We followed side-by-side down the river until the sun began to set in the horizon. I sat on the deck of the boat facing the river with my legs crossed and my eyes closed as I breathed in the stillness of the air around us.
“Shouldn’t we search the woods?” The pirate captain asked impatiently as he and Zuko scanned the banks on either side of the boats.
“They stole a waterbending scroll, right?” Zuko asked as he continued his scanning of the sides of the river. “They’ll be by the water.” The captain just huffed in response as we continued our path down the river until the sun dipped below the horizon and the stars greeted us from above. None of us spoke as we listened to the quiet movement of the boats in the water, but a sudden splashing sound accompanied by a female voice caused all of us to share a look. Zuko nodded and we landed on the nearby embankment then the two crews made their way towards the sound of the splashing. I stayed behind with the pirate's captain by the boats as I couldn’t clearly see what was happening on the other side of the bushes.
“I’ll save you from the pirates.” I heard Zuko say moments before some fire nation soldiers brought the familiar looking waterbender over to the clearing. I pitied the girl as she was tied to a tree by fire nation guards before I was roughly grabbed and brought over to stand with the captain and Zuko as both groups looked at each other. Zuko watched the captain as he approached with me being dragged from beside him.
“Tell me where the Avatar is and I won’t hurt you or your brother.” Zuko stood in front of the other girl with his hands clenched behind his back as a few fire nation guards stood behind him. I felt bad for the younger girl as she told Zuko to jump off a cliff. Zuko took a deep, calming breath as he walked towards the Waterbender.
“Try to understand,” He said as he stopped near the tree. “I need to capture him to restore something I’ve lost--” Zuko walked around the tree as he continued. “--my honor. Perhaps I can restore something you’ve lost in return.” I didn’t like the sour twist in my stomach as Zuko held up the necklace in front of the lady’s neck, and I suddenly found myself uncomfortable with how close Zuko actually was to her.
“My mother’s necklace!” The lady tied to the tree gasped as Zuko playfully taunted the girl as he walked away with the necklace. “How did you get that?”
“I didn’t steal it.” Zuko said as he tucked it back into his pocket. “In case you are wondering.” The captain beside me began to grow impatient as the exchange seemed to be taking too long for him.
“Enough nonsense!” The captain yelled as a sword was brought to my throat. “The scroll! Now!” A slight sting began where the cold metal of the sword dug into the skin on my neck just a bit.
“I wonder how much this is worth.” Zuko said as he produced a light blue scroll tube from behind his back and lit a fireball in his hand under it. The pirates around me let out an audible gasp as the blade touching my neck backed away a bit. “Seem to be a lot. Here’s the deal--I’ll give this to you after you help me find what I want.” The pirate captain grumbled as he roughly pulled me towards him and pointed a sword towards my throat before he ordered his men to search the woods and meet back here while eyeing the Prince with disdain.
Hours later and the sun is beginning to rise again on the horizon as several of the pirates arrive with the Airbender and the Waterbender’s brother. Zuko’s smile was victorious as his eyes landed on the Avatar bound by rope. Both Zuko and the captain began to approach each other as I looked between the bald kid and the girl tied to the tree.
“I’m sorry, Aang.” The girl said as she looked away from the airbender. “This is my fault.”
Aang. I thought in the moment. So, that’s the Avatar’s name.
“No, Katara, it isn’t.” Aang said to Katara, who was the waterbender tied to the tree. As I looked towards the bald teenager, I found that the older boy--Katara’s brother--was struggling against the rope bindings around his wrists when a bad feeling came over me. The captain roughly grabbed me as he stood closer to Aang while Zuko approached and demanded the Avatar be handed to him.
“Give me the scroll and you can have them both.” The captain grinned as he stared the Firebender down.
“You’re really just going to hand over the Avatar,” The third voice belonged to Katara’s brother, and he drew everyone’s attention as he casually shrugged. “For a piece of parchment paper?” I paled as I realized what the man from the Water Tribe village was doing before Zuko begged the pirates not to listen to their captive.
“I bet you’d get a pretty penny for him on the black market.” The man in the blue robes said as he looked at the Avatar.
“Shut your mouth, Water Tribe peasant.” My eyes narrowed at Zuko’s word choice as his eyes begged the Water Tribe man to shut up.
“Yeah, Sokka--” Now, I knew the whole team’s names. “You really should shut your mouth.”
“I’d be willing to bet the Fire Lord would pay a pretty penny for this guy right here.” Sokka motioned to Aang, who physically paled as the pirates’ faces lit up. “He might pay a pretty penny for the cute waterbender too.” Sokka threw a wink my way, and I felt my cheeks begin to blush at Sokka’s words.
That statement couldn’t be farther from the truth.
The Water Tribe boy’s plan worked as the pirate’s captain turned to look at Zuko with a shit-eating grin on his face.
“Keep the scroll. We got the boy and the girl to pay a hundred times what that scroll is worth.” Zuko’s eyes narrowed dangerously as he stared down the captain as he spoke. I could see the tension building from the Firebenders as I mentally prepared myself for all hell to break loose.
“You’ll regret breaking a deal with me.” Zuko barely finished his sentence before the prince and the Firebenders behind him let off fire blasts towards the pirates. Ducking out of harm’s way, I jumped into the nearby bush as one of the pirates ran towards the firebenders and threw three small balls. As the balls collided with the ground, smoke erupted from the spheres and began to coat the air with a thick cloud of gray smoke. All hell broke loose as the fire nation soldiers and pirates began an all-out war, and the pirates dropped more smoke bombs before dragging the soldiers to fight in the cloud. I quickly lost sight of Zuko, Aang, and Sokka as the cloud of smoke and loud shouts overtook the small clearing.
Coughing as I backed away from the smoke cloud, I bumped right into Katara as she ran away from the tree she had been tied to. Her brown eyes met mine, but the sound of Zuko stumbling out of the nearby smoke cloud drew my attention. I didn’t have time to tell Zuko the captain as the firebender ducked backwards from the thin rapier coming his way. I saw Katara take off towards the boats, and I was about to turn to follow her when the sounds of fire blasting through the air drew my attention. Zuko’s wrist was up in order to block the rapier coming towards his head.
Sparks flew from the impact of the metals colliding. Instinctually, I moved towards the fight as Zuko angrily let out huge blasts of fire as he swung around and captured the wrist of the hand holding the rapier. I let out a water whip to hit the pirate behind the duo as he whipped the scroll Zuko had tucked into his belt. This distracted Zuko enough for the pirate to break his hands free before reengaging Zuko in the fight.
I quickly realized that the surrounding area grew awfully quiet as my ears picked up on the sound of waves nearby. Looking towards the direction of the sound, I found the pirate’s ship was brought off shore with the Avatar and his gang steering the ship. With wide eyes, I turned to tell Zuko about what I saw, but I watched him shoot a blast of fire before the pirate ducked to the side and behind Zuko. The captain yanked Zuko’s ponytail hard before Iroh pushed the two men apart.
“Are you too busy fighting,” Iroh yelled as he pointed a finger in the captain’s face. “To see your ship has set sail?”
“There’s no time for proverbs, Uncle.”
“It’s not a proverb!” I yelled and pointed at the sailing pirate boat as it sailed away. “They are leaving on the boat!”
“Fiddlesticks!” The pirate captain exclaimed as he realized his ship was sailing away. Zuko began to belly laugh at the pirate’s situation while my face paled as I realized there were no other pirates as the captain ran down the bank after his ship. Zuko’s laughter stopped as the pirate’s crew waved at us from a Fire Nation ship.
“Hey!” Zuko pointed at the Fire Nation boat. “That’s my boat!” He yelled before he started running after the boat. I fought the urge to roll my eyes as I followed behind Zuko, and Iroh followed not far behind me. We followed the boats until they fell over the waterfall at the edge of the cliff. Zuko ran to the edge of the cliff as the boats sank into the water below.
Zuko whined about the boat as he looked at the wreckage beyond the cliff while I paled at the thought of walking all the way back to the port. Iroh was breathing heavily as he recovered from running. Iroh’s pants turned into a chuckle as he put his hands in the sleeves of his robes.
“Prince Zuko,” Iroh started between his chuckles. “You’re going to find this hilarious.” I felt my heart sink to my stomach as Iroh produced a lotus pai sho tile from the inside of his sleeve. “The tile was up my sleeve the whole time!” Iroh laughed and smiled widely at his nephew, who growled before he grabbed the lotus tile from his uncle’s hand and threw it into the river below the cliff.
“Fantastic.” I let out exasperatedly with a flick of my hands. “We all had something happen today: Iroh lost his lotus tile; Zuko lost his boat—“ I had started walking back towards the port. “--And I was held hostage by pirates.”
“You were also mistaken for the other waterbender.” Zuko’s voice was monotone as he spoke as he started walking behind me. I tried to ignore the slight pang in my heart as the organ tried to determine what he meant by that. “Maybe you should start wearing Fire Nation colors more often?” My cheeks slightly burned as I looked at Zuko over my shoulder and I saw his cheeks were slightly red too.
“I’ll think about that suggestion.” I said as I threw the Prince a wink. “Now, come on, we don’t want the Avatar to get too far ahead of us.”

A few weeks later, Zuko and I were in the middle of a training session when the sudden turning of the ship threw Zuko and I onto the ground with a loud thud. Zuko let out a soft groan as his body cushioned my landing. Both of our cheeks turned red at how close our faces were before we both scrambled to stand up. Zuko avoided looking at me as he stormed off towards the captain’s cabin as he complained about no one ordering a change of course. Quickly following behind him, I followed him into the steering room where Iroh sat at a pai sho game table. The gentleman all looked at the checkered boxes on the table and moved circular wooden tiles with painted symbols around to various spots.
