. As Eli spoke he looked back up, quietly taking in information. “Oh, don’t be sorry. It’s really interesting! Honey badger, eh?” His gaze dropped back down to Rick, scratching behind his weird little ears. “Crazy. I guess, thinking about it, if it doesn’t live in a desert somewhere I probably have never seen it before. Well, I mean, also dogs and cats and stuff...”

There was some shuffling, Naz settling onto the floor as he spoke.”Oh, yeah, I have a cat. Her name’s Karima. Though if she could talk, she would probably argue that she is owned by no one, and I’m just a garbage disposal for half-eaten mice.”

“C’mon, I’ve been workin’ far too long in this industry t’a care at this point.” Eli said with a small helpless eye-roll, doing her best to multitask looking after the squirming animal on her lap who was far more interested in attempting to shred apart the Pyro.

He began to cool once a face was revealed, able to see the man’s eyes the badger slowly but surely turned from being restless to observant, his little pumpkin paws climbing up his mother’s back and fastening himself on her shoulder to have the higher ground.

Elliot herself, far beyond her usual way of interacting with men, couldn’t help but be drawn to his features, an expression of wonder and absolute fascination. “I really… Really wanna braid your hair.”

She hadn’t even realized she had said it, but it was the first thing that came out of her mouth that had no control over. That small little voice in the back of her head not allowing that filter to engage, but instead wished to satisfy that sensory stimulation she often craved. His eyes were secondary to her focus, honestly, struggling with eye-contact at the best of times it wasn’t until their unusual pupil had somehow managed to ensnare her in its focus.

A few beats pass before she snaps back to reality, “Sorry–Sorry! Here, Rick, c’mon now.” She reaches back, pulling the honey badger down onto her lap once again and letting him sniff the air furiously between she and Naz, hopping down onto the floor to allow himself to be pet.

Her comment elicited a crooked smile, revealing a sliver of the too-sharp teeth concealed behind his lips. “I might take you up on that,” he said with a chuckle in his voice. “I usually just pull it back in a big ponytail, ‘cause doing anything with it is a pain, but a braid would probably keep it from getting tangled...”

He crouched down in the floor to be closer to the furry creature, offering his hand for it to sniff and decide if he was allowed to touch, like one would a dog. “He’s very cute, and also dressed as a pumpkin. I think if I dressed my cat as a pumpkin she would murder me in my sleep, but she’s not a very nice cat.”

Those yellow eyes studied the animal for a few more moments before looking back up at her. “What is he? I’ve never seen a, uh, whatever he is before. Like a large bitey skunk.”

“You!”

Klaus burst into the room in a sudden rage and pointed accusingly at the Pyro. And…the Pyro in question was exactly where he was last standing. Nothing was obviously missing. There was no mess.

The doctor looked a bit embarrassed for his outburst, but said nothing about that. Instead, he straightened out his tie. “There wasn’t anything outside. No Demo, no injuries,” Klaus said, giving the Pyro a suspicious stare.

--Oh, the Medic was back. At first, Naz was sure he’d been caught, but the anger visibly ebbed to suspicion, and he decided he could probably spin things his way with a few more lies.

“Really?” He cocked his head in faux-surprise, smiling under his mask again. “Maybe I was too slow, and they respawned. Idiots. Sorry for making you run all the way over there for nothing...”

He shook his head and sighed loud enough to be heard through his mask, putting his hands on his hips--above his pockets, so their contents weren’t jostled. “I’ll give ‘em a hard time for it next time I find them, maybe they’ll come by and apologize themselves. I mean, probably not, but it’s nice to hope...”

Klaus ran out to heal those in need. All would gaze upon him in awe and wonder as he selflessly helped his teammates. They would talk about Klaus saving the day just in time over the evening meal and for days to come. The even would go down in legend: Klaus the real doctor saved lives.

When he arrived out into the hot desert sun there was…nothing. No one. No sign of an explosion, no blood, no guts, no dismembered body parts. It was almost as if nothing had happened at all…

Klaus’ blood went cold as he dashed back inside the base. Idiot! He left that Pyro alone in his office! How could he have fallen for something so stupid?

The fridge contained basically what he’d expected--vaccines for the yearly check-ups, some vials of weird stuff that was probably experimental or illegal... And, of course, what he was actually here for. Medics around here didn’t usually keep a ton of blood on hand, but you never know when you might need some. And hopefully he wouldn’t need a ton anyway.

He could probably carry six if he squeezed three into each pocket, but he only took four, just to be safe. If they exploded, this whole visit was a waste. Unfortunately, flipping through the labels showed basically what he expected as well--mostly O-, the universal donor, followed by O+, which was the most common blood type in general. He went ahead and took two of each, pushing the door closed with his foot.

Pockets full, Naz grabbed his mask and started to pull it back on. Everything looked like when the Medic had left, so maybe if he just locked the door behind him, his heist wouldn’t even be noticed.

Rick was a very spoiled animal, her room larger than most other mercenaries because she had had too much trouble in one of the smaller rooms and the badger getting bored. Half of the room was retrofitted into a hive of sorts, runs, and ledges running around the place, separated with a short screen diving to her half. Bed, complete with stolen clothing she’d been sleeping in the night before. Desk with numerous medical study books, and one single wall filled to the brim with polaroids.

