"Hey, Tikaani, can I talk to you for a minute?" Hiro asked, walking over to his friend.
âEr, yes, of course. What is it?â
"Tik! Nu!" Koichi exclaimed happily from where he was held in his mother's arms, waving his hands cheerfully at Tikaani and Nuka as though trying to call them over.
âHey buddy!âÂ
Nuka came over and bent over to be more eye level with the boy. Beside him, his sister gently ruffled his hair.
âWow, heâs gotten big,â said Nuka. âI just noticed.â
fireferretbabies:
Though Tikaani wasnât one for a lot of smiling, she did smile a little at Koichi and reached out to smoothen his hair. She couldnât help but wonder what a boy like this had business having the father he did.Â
âAre you ready for him to start walking?â she asked. âThatâs probably going to involve a lot more chasing.â
âIâm really looking forward to it, actuallyâ Lian replied. âBesides, Iâve been chasing him ever since he really got the hand of crawling, and Iâve never had any trouble before. I donât think Iâm going to have any problems when he starts walking.â
âIf heâs anything like you then heâs probably going to have as much energy,â said Nuka. âGood mom match. Mine was kind of the same way with me I think. I kind of was curious about everything and wanted to touch everything. Mom humored me. Koichiâs probably going to be getting there a lot more once he gets on his feet. Right, kiddo?â
Nuka poked him in the tummy gingerly.
Koichi beamed as the two of them came over, letting out a delighted sound as Tikaani ruffled his hair.Â
âWell, he is going to be one soonâ Lian replied, smiling slightly as her son reached over and tried to grab Nukaâs nose once it was within his reach. âBut, you are right. Heâs definitely getting big.â
She gently pulled Koichiâs hand away from the young manâs face (mostly because she knew if he got a hold of Nukaâs nose, trying to make him let go would result it plenty of crying, and she wanted to avoid that if at all possible), and adjusted her hold on him.Â
âI think heâs going to be walking before longâ she added, looking at the little boy proudly and receiving a smile in return.
Though Tikaani wasnât one for a lot of smiling, she did smile a little at Koichi and reached out to smoothen his hair. She couldnât help but wonder what a boy like this had business having the father he did.Â

âItâs all I ask,â she said. âOne more thing. Youâre going to have to talk to Dusty about you and that baby. He canât go around pecking people over it if you decide to let someone else hold the baby.â
âIâm sure heâll be fine.  But, Iâll talk to him about it when I feed him laterâ Lian agreed, nodding slightly. âI mean, Iâve already talked to him a bit about the babyâŠBut I guess it wouldnât hurt to make sure he knows whatâs going to happen, consideringâŠâÂ
Her voice trailed off then as she lightly placed her hand on her stomach, looking slightly worried. While she had tried not to think about it to much, her own words reminded her that she likely didnât have long before her baby was born.
âDonât think about the fear so much,â she said. âThink about the end result.â
Battle Starters
"To your left!"
"Be careful, ____!"
"You're just as reckless as ever, huh?"
"They got me pretty bad in my side..."
"You're limping. You should sit this one out."
"I can fight!"
"We'll do it together."
"There are too many of them!"
"I can take them on my own. You'll only get in my way."
"See you on the other side?"
"I'll take the ones on the left...?"
"Behind you!"
"You almost died back there!"
"Quick, hop on!"
"I'm going to need your help. Are you with me or not?"
"We need to work together!"
"Fall back!"
"We have no choice. We have to retreat."
"__[insert attack name]___"
"Just like old times, huh?"
"Wanna brawl? Just you and me?"
"I challenge you!"
"Fire!"
"____? ____, where are you?!"
"You better not do anything stupid."
"Don't die."
âThatâs pride talking,â she said. âI know that youâve been through a lot, but be practical. Iâm not saying youâre going to need major favors every day. But little things. I have no doubt in my mind that youâre going to be a good mother, but donât get so caught up in that that you forget the bigger picture. Point is, you should surround yourself with as much love as possible. Take it from me.â
At this, Lian smiled, just a little. ââŠI guess a little help every day wouldnât be  that badâŠat least for a whileâ she admitted, more to herself than to Tikaani,  with a bit of a shrug. âAnd donât worry, I can definitely do that.â
âItâs all I ask,â she said. âOne more thing. Youâre going to have to talk to Dusty about you and that baby. He canât go around pecking people over it if you decide to let someone else hold the baby.â
Tikaani sighed.