“No one told you to change course.” Zuko angrily said to the captain as he approached.
“Actually,” Iroh said as he studied the tiles on the table in front of him. “Someone did.” I casually leaned against the wall by the door as Zuko turned around to look at his older uncle. “I can assure you that it is a matter of importance.”
“There’s news of the Avatar?” Zuko’s question sounded hopeful as Iroh stroked the beard on his chin while he pondered his next move.
“I fear it is even more urgent than that.” I felt my own eyebrow raise at the older firebender’s statement as Iroh looked to the Prince. “You see--” Iroh sighed heavily as he clicked his tongue against the back of his teeth. “I’ve lost my lotus tile.” I let out a chuckle as Iroh slide a tile across the board and Zuko looked deflated.
“Lotus tile?” He asked and Iroh nodded towards the game on the table.
“Everyone underestimates the power of the lotus tile in pai sho because they often deem it insignificant.” Iroh slide another tile on the board as he spoke. “However, it is essential for the unusual strategy I use.”
“So, let me get this straight,” Zuko started in a calm manner, “You changed our course…” The fire prince took a deep breath before he continued. “For a stupid lotus tile?” I laughed at the exchange between the two firebenders before I smiled at Zuko’s angry stance.
“A ten minute trip to the merchant stalls won’t harm anything. Who knows, maybe there will be some news of the Avatar.” I shrugged as Zuko let out a breath of fire towards the ceiling, and Iroh laughed.
“I’m glad someone appreciates the value of the lotus tile.” Iroh threw a wink my way as I lightly chuckled at Zuko.
“Lucky are you, Iroh, to have such a compassionate nephew.” I threw a wink towards Zuko before I left the room as Zuko’s cheeks turned red and Iroh belly laughed with the men around the table.
Zuko begrudgingly accompanied Iroh and I as we arrived at the port to browse the merchant stalls. I slipped away from the Firebenders as Iroh gushed over some musical instruments at one of the stands. Iroh had given me some money to buy whatever my heart desired, and I was on a mission for a couple of things: sea prawn dumpling soup ingredients and art supplies. I easily and quickly moved through the stalls and admired some of the unique items the merchant city had to offer.
Although Zuko may not see the joy in the situation, I was thoroughly enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of the world I wouldn’t have been able to experience otherwise without the circumstances of Zuko’s banishment. As I browsed the various shops, I noticed a necklace haphazardly tossed to the side of one of the shops. I gingerly picked it up as the blue ribbon told me it belonged to a waterbender.
I thought back to the girl from a Water Tribe that was traveling with the Avatar, and I tucked it into my front pouch to show Zuko when I caught up with him. Five minutes later, I was curiously looking at a new dress when rough hands grabbed me and interrupted my browsing. Something sharp poking into my side stopped any protest I was about to make.
“Thought you could get away with stealing from me?” A rough voice said as the sharp object poked more into my side. “Any word from you and I’ll gut you right here.” The male voice growled in my ear as rough hands grabbed my wrists and began guiding me away from the stall and towards an interesting looking building nearby. I was roughly shoved through the door where the occupants all turned to look at us as I was roughly held by my bicep..
“I caught the thief.” The voice of the man holding me said as he shoved me towards one of the other men in the building. “Came back for her necklace.” I fell to my knees in front of the man with the brimmed hat. The braid I had worked diligently to put in my hair was roughly gripped by the man in front of me as he used it to slightly lift me up.
“Tell me what you and that bald headed thief did with my scroll.” He growled as he tightened his grip on my braid. I bit back the yelp of pain that threatened to come from my lips.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I hissed out the honest words, but the grip in my hair tightened to force my head slightly to the right.
“Did the bald kid have arrow tattoos?” I recognized Zuko’s voice as the grip on my hair tightened some more and I couldn’t hide the wince of pain from my face.
“And if he did?” The older man spat as he lifted me higher to get a better look at me. “That kid and those two waterbenders stole my scroll, and I want it back.” He growled as I yelped from the uncomfortable vice the man had on my braid.
“She’s not the Waterbender that was with the kid.” Zuko growled with clenched fists. “We are after the kid with the arrow tattoos. I think we can help each other here.”
“That doesn’t explain why—“ I was brought to look this man in his eyes. “—she’s got the necklace of the Waterbender.”
“I—“ I cleared my voice to try and make the words come out evenly. “I found it. I thought it looked familiar.” The huff the man let out smelt horrible to my nostrils as the man suddenly let my hair got and I fell harshly to the ground at his feet.
“They stole a scroll from us that we want back.” The man turned his attention to the firebender with clenched fists standing nearby. “We get the scroll and you can have the other three.”
“We just want the bald one.” Zuko growled as I stood up and brushed myself off. A rough hand wrapped tightly around my wrist to prevent me from walking away.
“You’re not going anywhere.” The man growled as he pulled me to stand next to him. “Once we have the scroll, you can have her back.” My eyes widened slightly as I looked at Zuko’s steady amber eyes as he coldly stared at the pirate’s hand tightly holding my wrist.
“I’m going to need the necklace.” Zuko’s tone was even as he flickered his eyes to briefly look at me, but I couldn’t quite read the emotion his golden orbs had as they looked at me.
“It’s in the front pouch.” I said and the firebender nodded as he approached then opened the pouch and gently grabbed the necklace. I didn’t say anything as he gave me a small nod before he pulled away and turned on his heel. Iroh gave me an apologetic smile as he turned to follow the younger firebender. I swallowed the fear in my throat as I was alone with a group of pirates, and I boldly met anyone who dared to look at me.
Following them to their small sailboat, I was surprised and relieved to find a smaller Fire Nation ship heading towards the ship I was being led to. The captain motioned for me to follow as he climbed onto the Fire Nation ship, where we met Zuko as he stood on the deck. Both of the men stared at each other with a distrustful stare as the ships began to move. I took a seat on the edge of the boat as we started traveling down the river.

Hours later we are full-steam ahead as I stand on the upper deck next to Zuko and Iroh as Zuko points a telescope to the sky. Iroh looked at Zuko with angry eyes, and I quietly stood off to the side as the tension grew between the two Firebenders.
“Sailing into Fire Nation Waters?” Iroh asked as he stood a little ways behind the younger Firebender that was looking through the telescope. The older man was obviously furious as he clenched his fists as he spoke his next words. “Of all the foolish things you’ve done in your nineteen years, this is the most foolish.”
“I have no choice, Uncle.” Zuko said as he slightly adjusted the telescope as he peered into the thick mass of clouds ahead of us. “We are chasing the Avatar.”
“Have you completely forgotten that you are banished by the Fire Lord?” Iroh’s words began calmly, but he almost growled as he finished his question. His voice was full of sadness as he asked his next question, “What if you are caught?”
My heart seized in my chest as the gravity of the older firebender’s words registered in my brain. I looked at the side profile of the prince--his constant reminder of the banishment drew my attention.
“I’m chasing the Avatar.” I felt my lips slip into a frown as Zuko spoke then looked back at his concerned uncle. “My father will understand.”
Are you sure about that? I remembered the story of how Zuko got the scar on his left eye, and why he is ceaseless in his mission to capture the Avatar. If a man was willing to do that to his son, then who knows what he would do if he captured him now?
“You’re giving him too much credit, Nephew.” Iroh’s arms were crossed across his chest as he scoffed at the Prince’s words. “The man I know to be my brother is not the understanding type.”
My heart broke slightly for the Prince as he said nothing and turned his attention back to the telescope. He made a slight adjustment to the telescope before his face squinted to focus on something in the telescope.
“There,” Zuko said as he pointed towards the sky. The hair in Zuko’s ponytail whipped violently in the wind as he turned to yell, “Helmsman, full steam ahead!”
I looked up to the sky and found the underbelly of a sky bison quickly coming into view as the ship’s speed quickly increased. My heart raced in my chest as I heard the shifting of the lower deck and a giant catapult lifted up from below deck. I glanced over the edge in slight shock at the technology of the Fire Nation, and my heart clenched in my chest. My eyebrows knit themselves together as I realized Zuko and Iroh had left to join the soldiers down below on the deck.
An awful smell wafted up from the catapult below, and I had to plug my nose to avoid the sickening smell. Zuko threw a fire blast at the giant ball of stone, and the sulfuric smelling substance caught fire.
“On my mark,” Zuko yelled. “Fire!” With a swipe of a sword, the giant flaming rock sphere was launched into the sky on a collision course with the flying animal. I watched as the giant animal easily evaded the flying ball of fire before I had my attention drawn to the wall of moving Fire Nation warships, and I felt the color drain from my face as I realized we were heading towards a blockade. I quickly rushed down the stairs to join Zuko and Iroh on the main deck as we rapidly closed the distance between our ship and the blockade. I joined them on deck as they moved up to watch what the Avatar did in response to the blockade. I quickly threw my hair up into a bun as I joined them to watch the sky bison quickly head towards the blockade, and I felt my heart drop to my stomach.
“He’s not turning around, so neither are we.”
“Please, Zuko,” There was worry evident in Iroh’s words as he drew the attention of the banished prince. “If they capture you, I cannot do anything. Do not follow the Avatar.” Iroh’s words were a plead at the younger Firebender. I could see the determined look in Zuko’s eyes and I felt my heart seize in my chest as I knew what was about to leave the Prince’s lips. I gently lifted my eyes to the sky and asked for the spirits to guide us as Zuko apologizes to his uncle and ordered the helmsman to run the blockade.
I felt a sinking feeling overwhelm me as I looked out toward the blockade and a line of flames erupted from the ships’ decks. My worried eyes looked over at Iroh, whose eyes reflected mine, but we turned our attention ahead of us. The organ in my chest picked up its pace as a wall of fires spheres flew into the sky at the flying creature and began to rain down in the water around us.