“He does yeah sometimes, so move slow with him yeah?” Eli beamed with pride, the little wiggly monster seeing Naz and instantly hissing with teeth bared, halted only when Eli booped him on the nose.

“Rick no, be nice! He’s a friend– I’m sorry, it might be th’a mask, he don’t take too kindly t’a those.”

The badger began to expose his teeth again, soothed from snapping out at the other man only by Eli’s gently fussing fingers through his wiry fur.

Naz would be jealous of her nice room if he cared at all, but his own room was tiny and barely furnished mostly out of apathy. Well, he had a few things for his cat, but she really came and went as she pleased. Besides that, though, he really didn’t need any furniture, or have anyone to take pictures with.

“Oh, yeah. Okay, that’s fair. But some people don’t take too kindly to my face, so, you’ve been warned.” It took a few seconds to tug the mask off his head, releasing a messy halo of white hair, which was long enough to extend down into the neck of his suit. His mouth was set like there was something extra inside it, but the strangest thing about him was the bright yellow iris of his eye, or the slit-like pupils that flicked between Eli and her fuzzy companion.

He took his gloves off, too, revealing wide tan hands, which threw the whole set onto the floor back towards the doorway. “I’m Naseem, by the way,” he said, quieter now that he didn’t have to speak through the mask, “but most people call me Naz.”

Elliot looked up with a massively guilty expression, she was dressing Rick up as a soft baby pumpkin. Rick was her pet honey badger. He was simply laying there and accepting his fate as said baby pumpkin.

“Oh! Oh really? Elliot– Eli, either is fine I uh– This is Rick.”

Naz just stood in her doorway for a few moments, squinting through the lenses of his mask. She had a tiny... very soft, moving pumpkin? He had no idea what kind of animal that was.

“Holy shit, dude.” He dropped his bag off on the first flat surface he passed on his way to walk closer. “Rick is adorable. Can I pet him? Does he bite?”

Klaus hesitated – normally he wouldn’t leave anyone unattended in his office. There were medications anyone could easily snatch up and patients’ files with confidential information.

But Klaus was needed. Actually needed for an actual medical emergency. People were relying on him and only him to save the day! Think of how thankful everyone would be! They’d finally regard him as a real doctor!

“I’ll be back shortly,” he said, before dashing out of his office.

His hesitation was obvious, but when the Medic eventually decided to leave, he grinned widely under his mask. He gave the doctor a thumbs up and a nod, watching him go.

Once he was definitely gone, Naz pulled off his mask and got to work. He sniffed the air, letting his senses lead him to the doctor’s supply fridge. He rifled in his overlarge pockets for the pair of pliers he’d brought--to dispatch any padlocks he ran into--but found that the cabinets were actually left unlocked.

Either this Medic was overly trusting, or the guy never left his infirmary. Either way, Naz was in luck. He plucked a bottle of painkillers, one of tranquilizers and one of sleeping medication from the dry shelf before popping open the fridge for his main goal.

Klaus was ready to use the medigun’s healing powers to reattach Demo’s leg. “Show me where they are,” he replied, giving Naz an expectant look. Being the good Samaritan he was, Naz would obviously lead Klaus straight to Demo and Scout.

“I mean--you’re faster than me. And I ran all the way here. I’ll just... slow you down.” He bent forward a bit, hands on his knees. “You can’t miss ‘em. I’ll just... lock up behind you, you know, so nobody messes with your stuff, and then I’ll catch up to help. No worries.”

Klaus immediately stood up when the Pyro entered. “Did you see what happened?” he asked, springing into action by pulling out his medipack with attached medigun. It wasn’t something he liked using during a ceasefire, but he doubted he could reattach Demo’s leg on his own.

His hand went to the back of his neck, and he shifted from one foot to the other. “I didn’t see exactly what it was, but he was fuckin’ around with Scout and his grenades, and some people were egging them on, so... probably something stupid.” He moved farther into the Medbay to make room by the door for the Medic to leave.

“They’re outside, on the other side of the base,” he lied, with a gesture towards the farthest point away. Hopefully that would keep the Medic gone long enough to find where he kept the good shit in here.

Dot shrugged. “It was a simple job, yes, but it paid for my apartment,” she replied. And she could eavesdrop on private meetings. No one seemed to realise the secretary was perfectly capable of listening in on big corporate secrets.

“Sexy phone operator?” She shorted. “I can’t see myself plugging in wires all day. Oh, but I did do some modelling in my younger years. Maybe I could find you a sexy phone operator picture. I should have my old prints with me.”

“I guess that’s fair. You seem smarter than the average secretary, but I suppose a job’s just a job...” It was a pretty normal girl-job. Maybe there’s something that attracts women to phones.

There was a joke there about her plugging in something, but it felt a little crude for the moment, and Naz was easily distracted by the mention of modelling. “You were a model?” He put a knuckle to his chin thoughtfully. “I can see that. You could probably still be a model, if you turned to the side. Though honestly I think the mask is kind of cool.” He gave a little smirk, sharp and sharklike. “Though I won’t say no to seein’ pictures.”
