“Did you now?” she said, giving him a look of surprise before she shrugged her shoulders, confirming his answer. “You are not wrong, I tend to take more of defensive than offense during my campaign.”
“If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be able to stabilized the Earth Kingdom within three years. I would be dead instead,” she sputtered out, turning her head to the side. “Which doesn’t sound too bad right now, it would have saved a lot of trouble and the pain I caused.” She mumbled out, glancing at his arm from the corner of her eye.
“I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize,” he assured her. “I would have been willing to sacrifice a lot more to help Korra take down your machine. Some scars are nothing to me.”
There was a pause before Mako began to speak again. “There’s a lot about you I shouldn’t forgive,” he said. “You imprisoned my brother, destroyed huge parts of my home, and tried to kill my best friend. If it wasn’t for Korra, I’d probably hate you. But she thinks there’s good in you. I trust her enough to try and see that too.”

“She said I looked lonely and ‘could use a bit of stress relief.’ So she set me up with one of the new transfers from Yu Dao.”
Mako scowled at his brother’s obvious amusement. “I knew asking you was a bad idea. Maybe Korra and Asami can help.”

“It’s- you know, work has been pretty hectic. Crime. Lot of crime. I, uh, need to stay on top of it. For work.”

The former Equalist leader locked up when he heard the voice, jerked from his self-pity. That boy. Noatak lowered his head just a little, jerking the touched shoulder back to say that he didn’t want the other touching him. He couldn’ speak, not unless he wanted to get thrown in a cell. Might as well play mute.
For once the man was actually rather happy for having the scars he did from that explosion almost a year or so ago. It make him rather unrecognizable.
Mako couldn’t shake the feeling that he somehow knew this man, but he tried to put it out of mind. What was important was getting him help.
“Can you walk?” Mako asked, pulling his hand away.

Baatar shrugged. “After the spirit vine thing, I could use a strong one,” he said. “Lead the way.”
A dive bar on Ursa Street was Mako’s preferred getaway when in need of inebriation. Owned by a one-eyed bruiser with a cleft chin whose name was Happy Honda (and spirits help you if you called him anything other than Happy Honda), there was no better place, in Mako’s view, to get utterly hammered.
Mako ordered a glass of whiskey and pulled it back, gasping slightly as he swallowed. “Good stuff today, Happy Honda,” he complimented the owner.
He glanced over at Baatar. “Drink up,” he said. “Happy Honda’s is the perfect place to unload anything you have on your mind.”
❝Okay, hang on. Wait– You wanna run that by me again..?❞
“I said, Chief Beifong set me up on a blind date, and I want you and Opal to come along so things aren’t so... awkward.”
“Ah yes, Mako,” she said, nodding her head. “Bolin has talked about you several times…” She trailed off, flipping through the pages of the book for a moment before she snapped it shut, setting it to the side.
“Indeed, which is why I took some of her tactics to my own during my campaign,” she commented, setting the book to the side and stood up from the floor, copying her moves when she straightened herself and placed her hands behind her back. “Even to this day, the Earth Empi–Kingdom are still taking up her strategies to their own.”
“Dividing the enemy with feints before striking through the middle, right?” Mako asked. “ I studied reports about your strategies while I was recovering from the injuries I received during the battle for the city.”
Mako grimaced slightly and clutched his right arm as he remembered the electricity surging through him and scarring him forever. “You were a fantastic tactician. Even I can see that.”

The man curled in on himself. He felt so broken. Noatak hardly even noticed that a person was approaching him.
The man seemed familiar somehow, in a way Mako couldn’t quite place. Still, he was clearly hurt, and it didn’t particularly matter to Mako who a person was if they were in need.
He knelt down and placed a hand on the man’s shoulder. “It’s alright, sir,” he said. “I’m a police officer. I can get you the help you need.”