My eyes widened as I felt hands pulling me as I watched a large wave crash over the railing of the ship before it came rushing towards me. I suddenly found myself struggling to breath in cold dark waters as a forceful pressure kept my head under the water. Bright bursts of light lit up the dark water slightly as my limbs splashed about in the water. The need to take a breath overtook the forceful hold on the air in my lungs as I took a deep breath of the liquid around me.
Shaking of the ground underneath me and the pressure of the body covering me brought be back to reality as I heard one of the crew members yell, “Prince Zuko, the engines are damaged!” The pressure of the body covering me left before the same voice continued to yell in my direction. “We need to stop and make repairs!”
“Do not stop this ship.” Zuko growled out from beside me, and I turned to find him standing slightly to the side of me as he focused on the blockade ahead of us as another round of flaming spheres fired into the clouds above us.
I felt my heart clench as a small figure began to freefall towards the sea below as the giant flying bison made a beeline to catch whoever was falling. I felt my hand reach out to clench Zuko’s forearm as I watched as the bison skipped on the surface of the ocean as the figure safely landed in the saddle ontop of the bison. The blockade was relentless as they let another round of fireballs at the creature flying above the water. My eyes widen in surprise as one of the fireballs on a collision course with the bison erupted into a ring of debri around the creature before the creature flew past the blockade and into Fire Nation waters. I tightened my grip on Zuko’s arm as we continued our speed towards the blockade as well. The two ships we rapidly approached were rapidly approaching each other from opposite directions. Smoke trailed in the sky behind our ship as Zuko ordered us full speed ahead despite the impending collision looming in front of us.
Both of the Fire Nation ships in the blockade stopped as our ship passed through. Zuko and I looked up to find Commander Zhao looking at us. I stared back at the Commander audaciously as he narrowed his eyes when he met my gaze. None of the ships made a move to follow us as we continued on our course after the Avatar, and I looked towards the man whose arm I still slightly gripped as he stared at the fading blockade.
We were in Fire Nation territory now, so why didn’t Zhao arrest Zuko? A cold shiver ran through my body as a worse thought ran through my head as I let the Firebender go.
The sun was almost setting a few hours later as I leaned against the steel railing of the upper deck as I watched the dark trail of smoke in the air behind the boat as we cruised in the waters towards the Fire Temple. My stomach twisted as the Prince next to me tightened his grip on the railing.
“Why didn’t Commander Zhao arrest me?” Zuko angrily asks as he looks out to the vast sea ahead of us. I gently placed my hand over Zuko’s that tightly gripped the rail next to me.
“He wants to follow you.” I softly spoke as I watched the trail of smoke growing behind us. “How good would the commander look if he brought the Fire Lord both the Avatar and his son?” My words were bitter as I lightly squeezed Zuko’s hand before crossing my arms across my chest.
“If Zhao wants to follow our trail, then that’s exactly what we’ll let him do.” I watched as Zuko stalked away from the railing of the ship with clenched fists. Iroh and I shared looks of concern as we both followed behind the prince.
The ship changed course a few minutes later as I changed into a Fire Nation dress. Zuko found me shortly later to inform me that he had a grand idea to hide the ship and the crew at a small earth village nearby and use a fisher boat as cover while the crew repairs the engines.
Hours later, we passed by Avatar Roku’s temple as lava burned what little remained of the building. My heart felt heavy as Zuko let out a heavy sigh before he ordered the ship to turn around and head back to the Fire Nation ship. I placed my hand on his shoulder as he faced away from me.
“We will get him, Zuko.” I whispered as I gently squeezed his shoulder then lightly kissed his cheek before I walked away.

A few hours before the sun was set to rise, I held on tightly to Zuko’s waist as his rhino led the way through the forest. I had argued saying that I could ride one of my own, but Zuko had said there weren't enough animals on board the ship for me to take one, so he offered to let me ride with him.
We arrived at a small Earth Kingdom village that was quiet in the early morning hours, and Zuko slowed the rhino to a stop. He hopped down from the rhino and slowly walked toward one of the doors as a villager came out of the house. The older man jumped slightly at the Prince’s intimidating presence.
“Having trouble sleeping?” Zuko said in a mocking tone before he shoved the guy backwards into his house. Watching Zuko shove the innocent man without any remorse left a bitter taste on my tongue as I climbed down from the rhino and approached the man as I shoved Zuko lightly then helped the man up.
“Forgive the Prince,” I kindly spoke as I helped the man up. “He has a bit of a temper.” Iroh lightly chuckled before Zuko’s rough hand found its way to my shoulder. I swatted his rough hand away without looking at the Firebender and kept my attention on the startled citizen.
“I believe that an Airbender, two members of a Water Tribe, and a sky bison were just here though, correct?” I asked as I took some nearby water and healed the slight scratch on the man’s cheek. “Could you tell me where they were heading?” The older man focused his attention on me and not the pissed Firebender that lurked behind me.
“They were heading to the Fire Temple.” The man whispered to me as he leaned in close. “Please don’t hurt us.”
“We will be peacefully,” I briefly looked over my shoulder at the fuming Prince. “Leaving without any more trouble. Thank you for telling me what I needed to know.” I bowed respectfully to the older man, who looked surprised and relieved as he bowed in return.
“Back to the ship, Prince Zuko,” I declared as I turned around. “The Avatar is heading towards Avatar Roku’s shrine.” Zuko quickly turned on his heel and climbed into his rhino before he left without me. I raised an eyebrow at Iroh before I climbed on with him and Iroh took off behind Zuko.
“Expertly handled there, Y/N.” Iroh said with pride in his voice. “I fear that my nephew may not see it as such though.” The older firebender’s voice was sad as he looked towards his fuming nephew riding ahead of us.
“This is not the first time I have disappointed the Prince,” I said with a shrug. “Nor do I believe it will be the last time I disappoint him.” Iroh chuckled. “He will learn to live with it. Brute force isn’t the only way to get shit done.”
Iroh and I made small talk the rest of the ride back to the ship, and we quickly began our journey to the Fire Nation Temple. The Prince said nothing to me as I walked past him on the ship and headed to my room. My peace, however, only lived a couple of hours before rough knocks sounded on my door.
“You overstepped—“ Zuko’s angry words were interrupted by a splash of water from me as he angrily entered my room.
“You are far too fired up to be coming into my peaceful room like that.” I said without turning my attention from my art I was working on. “Calm down and try again.” I heard Zuko forcefully take a deep breath before he started over.
“You overstepped talking to that Earthbender.” He said in a calmer voice, and I softly smiled before I turned around.
“You didn’t have to push the poor man—“
“I am on—“ Zuko interjected, and I felt a fire light under my skin.
“Stop interrupting me when you think I’m going to say something you don’t like.” I angrily spat. “You are forgetting that—“ Zuko’s fist colliding with the wall stopped my current words as I raised an eyebrow at the angry man and crossed my arms over my chest. He breathed heavily until he calmed down then turned to face me.
“On the deck, now.” I said as I stood up and pushed past the Firebender, who looked surprised at me but followed without any further conversation.
As we arrived at the deck, several crew members gave us curious glances as I stopped in the middle of the deck and turned to face Zuko. I took off the top part of my cobalt blue dress so I was standing in my undershirt and pants I had been wearing under the dress before I threw the dress somewhere behind me. I kicked off my shoes somewhere else off to the side of us. Zuko’s cheeks reddened as he watched me strip before I stood across from him with my arms folded across my chest.
“Since you seem to think that I don’t deserve respect—“ Zuko opened his mouth to interrupt me, but the warning look in my eyes made him shut his mouth and let me finish speaking. “You leave me no choice but to challenge you to an Agni Kai.”
“Of course, I’m not a firebender, so we will have to modify the rules.” I smirked as Zuko’s eyes widened at my statement. “No element bending. Hand-to-hand combat only, and the first one to either pin the other to the ground three times or have the other tap out wins. Sounds fair?” Zuko pondered it for a moment before he smiled confidently and nodded.
“Before we continue, if I win, you have to respect me as an equal in this mission to find the Avatar.”
“And if I win?” Zuko asked with a raised eyebrow.
“If you win then I shall only intervene when necessary.” Zuko frowned slightly. “Meaning, I will let you handle it unless I see a dangerous situation about to happen.” Pondering my terms for a brief moment, Zuko nodded.
“Deal.” He said before I stuck my hand out.
“Shake on it then we will start the Agni Kai.” Zuko’s hand carefully shook mine as some of the members of the crew secretly started to stand around to see what was going on. Zuko and I went and stood on either side of the deck before we nodded to each other and the match began.
I took a defensive stance as Zuko quickly ran towards me, but I anticipated him coming to try and knock me off-balance. Centering myself as I grabbed Zuko’s wrists, I ripped them off of my shoulders before I grabbed only one wrist to twist it behind his back. Using the slight discomfort as a distraction, I kicked the back of Zuko’s knees and effectively knocked him to the ground. Seizing the moment of surprise, I quickly wrapped my forearm around Zuko’s neck in a rear naked chokehold and slightly applied pressure as I wrapped my legs around his waist. I gradually applied more and more pressure until I felt the light double tap of Zuko’s hand against my arm.
As I released the Fire Prince and stood up, the crew members erupted in applause as I offered a hand to help Zuko up. With cheeks red as tomatoes, Zuko ignored my hand and helped himself up.
“That’s not fair—“ Zuko started, but Iroh’s laugh interrupted the younger Firebender.
“My, my, my dear Nephew,” Iroh started with a huge grin on his face as he clapped a hand on both mine and Zuko’s backs. “Hasn’t anyone told you that everything is fair in love and war.”