âLian, youâre still not getting the big picture. Do you have any idea how much babies cry? How much attention they constantly need? How many times in the night youâre not going to go to sleep, but just stay up because you know youâre baby is going to cry in probably another hour or so? How many times they need to eat? How easy it is for a fever to be fatal? You do not understand the fact that accidents happen to mothers and their babies who donât ask for help. I worry about the fact that youâre too stubborn to know when to go âokay, I need to get someoneâ. The fact of the matter is that youâre still thinking that not having to ask for help somehow proves something: like youâre a good mother. Iâm sure youâre going to be. I have no doubts about that, but Iâm pretty sure thatâs consuming the forefront of your mind right now.â
For a few moments, Lian looked away in silence, seeming to mull over what Tikaani had just said to her. Finally, she sighed and turned to look at her friend.
âI know all that, Tikaani. I know Iâm going to need to get some help sometimes, even if I donât always want to.â she said, sounding less than enthusiastic. âButâŠI need to prove that I can be a good mom. And Iâd think that would mean being able to go a day without absolutely needing someone to take care of my baby for me. Sometimes? Thatâs fine. But not every single day.â
âThatâs pride talking,â she said. âI know that youâve been through a lot, but be practical. Iâm not saying youâre going to need major favors every day. But little things. Point is, you should surround yourself with as much love as possible. Take it from me.â
âI donât think I have to tell you that itâs not about you anymore,â she said. âWhat you want doesnât really matter as much as it used to. And no, I donât think youâre crazy or stupid. I think youâre having a hard time facing the fact that youâll be reaching out for help every day. Nobody will think lesser of you for it, yet, you act as if you have something to prove.âÂ
âEvery day? Making a lot of assumption there, Tikaaniâ Lian said, sounding quite annoyed by what her friend said. As far as she was concerned, the statement did nothing but imply a lack of confidence in her abilities, and that didnât do anything for her mood. âYou really think Iâm gonna need someone to help me with my baby every single day? I was figuring just once in a while.â
I have no doubts about that, but Iâm pretty sure thatâs consuming the forefront of your mind right now.â
âI know that, but I also know you. Donât be stubborn when people offer help. If theyâre offering help then theyâre probably seeing somebody about you that you donât see yourself. Also understand that if you exhaust yourself then you also are risking your baby as well. What happens if youâre so tired that while youâre holding them you accidentally let them slip in your arms? Iâm using worst case scenarios, but do you see my point?â
Tikaani turned toward her after a moment.
âI donât want to drag up old news, but you know that youâre a single mom. Itâs hard and prolonged stress on a young body can really age it. Weâre only asking you not to be stubborn.â
Lian scoffed softly and rolled her eyes. âIâm not gonna drop my baby, Tikaaniâ she responded, still sounding somewhat irritated by the lecture. âDo you really think Iâm that stubborn or stupid?â Her expression briefly changed from irritation to hurt as she added, âOr crazy?â
She knew that Tikaani had only referred to her stubbornness directly, but she couldnât help but worry that the older girl was concerned about otherâŠaspects of her personality as well.Â
âAnd, yeah, I know being a single mom isnât gonna be easy. Doesnât mean I canât handle itâ She pointed out. She then sighed and continued, almost reluctantly. âBut, okay, I can try and not be stubborn and let my family help with the babyâŠSometimes.â
âI donât think I have to tell you that itâs not about you anymore,â she said. âWhat you want doesnât really matter as much as it used to. And no, I donât think youâre crazy or stupid. I think youâre having a hard time facing the fact that youâll be reaching out for help every day. Nobody will think lesser of you for it, yet, you act as if you have something to prove.âÂ
âIâm going to sound harsh, so forgive me. I wouldnât be saying this if I didnât think you didnât need to hear it, but here is this elephant-bear in the room: youâre sixteen. A grown woman that would make more sense, yes, but the fact of the matter is that youâre case is somewhat special because of how young you are. Youâre barely a woman,â she said bluntly. âItâs not a matter of you wanting help or not. Youâre going to need it. Lian youâre not even old enough to buy everything at the store let alone raise a child as independently as youâd like. For your babyâs sake, you are going to have to swallow that sore pill and realize that youâre going to need a lot of help even if you donât want to ask for it.  One day you will need less help, but not right nowâ
In response, Lian nodded, albeit somewhat reluctantly. She may have been stubborn, but she wasnât insane enough to think that she could literally do everything on her own. But she still didnât like to admit it.