Zuko’s cheeks couldn’t turn any redder than they were as he stared at his uncle with wide eyes, but I felt my cheeks burning as I giggled at the two firebenders. Zuko stopped talking as I giggled before he cleared his throat and bowed to me.
“I supposed that you may have been…right and that I often forget that you are a princess.” My eyes widened at Zuko’s words as he straightened up to look me in my eyes as he dropped his voice to a whisper so only I could hear him. “I should also remember that you don’t break pinky promises.”
“Thank you.” With cheeks red as roses, I bowed slightly to the Prince before I straightened my shoulders and flirtatiously smiled at Zuko. “Not bad for my first Agni Kai, huh?”

Zuko and I made dinner and training our routine for the next week as we awaited any news or unusual reports that could lead us to the Avatar. Lieutenant Jee had mentioned that there was reports of children in the Earth Kingdom were playing with ice, so that’s how the three of us--Zuko, Iroh and myself--ended up in the temperate forest of the Earth Kingdom. We had split up to cover more ground, and I was pushing my way through some bamboo when I stumbled upon a clearing where there were three pools of steaming water.
I had been to some hot springs when I visited the Northern Water Tribe, but I wasn’t expecting to find any in the Earth Kingdom. My eyes widened as I walked over and tested the water. It was the perfect temperature, and I wanted to melt into the water. I looked back to the wall of bamboo stalks blocking the view of the springs, and I looked back to the hot spring.
Deciding that I could still embrace this journey and experience the world around me, I stripped down to my undergarments and hung my blue robes on a nearby tree limb. I figured that I could do the walk back any undergarments as long as no fight broke out. My body sunk heavily into the perfectly warm water as I sat down in the spring. I leaned back so that my head rested lightly against the ridge of the hotspring. I had just closed my eyes to relish in the water when I heard a familiar voice calling for me.
“Y/N!” The color drained from my face as the voice grew closer. “Where are you?”
We’re leaving already? I frowned as I heard the Firebender walk through the bamboo wall.
“Y/N!”
“I’m over here.” I calmly said loud enough for the Prince to hear me, but I didn’t bother to open my eyes to look at him as I heard him stop.
“We--” Zuko cleared his throat. “We’re closing in on the Avatar’s trail, and I don’t want to lose him.
“Alright. Just give me a moment--” I started to say, but Zuko interrupted me.
“Y/N, we don’t have time--” Zuko’s words stopped as I sat up in the pool of water. The air was slightly chilly on my exposed shoulders and almost exposed chest. I crawled over to the edge closest to Zuko, whose face was as red as spicy bulgogi sauce, and raised a surprisingly confident eyebrow at him.
“Shall I get up now?” I let out a laugh as Zuko quickly turned around.
“Please join us back at the ship in a few minutes.” I continued laughing as Zuko retreated back to the safety of the bamboo curtain. Chuckling to myself as I stood up in the hot spring, I quickly dressed and headed back to the boat. Zuko’s eyes avoided looking at me as I arrived with a smile on my face and wet clothes draped over my arm.
“Onto the next adventure!” I cheered with a laugh as Iroh smiled and laughed at me while Zuko walked away yelling orders at the crew.

Several hours later I sat fussing with my hair as I finished the final twist in my hair. I smiled to myself as I took a final look in the small mirror in my room. Smoothing down the front of the red dress I wore, I felt the butterflies fluttering nervously about within my abdomen.
Should I wear my regular clothes? The anxious thought crossed my mind as I briefly looked at the three other outfits I had tried on. Deciding that I liked the way red looked on me, I left my room and headed towards the dining room’s closed double doors. I took a moment to tuck any stray hairs behind my ears before I opened the door to find Zuko sitting at the table. Two plates rested on each side of the table across from each other, and Zuko was sitting at the one facing towards the door. He stood up quickly to greet me as I smiled at the red tint to his cheeks and walked into the room. He wore the same long black robe he relaxed in with some comfortable clothes underneath.
“Y/N,” Zuko’s voice sounded a bit nervous as he spoke. “You look pretty tonight.” His eyes widened as I blushed from his words. “Not that you don’t look pretty all the time.” My heart leapt for joy in my chest as my cheeks burned from the compliment, and I smiled at the Firebender before I sheepishly replied to him.
“You don’t look to bad yourself.” I sent a wink his direction as I found some courage to add, “I like seeing you relaxed.” Zuko’s cheeks tinted pink before he smiled and motioned to the plate across from where he was sitting.
“Care to join me for some dinner?” I nodded as I went and grabbed the plate from the side of the table and carried it to sit next to the slightly shocked Firbender’s spot at the table.
“Don’t look at me like that,” I said with a slight laugh. “I feel so far away sitting on the other side.” Sitting down on the bench, Zuko came and sat in his original spot at the table. Shortly after we sat down, the doors opened as Shisam and Zaijim walked in with two plates and a pitcher of water. They served us before bowing and walking out the room, closing the door behind them. Uncovering the dish, I found a spiced dish greeting my nostrils as I smiled to find that it was my favorite Fire Nation dish--extra spicy fire noodles with spicy garlic pan-seared Salmon.
“Is this okay?” Zuko’s voice was soft as he asked his question before he added in a low whisper, “It’s one of my favorite dishes back home.”
“Really? It’s one of your favorite dishes?” I asked in slight shock as I looked at the sheepish Firebender. “This is one of my favorite Fire Nation dishes too.” The smile on my lips was wide as it was Zuko’s turn to look at me with slight surprise before the surprise faded to a smile.
“I never knew that.” Zuko casually said as he started to eat his noodles with his chopsticks.
“You were too busy chasing the Avatar before, remember?” I asked with a light laugh before using my own chopsticks to start eating. Zuko’s cheeks had just returned to their normal caramel color, but my teasing had his cheeks tinting pink again. “I’m still torn in the decision of if it’s my favorite dish though.” I shrugged. “I still love the sea prawn dumpling soup my mom makes back home.” The Fire Nation’s prince looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
“Sea prawn dumpling soup?” He asked with curiosity clear in his voice. “I can’t say that I have had it before.”
“Maybe I’ll make some for you one day.” I smiled at Zuko as I reached for my glass of water. “It’s been ages since I have had some. It won’t be as good as Mother’s though.” I let out an airy laugh before I took a sip of water as my cheeks heated slightly under the look Zuko gave me.
“I’ll hold you up to that.” He said as he grabbed his glass of water. Zuko and I held a light conversation as we continued to eat our food. We shared small details about some of our favorite things from our childhoods and the things we missed most about our homes. I loved listening to Zuko as he talked about feeding the turtle ducks as a child, and I talked about how I used to ice skate as a kid on the frozen lake back home.
“I miss it sometimes.” I said with a sigh a little while later. “The simplicity of home.” Zuko grew quiet as he slightly frowned.
“I do too.” He said quietly as he swirled the liquid in his cup, but I reached a gentle hand out and grabbed his hand that didn’t hold the cup. Zuko turned his attention away from the cup to look at me as I softly smiled at the Firebender.
“As much as I miss it,” I started off quietly as I slowly leaned forward towards Zuko. “I can’t say that I don’t love this life I live with you.” Zuko’s wide eyes searched mine for a shred of deceit in my words, but he found nothing but honesty. “It’s funny--I used to dream about traveling the world when I was a little girl.” I chuckled at my naive self. “I soon realized that wouldn’t be possible.” Smiling as I looked at Zuko, I gently touched the outer edge of his scar. “Life has a funny way of proving me wrong.” I gently placed a kiss on Zuko’s lips before I gave him a genuine smile.
“Thank you for inviting me to dinner tonight.” Zuko’s cheeks were red as I leaned back and removed my hand from his face.
“Shall we do this again tomorrow?” Zuko nervously asked in a soft voice, and I tried my best to bite back the big smile on my lips at how cute the Firebender was when he was nervous.
“Absolutely.” Zuko gave me a smile as I smiled at him then I stood up and gathered the dishes. Zuko tried to grab the dishes from me.
“I can handle this.” One of my eyebrows raised itself at his words.
“I thought it was improper of someone of such status to do the dishes?” I said in a teasing tone, and Zuko’s cheeks turned slightly crismon as he slightly tugged at the dishes in my hands. “Plus, I’m late making my cookies.”
“I can handle the dishes, so you can start your cookies.” Zuko’s eyebrow raised itself as he made his offer, and I laughed at his attempt to negotiate with me.
“Deal.” I said as I let go of the plates so Zuko could carry them. “You just want to know the secret recipe.” The teasing tone to my words must’ve sent his cheeks burning because the shade of red on his cheeks darkened.
We walked together to the kitchen and started on our tasks as we joked and carried on. Once Zuko finished the dishes, he came over and started helping me make the cookies. I had set down a cup of measured flour on the counter.
“Pour this into the bowl slowly--” My instructions were cut short by the flour dust cloud that attacked Zuko’s face as he dumped the cup of flour into the mixing bowl. The fine white powder on the Firebender’s shocked face made me grab my abdomen and double over in laughter. He grabbed a nearby towel and wiped his face from the white powder as I measured another cup of flour. I moved to slowly add the flour in, but my hand shook too violently and the other half of the flour fell into the bowl and caused a puff of flour to erupt in my face. A brief silence fell upon the kitchen before mine and Zuko’s laughter filled the air.
“It looked so fun when you did it,” I teased between fits of laughter. “I just had to do it too.” Zuko was still laughing as he handed me the same towel he used to wipe his face. I smiled mischievously as he kept laughing at me before I took a handful of flour and threw it at the laughing Firebender. His laughter ceased as the reality of the situation dawned on him. I smiled as I snuck another handful of flour behind him back and slowly backed away from the flour as Zuko’s eyes shifted to look at me mischievously. I let out a small yelp as I ducked the handful of powder the Prince grabbed and threw at me before he met another surprise blast of white powder. I couldn’t hold back the laughter that erupted from me at the annoyed look on Zuko’s face. The laughter didn’t stop as he tackled me to the ground and pinned my wrists beside my head.
“Oh? So it’s funny to do that huh?” Zuko teased as he looked at me with a smirk. “How funny is this then?” He quickly threw a handful of flour in my face, which stopped my laughter for a moment as I stared at the Firebender with wide eyes. The intense stare off lasted only a few moments before I started laughing again, and Zuko joined in as he let go of my wrists. As our laughter died down, Zuko averted his gaze with a blush as I gently smiled at him. I reached out to light touch his scar, which caused Zuko to slowly look at me. My eyes met Zuko’s intense golden orbs as I looked at him with a big smile.
“Who knew life with you could be so much fun?” I whispered then wiggled my eyebrows at Zuko before the Firebender’s cheeks turned red and he got off of me to help me up from the floor. We washed our hands and I let Zuko clean the floors while I finished making the batter for my cookies. Zuko helped me finish baking the cookies, and he even accompanied me with delivering the cookies to the crew after we finished washing the dishes.
As we walked back with a plate of cookies for Iroh, I was almost startled by Zuko’s hand slipping into mine, but I didn’t let him see the rush of blood that came to my cheeks as his fingers interlaced with mine. Zuko pulled me to a soft stop outside of my door, and I turned to look at him with a raised eyebrow.
“I can finish taking the cookies to my uncle.” Zuko said with tinted cheeks. “Thank you for coming to dinner with me.” Smiling widely at Zuko, I leaned forward to whisper to him.
“Thank you for inviting me to dinner.” I winked at Zuko before I leaned back. “Are you sure that you want to drop off Iroh’s cookies? I can do that.” Zuko nodded his head.
“You need to rest.” He said without meeting my eyes. “The Avatar won’t hide for long, and I’ll need you there with me.” His last words were barely a whisper as I felt my heart doing flips in my chest. I lightly kissed Zuko on the lips in response, and then kissed his cheek.
“Shall you and I train tomorrow too?” I asked with a raised eyebrow, and Zuko smiled at me.

I woke up to a tea tray sitting on the table by my bed with a small folded up note resting beside the tea pot. Rubbing my eyes and sitting up, I reached over to grab the note and read it.
For keeping you up last night. I recognized the neat script as the handwriting of a certain Firebender. With a smile on my face, I poured me a cup of the jasmine tea and drank it while I got ready for the day. Throwing my hair into a high ponytail, I knew I wanted to try and practice some more combat moves. Opening my door, I almost ran into the raised hand of the Prince as he was about to knock on my door before I stopped and let out a small yelp.
“Zuko--” I said as I took a calming breath. “--I wasn’t expecting you to be on the other side.” A light nervous laugh left my lips before I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “I was on my way to find you actually. Thank you for the tea.” The Firebenders cheeks turned pink as he smiled at me.
“I also had something to ask you.” I quickly added before I bit the inside of my cheek. Zuko’s eyes momentarily widened before he tried to play stoic.
“Oh?” He said. “What do you need to ask me?”
“Could I train with some of the other Fire Nation soldiers?” Before Zuko could say anything, I quickly added. “If we are going to be fighting, then I need to know how to fight multiple people.” Zuko’s eyes seemed to bounce slightly as he looked over my features in the dim light. He seemed to get lost in looking at me briefly before he cleared his throat and averted his eyes in embarrassment.
“That makes sense.” Zuko agreed before he looked back to me with eyes that were stoic again. “We can arrange it on one condition.” My eyebrow raised itself in curiosity before Zuko answered my nonverbal question. “You join me for dinner tonight.” My cheeks were as red as Zuko’s as I smiled at him.
“Jasmine tea and dinner?” I teased as my heart raced in my chest. “A woman could get use to this.” I let out a chuckle as Zuko’s cheeks got a bit redder before I stepped past him and closed the door to my room behind me. I turned to walk away, but Zuko’s fingers gently wrapped around my wrist. Looking back to the Firebender, I found him shyly looking down before he hesitantly looked at me and leaned in to kiss my forehead. Smiling at the flustered look on my face, Zuko let go of me and turned on his heel to walk away from me.
“I’ll see you for dinner then.” He casually called back as he walked away, and I felt the butterflies in my stomach flutter about in excitement.
I could get used to this.
A few hours later I stood across from three Fire Nation soldiers that I had convinced to be training buddies with me. The sun was high in the sky above the boat as I let the winds from the sea gently blow the loose strands of my hair as I watched two of the soldiers get ready to attack me.
Anticipating the two blasts of fire sent my way, I countered with a large water wave to extinguish the flames before taking the wave and making a large chunk of ice in front of me. Kicking the ice towards the soldier on the right, I used the force of the kick to send me into a backflip as I avoided the third soldier’s advancement of fire attacks. Landing on my feet and walking backwards, I met the fire blasts with defensive whips of water before I sent a small wave of water towards the stomping feet of the Firebender and froze the water. The Firebender slipped on the ice as his foot came down and he fell with a thud to the ground as I sent another wave to knock one of the other two over. Ice helped pin his hands and feet to the deck of the boat.
I barely dodged a fireball that flew by my head as the standing Firebender took his opportunity to attack while I was distracted. I roundhouse kicked the soldier in the head before using the surprise contact of my foot to send a wave and knock him prone a few feet away from me. I stood in the middle of the three soldiers as they moved to get off of the ground. Keeping my eyes watching the three of them, I summoned a large chunk of ice before sending sliced discs off towards the three Firebenders that all connected and knocked the three of them on their backs.
Silence greeted me as I looked between the three soldiers on the ground before they all flipped upright and I flipped to engage the nearest one in hand-to-hand combat as I steadied myself on the ground with one hand and swiped my leg at his feet. As my legs swept one Firebender to the ground, I used the motion of my kick to summon a wave to side swipe one of the other two Firebenders to the ground before I tucked and rolled to avoid an attack from the other soldier. Sending a large chunk of ice towards the soldier that attacked me, he fell back with a yelp as the ice exploded into decent sized projectiles when it collided with his attempt to block a direct hit.
I barely had time to shift my weight on my feet before I had to create a ice shield to block a blast of fire. Using a wave of water, I turned it to ice as I slid out from behind the shield and behind the attacking Firebender before I quickly used the ice and manipulated the water to capture the soldier’s body in a thick block of ice. Turning around, I had just a moment to catch the fist coming to hit me before I retaliated with a right hook of my own at the Firebender. Using the temporary dizziness I caused the soldier, I twisted his arm behind his back as I moved to push him to the ground while I held his twisted arm.
“I yield!” He said with a yelp as I pushed him with my foot further into the floorboards of the ship. I immediately let him go and moved to help him up when the sound of applause stopped me in my tracks. Looking around, I found that I had drawn quite the audience as several of the ship’s crew was standing around the edges for the deck facing towards the center where we had been fighting. My cheeks went hot with embarrassment as I helped the soldier off of the ground. The three soldiers bowed to me in respect before one of them slightly limped away, and the other two held a hurt limb as they followed the other one.
“Might I say that was a fine battle to watch.” Iroh’s proud voice said as he approached me with Zuko by his side. “You are certainly becoming a skilled Waterbender.”
“The exploding ice chunks are new.” Zuko commented, and I felt my cheeks redden further.
“I had seen some of the Earthbenders use some moves like that while we were in Omashu.” I admitted and sheepishly avoided Zuko’s eyes. “I just added a Waterbender-flair to the move.” Zuko’s eyes widened with slight surprise at my confession while Iroh smiled at me with pride.
“Creating your own moves is a sign of a powerful bender.” Iroh’s words made me more sheepish as the older Firebender beamed at Zuko as I smoothed down the front of my shirt. “We are perhaps blessed with the presence of a Master Waterbender.”
“I am far from a Master.” I said without stuttering. “I still have much to learn.” I bit my lip gently as I glanced at Zuko and briefly made eye contact with him before I gave him a small smile. “It helps to have a good teacher.” I sent a wink his way as his cheeks reddened and I broke eye contact with him to look at Iroh, who looked between Zuko and I with a knowing smile. Trying to hide my embarrassment, I bowed respectfully to the two Firebenders before coming up with an excuse to leave and escaping to the sanctuary of my room.

I had just pulled the undershirt over my head to expose my wound when a gentle set of knocks sounded at my door.
“It’s me.” Zuko’s voice was quiet from the other side of the door. “Can I come in?” Sighing as I looked down at the undergarments that kept my chest covered, I debated telling the Prince to buzz off.
Why do you need to check on your distraction? I thought sarcastically before I granted him permission to enter. I turned my back to the door before I could see Zuko walk in.
“Where are we off to next?” I asked as I finished taking the shirt off of me. “I know you saw the sky bison flying away too.” The last words I whispered were soft as I held my shirt in my hands. The sound of a door closing then water sloshing in a bucket brought my attention to the Prince as he set down a bucket before he looked at the wound on my left shoulder. The area around it was slightly red as the cells within worked hard to repair the damage caused by the rock, and it was slightly oozing a bit of clear liquid now. Zuko took a seat on the edge my bed as he rolled up his sleeves.
“We must wait for news of anything unusual.” Zuko’s voice sounded defeated as he grabbed a rag from within the bucket. “It’s a waiting game now.” He carefully wrung out the excess water from the rag before he moved to come towards me, but I grabbed his wrist lightly to stop him.