âYeah, I know all thatâ she said, unable to keep herself from sounding just a little irritated by what Tikaani was saying. She knew the words were all the truth, but that didnât make her appreciate them any more. âAnd I will let people help me with the babyâŠbut only when I have to. Otherwise, Iâm going to be the one taking care of them.â
âI know that, but I also know you. Donât be stubborn when people offer help. If theyâre offering help then theyâre probably seeing somebody about you that you donât see yourself. âSo is every to-be mom. If youâre afraid of messing things up then it means that youâll work extra hard at not,â she said. âDoes it always work? No, of course not, but you love your baby and that matters. Lian, youâre not going to necessarily raise this baby alone.â
ââŠIf youâre talking about my family, I know they said theyâll help me, and you know Iâm grateful for thatâŠBut I canât just ask for help with everything; theyâve got their own lives, and I was the one who decided I wanted to raise the baby, so I really donât want to bother them unless I really have toâ she explained.Â
Her family, especially her parents, had made it pretty clear that they would do whatever they could to help her with raising her baby when it was born. She had to admit, her feelings were very mixed. On the one hand, she was relieved that someone was offering help, so she wouldnât have to deal with all of the challenges without support. On the other hand, she didnât want to have to ask for help; she felt that her child should be her responsibility, and not anyone elseâs.Â
âIâm going to sound harsh, so forgive me. I wouldnât be saying this if I didnât think you didnât need to hear it, but here is this elephant-bear in the room: youâre sixteen. "Well, for one, I doubt the kid is actually mine, no matter what she says. Considering she was pretty eager to get in the sack with me when I told her I had protection, I wouldn't be surprised if she'd pulled that same trick with like half the city. And, if it's not my kid, how is it my fault for her getting herself in this mess?" he questioned angrily.
âAnd if it is your child? What then?â she asked. âYou stating that the child might not be yours is just a crutch to absolve yourself of blame. Has it occurred to you that she simply cared about you enough and wanted to be closer to you?â
Why was she suddenly having this drawn out conversation with this absolute moron? She didnât really know, but something about the way he was talking about his situation was familiar.
Nashi shrugged his shoulders. "No, I didn't" he said simply. "Didn't have the time to waste to go and get anything like that. But, like I said, she's the one who was too stupid to not realize I didn't have anything. And yet people blame me for her getting herself saddled with a kid?" He paused and scratched his ear as he added, "Probably not even my kid, so that makes the whole thing even stupider."
Tikaani stopped looking at this idiot and was absently inspecting her nails.
âYou didnât use protection and somehow are absolved from blame when your sperm that you put in her got her pregnant. Unless she forced you to ejaculate in her -- and that would constitute as rape -- then I donât see how you donât have a hand in it. The logic is severely lacking,â she saidÂ
âThatâs inevitable. And considering all the dangerous stunts youâve pulled over the years itâs also the least of your worries. Iâve obviously havenât had a child yet, but youâll find the pain worth it and relevant. You will be fine,â she said. âThe real challenge is after the birth. But fear is a good thing. It means youâre paying attention.â
Lian frowned slightly at Tikaaniâs words, unconciously placing her hand on her stomach. ââŠThatâs what Iâm really worried aboutâ she admitted, still looking over at the older girl. âItâsâŠscary, to think that Iâm going to have to actually be a mom, and raise a baby. Iâm worried Iâm going to manage to mess it up somehow.â
âSo is every to-be mom. If youâre afraid of messing things up then it means that youâll work extra hard at not,â she said. âDoes it always work? No, of course not, but you love your baby and that matters. Lian, youâre not going to necessarily raise this baby alone.â
Nashi stalked over to Tikaani. "Hey, you're the daughter of the police chief, right?" he asked. "Can you tell me why your dad is such an idiot? My ex's nutso boyfriend gets away with beating the crap outta me, and then her family tries to have ME arrested, and they almost get away with it? All because she was too stupid to realize I didn't actually have protection?"
On a normal basis, Tikaani would have been irritated at the fact that random people had this idea that just because she was the police chiefâs daughter it meant she could, or rather, would pull strings for them in terms of the law. However, she actually raised an eyebrow and shot the young man an cold stare.
âAnd you didnât?â she asked. âYou imply that you made her believe you did.â
fireferretbabies:
âOf course not. Childbirth is frightening for most women,â said Tikaani frankly, but gently. She open her eyes and undid herself from the lotus position. âWhat are you worried about?â
It was better than her keeping it inside.
âYou mean, besides the fact that it might hurt even more than I already know it will?â she replied, letting out a tired sigh. Of course she had never actually experienced labor herself, but from what she had heard from those who had, it was not something she was looking forward to.Â
âThatâs inevitable. And considering all the dangerous stunts youâve pulled over the years itâs also the least of your worries. Iâve obviously havenât had a child yet, but youâll find the pain worth it and relevant. You will be fine,â she said. âThe real challenge is after the birth. But fear is a good thing.