“I can handle my wounds.” I felt the rush of blood as it came to turn my cheeks red in the soft candlelight. I found it hard to look at Zuko as his eyes tried to convey whatever emotions he was feeling. Looking away from him, I tried to grab the rag, but Zuko tightened his grip on the cloth.
“I know you can handle your wound.” Zuko’s words were barely above a whisper. “Please, just let me help.” I bit back any hurt remark I would’ve thrown at him as I nodded my head and allowed Zuko to tend to the wound. His touch was gentle as he cleaned the area around the wound, and we sat in silence as neither of us made eye contact with the other. I wondered if he could feel how rapid my heart was beating with his proximity, or if he knew how messed up he had my heart, mind, and feelings.
“You shouldn’t have done that.” He whispered as he dipped the rag back in the bucket.
“There’s a long list of things I shouldn’t do.” I said just as quietly as the Firebender had. “So, I’m going to need you to elaborate.”
“You should have gone back to the boat.” Zuko said as he brought the rag back to clean my wound. I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye, but his gaze was focused on the wound in my shoulder. The golden orbs held a deep sadness as he paused his action when he noticed my gaze on his face.
Gently taking the rag from Zuko, I levitated a small ball of water to me before maneuvering it to occupy the small deep hole in my shoulder. Closing my eyes, I focused on the flow of water in my body as I willed the wound to close. Bringing my hands back down, I heard Zuko’s sharp intake of air as he saw the faint scar that replaced the open wound.
“If I had, then Iroh would be the one with the injury.” My eyes remained closed as I spoke softly. “Staying on the boat is on the list of something I shouldn’t have done.” A moment of silence passed between us before Zuko quietly asked.
“What else is on the list?” I felt my heart stop briefly before it began to rapidly beat as I swallowed my nerves and decided to honestly speak with the man looking at me with golden pools for eyes.
“I probably shouldn’t have been on the boat to the Fire Nation three years ago.” I opened my eyes to look at my hands that were placed in my lap. “I probably should’ve died once I stepped foot in the Fire Nation Capital.” A joyless chuckle left me as felt a wave of emotions crash into me.
“I shouldn’t have kept my dream about the Avatar to myself, but I wouldn’t have been able to see the light leave your eyes if it was another empty lead.” I wet my lips and swallowed before I continued. “I shouldn’t have been jealous at the thought of someone waiting for you back home, and I shouldn’t have been so relieved when you didn’t.” Looking up, I found intense golden pools staring at me, and the wave of emotions hit me harder as my heart raced within my ribcage.
“I shouldn’t be in an arranged marriage with you. I mean, you’re a Firebender,” I motioned towards Zuko before I took some water from the bucket and played with it between my hands. “And I’m a Waterbender.” I guided the water to extinguish one of the lit candles nearby, and I sighed.
Our elements themselves are yin and yang.
“I shouldn’t hate how the world treats you, and I shouldn’t see the good in you.” I could feel my heartbeat in my throat as I barely whispered my next words as I looked at Zuko again. “I shouldn’t care about you as much as I do.” The only sound in the room was the soft inhales and exhales of our breathing as the Firebender looked back at me. My eyes tried their best to memorize every detail of the man’s face in case I didn’t see him this close again.
“There’s a long list of things I shouldn’t have done.” I said in a normal tone as I leaned back into the chair. “Two things aren’t on that list: helping you rescue your uncle, and helping you regain your honor.” A yawn escaped my lips before I could stop it.
“You’ll have to forgive me, Prince Zuko, but I am exhausted after today’s events.” Zuko frowned slightly at his formal title. “I am in desperate need of a bath before bed.” I laughed a bit to help hide the heat of embarrassment in my cheeks. Zuko stood after I started to stand, but he gently grabbed my wrist as I went to walk past him, stopping me in my tracks. Turning to look at him, I felt a gentle tug before soft lips met mine and a hand cupped the left side of my face. As his other hand cupped the other side of my face, I closed my eyes and kissed the Firebender back before he pulled back to look at me.
“You shouldn’t have done that….” I whispered as I searched Zuko’s eyes for the answer to the question my heart was dying to know.
“I shouldn’t have done a lot of things.” Zuko whispered as his golden eyes steadily held my gaze. “I shouldn’t have been such an asshole to you.” Zuko’s right thumb gently stroked the left side my face as his eyes put his guilt on full display. “I shouldn’t have called you a distraction.”
“I shouldn’t act like you don’t mean anything to me.” Disbelief overtook my face as my heart leapt in my throat, and I struggled to swallow it back down.
“You shouldn’t say things you don’t mean….” I whispered while my mind raced and my heart panicked as my eyes flickered to look at Zuko’s lips before looking back to the golden pools. A soft smile was on Zuko’s lips as he looked at me before his hands left my face and he extended his right pinky to me.
“I pinky promise that I won’t say anything I don’t mean.” He whispered as his hopeful eyes searched mine. With my heart racing in my chest, I wrapped my pinky around his and squeezed.
“There’s another one more thing on my list.” Zuko whispered as he kept holding the pinky promise with reddened cheeks, and I raised an eyebrow. “I shouldn’t enjoy doing this.” Using my pinky to close the space between us, Zuko’s lips met mine in a gentle kiss. With red cheeks, we pulled away from each other and I let out a small giddy chuckle then smiled at the Firebender.
“I’m glad I wasn’t the only one.” Zuko smiled as he suddenly looked away in embarrassment before he cleared his throat and lightly rubbed the back of his head.
“I fear that I have kept you from getting to bed,” Zuko’s words were soft as he nervously shifted on his feet. “Forgive me.” He said in a teasing manner as the corner of his lip raised in a slight smile. I sucked my teeth as I slightly shook my head in a teasing manner.
“I might be incline to forgive you if there’s jasmine tea involved in the apology.” I smiled at Zuko as I rocked slightly on my heels then straightened up and stifled another yawn. “I really need to go bathe before I pass out in the water and drown.”
“There will be no drowning with me around.” Zuko said with a small laugh. “I wouldn’t want to break my pinky promise.” I smiled as Zuko walked towards the door.
“Good night, Zuko.” I said as he turned around to look at me once he was in the hall before I got on my tip toes and placed a light kiss on his lips.
“Good night, Y/N.” The Firebender’s cheeks were red as he turned around and went into his room across the hall.

With the light of the moon guiding me through the shadows of the city, I snuck my way outside of the palace’s walls where a lonely guard stood on alert. Knocking her out with a rear naked chokehold, I drug the body into a nearby shed before I stripped her of her Earthbender armor and tied her to a wooden post in the room. Putting on the uniform, I quietly made my way back to the unconscious guard’s post before walking towards the front gates. I gave a nod to the guards as I walked past them and into the palace.
Once inside, I walked around while trying my best to look like I was in that location with intention before I arrived downstairs at the holding cells. Another Earthbender guard was talking to an older Earthbender guard as I arrived, but I stuck to the shadows as I listened to their conversation.
“Sir, I was assigned prisoner transfer duty,” Zuko’s innocent voice floated through the air around me and my eyes widened as I realized he had also come up with the same idea to rescue his uncle. “But I’m…late. If my commander finds out--” Zuko’s words were spoken with uncertainty. “I’m already in enough trouble this month….” A small moment of silence passed between the two before the Earthguard spoke.
“The Firebender was taken to the Pit; the other prisoner is still here.” My eyebrows furrowed at the mention of a second prisoner.
“The other prisoner?” Zuko asked the same question I thought in my head.
“Yeah. The bald kid. He’s with the King right now.” I frowned as I realized the predicament Zuko must’ve felt at this moment, but I hoped he was smart enough to know that he had better luck rescuing his uncle than taking on the whole earth kingdom with no help other than a Waterbender.
“Thank you sir. I will make haste to catch up.”
“Don’t forget that the path through the forest is the fastest route. Take the shortcut through the tunnels ahead to try and catch up.” The Earthbender guard bowed as Zuko did and then left down another hallway. Once the guard was out of sight, I quietly stepped out of the shadows and down the stairs. Zuko turned to look at me, but I knew the dimly lit hallway hid the details of my face just as well as it hid Zuko’s.
“At ease, soldier.” Putting my hands up in mock surrender, I softly spoke the words. The tension in Zuko’s shoulders slightly eased as he realized when I stepped closer that I was a friend. “Come on, we’re late enough for the prisoner transfer as it is.” Zuko nodded as we walked through the tunnel like the Earthbender had said and arrived to a small trail in the woods around the palace.
Once we were a safe enough distance away, Zuko and I tossed the helmets away and started running along the road in hopes to catch up to the convoy. After a few hours, I had to slow down to a stop as Zuko and I reached a split in the road. I was breathing heavily as my lungs tried to compensate for the intense amount of running we had just done, but I was suddenly thankful for all the days I would drive the crew crazy running laps around the deck. Resting my hands on my knees, I watched Zuko walk over to the path on the right and lean down to pick something off of the ground. I straightened up as Zuko did, but I couldn’t see whatever he had picked up.
“This way.” Zuko called back to me over his shoulder before he started off down the right path, and I was not too far behind him. As Zuko and I jogged along the path, I watched the thin sticks of the trees in the forest around us slowly disappear as an early morning fog crept in and permeated the forest. We came to a small clearing where we could see the imprints of wagon wheels in the moisten road of the path.
“They were here recently.” I said as I leaned down and touched the slightly damp spot on the ground. “We are close, Zuko.” I stood up and wiped my hands on my earthbender outfit then looked ahead of us. “We may be able to cut them off if we travel on either side of the trail.” I stripped off the heavy gear that weighed me down, and I let out a relieved sigh as I didn’t realize just how heavy that piece was for me. Looking back to the Firebender, I found him staring at me, and I felt my heart somersault in my chest before I moved to the right side of the trail. “You lead, I’ll follow.”
We heard the convoy before we saw them, and I briefly looked at Zuko as he jumped to set a tree on fire in front of the large bird an Earthbender leading the convoy was riding. Both of the large birds threw their rider off as the tree crashed down to block the convoy’s route before snapping at the humans and running away from them. Throwing a ball to block the back side of the cart in, Zuko jumped and landed in front of the convoy. I followed his lead as I used the back ledge of the cart to jump and kick the guard in the back. I formed a small block of ice at the bottom of my foot as it connected with his cheek, sending him flying back with an audible thud on the side of the road. Landing of my left foot, I spun on my heel and roundhouse kicked one of the guards that tried to run towards me. I shifted to attack the guard again when a blast of fire from behind the Earthbender made the man drop to the ground in front of me.
Looking over, I watched as Zuko approached Iroh’s outstretched hands and used a downward kick of fire to bust the metal chains binding the older Firebender’s wrists. I tried not to think about the heat rushing to my cheeks as I turned my attention to the Earthbenders as they helped on of the men up. I walked forward as Zuko sent a fireblast their way as he leapt over the wagon and flipped to the ground beside me. Iroh joined Zuko’s other side as the three of us looked at the three Earthbenders.
Two of the earth benders pulled two large chunks of rock from the earth and sent them in our direction. Zuko pulled me back as Iroh used one of the chains that had been wrapped around him as a heated whip to break both of the chunks apart. Letting go of me, Zuko used one hand to flip in front of Iroh as he released a spin kick full of fire and knocking down the two Earthbenders. I gathered the water molecules from the fog around us and encased the remaining Earthbender’s upperbody in a case of ice to prevent him from bending the rock from the earth as Iroh flung his chain like a whip. The chain wrapped around the Earthbender’s leg and sent the Earthbender falling to the ground as Iroh pulled the chain quickly. My ice shattered as the guard fell to the ground. Iroh walked towards the Earthbender with a serious look on his face. As the Earthbender scrambled to crawl backwards from the older Firebender, Iroh gathered his chains into his right hand as he stood above the guard.
“Do it.” The guard said through clenched teeth as he accepted his fate. The forest around us fell silent as I held my breath to see what the older Firebender would do. He took some deep breaths as he looked at the younger man on the ground.
“We’ve all seen enough death.” Iroh turned away from the guard and walked towards Zuko and I. Zuko turned to follow Iroh. As I turned to do the same, I saw the guard quickly get up and let out an angry grunt. Without blinking I felt a sharp sting as a large sharp rock pierced my shoulder and let out a sharp cry as I sent ice daggers at the Earthbender. Closing my eyes and gripping the protrusion of the rock implanted in my shoulder, I focused on keeping my breathing even as I pulled the rock out. Biting back a scream of pain, I toss the rock to the ground before placing a hand against the bleeding wound as I faced the two Firebenders.
“We need to go.” Iroh said as he looked around us. “There will be more of them coming.”
“But Y/N--” I waved a dismissive hand at Zuko’s concerned words as I walked between the two of them.
“We need to go, Prince Zuko.” I said while applying slight pressure to my wound. My heart squeezed within my ribcage, and I couldn’t look at the man whose voice held concern for me as I led the walk towards the boat.
Once the sun had almost set behind the horizon, the three of us arrived at the boat we used to get to the shore. Climbing into the boat, I bit my tongue to control the yelp as my wound reopened from the motion. After Iroh and Zuko settled into the boat, I used my waterbending to coax the boat into the water.
“It seems like we are always getting on or off boats.” Iroh lightheartedly said as Zuko rowed away from the coast. I let out a small chuckle at the older man’s words, but the motion of laughter caused a slight grimace on my face. Silence filled the boat briefly as Zuko stopped paddling as he looked up at the sky above us. Looking above us, I could barely make out the dark silhouette of a large flying creature in the darkened sky.
“What is it, Zuko?” Iroh asked as the figure disappeared behind the treeline.
“It’s nothing.” The younger Firebender said without turning back to look at Iroh as he slowly started to paddle again.
“Are you alright?” Iroh asked as he shifted his attention to me. The older Firebender’s face showed his sorrow for my injury. I shrugged, but put most of the effort into the side that wasn’t hurt. Shifting slightly to lean over the side, I rinsed my hands in the water as Zuko slowly padded. Once my hands were clean, I sat up as I maneuvered the water to create a small wave to propel the small canoe along back to the ship. Zuko turned to look at me as he opened his mouth to say something, but he closed his mouth at the shake of my head as I avoided eye contact with him. “It’s faster than you paddling.”
“You’re bleeding again.” Zuko’s soft words caused me to look down at the white undershirt of the Earthbender armor that was red with fresh blood from the small wound in my shoulder.
You’re just a distraction. Zuko’s words echoed in my mind as I sped up the boat a bit and avoided any further eye contact with the eyes staring at me with concern.
“It’s a mere flesh wound.” Iroh bit back a bark of laughter that helped to offset the rapid pounding within my chest.
Once we arrived back to the ship, I bit the side of my cheek as I climbed the rope ladder first to get back on the boat. Lieutenant Jee helped me up, but accidentally grabbed a tender area of my injured shoulder and I couldn’t hold back the cry of pain. I was quickly released as I held a gentle hand to my shoulder.
“I’m sorry--” I dismissed the Lieutenant’s apology with a wave of my hand.
“It’s okay Lieutenant Jee.” I heard Zuko’s angry steps as I saw the Lieutenant’s face pale at the man approaching. “Calm down, Prince Zuko.” My calm words made him stop behind me. “He couldn’t have known. Show him a bit of mercy, please.”
“I am tired.” I announced without turning around to look at the man with the heated stare, then I left to go to my room.

A few weeks later I was on the deck of the ship watching with excitement as the landmass of the Earth Kingdom got closer. I was itching to leave the boat and put some space between Zuko and I as the Avatar mission brought us to the city of Omashu.
“You’re in good spirits today.” Zuko’s voice sounded from behind me, and I fought the urge to roll my eyes before I turned to look over my shoulder. Iroh and Zuko were standing nearby as they looked at the approaching coastline, but I said nothing and turned my attention back to the view in front of me. I heard Iroh slightly chuckle as I ignored Zuko, just as I had done for the last few weeks.
To say I was hurting would be an understatement. However, I was excited to learn that there were sightings reported of an Airbender helping in Omashu.
“Are you excited to be near the city?” Iroh’s jovial voice asked.
“Yes.” I said quickly. “I can’t wait to stretch my legs on the land.” Zuko scoffed at me.
“Don’t get too excited, you’re—“
“And I’m excited to try the delicacies of the Earth Kingdom.” I looked at Iroh with a huge smile on my face. “And I can’t wait to—“
“You’re staying on the ship.” Zuko growled, but I smiled at him.
“Like hell I’m staying on this ship.” I snapped as I looked at Zuko. “If I remember correctly, I am a waterbender and you’re a firebender. In these parts of the world, people are more inclined to trust me than you.” I motioned between us as I spoke. “If the Avatar or his partners are in the city, they will hide if they notice you. If they notice me, I’ll look just like anyone else in the city.” I smirked. “Like it or not, Prince Zuko, you need me.” Flicking my hair over my shoulder, I walked away from the two firebenders—one of whom looked proud of me and the other who looked astonished as I walked away.
A few hours later, the three of us--Iroh, Zuko, and I--stood in line waiting as the guards screened everyone at the gates. The three of us were dressed in Earth kingdom clothes, and we looked like we belonged in the city itself like the people around us. Zuko looked irate as we approached the guards at the gate.
“State your business.” The guard roughly said, but I gave him a big smile as I laced my arm through Zuko’s.
“My husband and I are returning home after spending time helping my brother with his cabbage farm nearby.” I patted Zuko’s arm for extra effect as I smiled up at him with closed eyes. The heart in my chest squeezed at the proximity of the Firebender, but I was still hurting from the way the Prince acted.
“Yes, the cabbages are doing so well this year that he needed a few extra set of hands.” Iroh said as he came and placed his arm around me. “It is always nice to help those in times of need.”
“Alright. Alright. Don’t hold up the line now.” The guard grumbled before the gates to the city slowly moved to let us in.
“Thank you!” I sweetly said as I slightly pulled Zuko by our interlaced arms through the gate. Once we were past the gate, I let go of Zuko’s arm as the bustling city around me captured my attention. People bustled about on their daily business while the aroma of the city smelled divine with herbs and spices filling the atmosphere. I felt like a kid all over again as I pointed at shop stand with a bunch of red sticks tied together.
“Oh! Look at that!” I quietly exclaimed with wild eyes. “What are those?” Iroh chuckled lightly at me as Zuko scowled.
“You act like you’ve never seen firecrackers before.” Zuko said with a roll of his eyes. “We aren’t here for--”
“I haven’t seen firecrackers before.” I said as I looked at another stand with a bunch of fresh fruits and vegetables. “I have never been to a fresh market like this before.” My eyes scanned over the various tea shops and clothing shops. “Restocking supplies stops don’t count. Those aren’t like this.” Turning to look at Iroh, I put on my best begging face. “Can I look around?”
“Of course. Here, take this and get you some things too.” Iroh smiled and lightly placed a small leather bag in my hand that made a clinking sound as it landed. “I’m glad someone can still see the world with fresh eyes.”
“No--”
“Yes, we are.” I grabbed Zuko’s hand and pulled him behind me. “How else do you expect to find him? He’s not going to be hiding where he feels safe from you.” I whispered to him before I stopped at a tea cart to order some tea. I scanned the crowd while I waited for my order to be finished while Zuko stood next to me in a grouchy mood.
“Thank you very much.” I said as I grabbed the two cups from the vendor and walked back to Zuko. “Here.” I said as I offered the cup to him without looking at him, and then I whispered through clenched teeth, “Try to blend in.” Begrudgingly, Zuko took the cup from me.
I didn’t let the angry Fire Prince ruin my wanderlust of the city as I looked around. There were minecarts traveling at rapid speeds through tracks that crossed the city and went all the way to the palace.
As I stopped to marvel at a piece of fabric at one of the shops, my hand reached out to touch a gorgeous green silk when I found myself standing across from a small green cart that was closer to the quieter side of Omashu. The Airbender stood in front of me flanked by two members of another Water Tribe--one female and the other male. He looked at Zuko without fear as he took an offensive stance. Blinking, I found myself standing in the street holding a green fabric lightly in my hand.
“Are you done browsing?” Zuko’s angry voice whispered to me, but the anger in his words slowly faded as he turned to look at me. “Your nose is bleeding.” It was at this moment that Iroh caught up to us, but he looked concerned as I wiped the small stream of blood coming from my nose. I narrowed my eyes at Zuko before I let out a frustrated groan.
“I don’t like you right now--” I whispered to him through clenched teeth, and Zuko’s face twisted in anger and hurt. Zuko started to say as I rubbed my face slightly before I sighed. “--But I don’t break pinky promises.” I said quietly as I looked around me for signs of the area around the cart I had seen.
“You saw something?” Zuko’s whisper went unanswered when I started walking towards the quieter part of the city. “A little communication would be nice.” He grumbled as he followed me through the street to a less crowded part of the market area.
“Just because I don’t break promises doesn’t mean I’m not still mad at you.” I casually said over my shoulder.
“I’m the bad guy because--”
“You’re the ‘bad guy’ for two reasons.” Turning on my heel quickly to face Zuko, he almost bumped into me, but he stopped himself in time. Iroh walked a few paces behind him and stopped when I had turned around. “One,” I held up my pointer finger as I spoke. “You ordered me to do something and that didn’t sit well with me. And, two,” I held up my second finger as I continued to speak. “You hurt my feelings.” Pointing a finger at the Fire Lord’s son, I shook my head slightly. “It’s not just because you didn’t want me to accompany you on Kyoshi’s Island.”
Zuko said nothing else as I turned a small corner and stopped. Looking to my right, I found the cart I had seen in my vision as a young boy in Airbender clothes followed by two others--a man roughly my age and a teenage girl--dressed in Water Tribe colors rushed from around the backside of the cart. Zuko wasted no time letting off a blast of fire towards them to draw their attention to us. The three of them looked surprised by our presence as Zuko took a few steps towards them with Iroh and I following him.
“This fricking guy?” The man dressed in blue exclaimed as he looked at us. “Again?” The man turned his attention to me before he spoke again, but with a smile on his face this time. “At least he brought a pretty lady with him this time.” I felt my cheeks burn slightly at the compliment the Water Tribe man had blatantly thrown my way.
“Go.” The Airbender said as he honed his vision on Zuko. The other two shared a look before they took off running. Zuko moved to step towards the Avatar, but Iroh placed his hand on Zuko’s shoulder before whispering something to him. Zuko pulled away from Iroh and towards the Avatar before roughly pulling off his outer robe and throwing it to the ground.
“I don’t need that to defeat this boy.” Zuko said as he aggressively approached the young Avatar, who stood in a defensive stance.
There was a brief moment where Iroh and I shared a look before Zuko rolled into the air and tried to kick the Airbender, but the Avatar dodged the kick. Zuko swiped his leg down as he swung a fist backward that the young boy ducked under, but the Airbend got surprised by a kick to the head. The head kick sent the brightly dressed monk to the floor before he scrambled backwards as the Firebender took small steps towards him. Using his element, the monk lifted himself from the ground then blocked Zuko’s kick before Zuko sent another successful kick his way.
The Avatar took the moment to take off running towards the busier marketplace, and the Fire Lord’s son ran after him. I gave Iroh a look as I followed behind, more casually than the other two, with Iroh. As we rounded around a corner, I saw an older woman repeatedly beating Zuko with a broom.
“How dare you hit that child?” She said as Zuko struggled to block her attacks before the Avatar disappeared into the clothing store I had been looking at earlier. Zuko wasted no time diving in behind the Airbender. I looked at Iroh with concern as we tried to follow the sound of the pair fighting.
When we finally caught up to the other two, they stood on opposite sides of a market cart exchanging words. Zuko looked surprised by something the Airbender said before he let out a large blast of fire at a nearby cabbage cart.
My heart sank to my stomach as Iroh and I shared a worried look while the people around scattered and hollered about a Firebender. Zuko’s fire quickly caught other stalls on fire, but Iroh and I caught up to the Prince as people pushed to run away from the fire.
“We must leave,” Iroh said as he grabbed the Prince by the shoulders. “Now!” Looking towards the other side of the market, I saw an army of Earthbenders arrive to look for the Firebender. Ducking into the crowd, the three of us blended in as we lightly jogged towards the main street towards the gate. I looked ahead towards the gates as several Earthbenders blocked the path. My face paled slighlty realizing we might not make it as one of the guards ordered the gates be closed.
“Go.” Iroh said. “You two must save yourselves.” I went to ask the same question as Zuko when Zuko and I were roughly shoved to the ground by the older Firebender.
“For the Fire Nation!” Iroh exclaimed as he blasted two large bursts of fire into the sky. My heart clenched in my chest as I realized what Iroh’s intentions were, and I pulled Zuko up from the ground as Iroh’s flames grew. Heat from the fire washed over the small surrounding area before Iroh shared a small nod with me as he ran the other way. Grabbing Zuko’s hand, I pulled him towards the gate as it rumbled to close.
“We need to go.” Zuko paused for a brief moment before he let me lead him towards the gates. Zuko kept looking forward without noticing that I slowed and stopped inside the city limits. Turning to face towards the direction Iroh ran towards, I walked the opposite direction out of the city as the stone walls around the city closed and separated Zuko and I. With determination in my eyes, I slipped away and blended into the panicked crowd as I made my way towards the palace.

A few days later, the weather outside was much warmer than the frigid air of the Water tribe, so I was happily barefoot on the deck of the boat as I wore my lighter water tribe dress. I was mindlessly practicing my bending on the deck when Zuko approached me. Guiding the small strand of water, Zuko was briefly surrounded by dancing water stream before I let the stream return back home to the sea around us. I smiled as I turned around to look at the Prince. He wore a short-sleeved black top that showed off his caramel skin and made him look like a badass.
“I will never tire of weather as beautiful as this.” I walked closer to Zuko before I asked, “Are you ready for me to finally win?” Zuko’s cocky grin made my heart race as I focused on the battle ahead.
I dodged the fireball Zuko threw at me before I used a wave of ice to slide towards him before swiping my leg to try and knock the firebender off of his feet. Anticipating my move, Zuko countered me by grabbing my ankle and sliding me the opposite way on my ice. He quickly let off three fireballs my way. I rolled to avoid the first one then put up an ice shield that provided enough protection for me to stand up and ninja-roll into a standing position and fire a ball of water to put out the other fireball.
I summoned a tornado of water and centered it around Zuko. Gracefully dancing around the tornado, my limbs flowed in the air like the element I was born to bend as Zuko rushed out of the water devil. I twirled in a low circle as the water tornado changed into wave crashing into Zuko and knocking him over then I froze him in place. I was focusing on the ice hold when Iroh loud tea slurping sounded in my ear. Letting out a yelp, I lost concentration on my hold of Zuko and fell on my butt. I flicked the hair that had fallen over my face back where it belonged then brushed myself off before I stood up.
“Lesson learned--” I said after connecting with the ground again as Zuko leg swiped me and straddled me as his hand wrapped around my throat. “Don’t get distracted.” Zuko smiled victoriously for a moment before I cockily smiled at him.
“You really do like this position huh?” Zuko’s eyes widened at my brash comment and his grip faltered, which gave me the opportunity to buck my hips upwards. Throwing Zuko offbalance, I quickly grabbed his wrists as I flipped us over and straddled him before leaning down to whisper in his ear.
“I like this one better.” The intoxicating smell of rainwater and moss overwhelmed my senses, and I struggled slightly to keep my words even. Smiling victoriously as I leaned back and stood up. “I say I won this one.” I offered my hand to help the Firebender off of the group. With a face as red as a tomato, he accepted my hand to help him stand up.
“I definitely won that one.” Zuko said as he smoothed down his shirt. “I had you on the ground first.”
“I technically had you on the ground until Iroh worked on your behalf.” I smirked as Zuko rolled his eyes at me. “Can’t you just let me have this one victory?”
“No.” I rolled my eyes and sighed dramatically.
“Men and their fragile egos.” I said as I placed the back of my hand slightly against my forehead before I leaned slightly to one side. “How do they survive anything?” I laughed at myself as I straightened up and looked at Iroh who had a huge grin on his face as he looked at Zuko and me.
“Look at the two of you getting along so well.” Iroh beamed, and Zuko immediately froze beside me as he shook his head.
“She is to be my wife.” Zuko said in an even tone despite the blush on his face as he avoided looking at me. “It is my duty to get along with her.”
For some odd reason, the way Zuko said that hurt my heart, but I put a smile on my lips.
“Why don’t the two of you join me for dinner this evening?” Iroh never stopped beaming as he looked between us. “I heard the chef’s have gotten a fresh catch from the local fishery.” I bowed to the older firebender in appreciation.
“I’d love to.” I smiled as I straightened then excused myself to go bathe and change.
A few hours later, I was seated around a large wooden table with Iroh sitting across from me and Zuko to my right. The conversation was light in the room as we all spoke of how the day had been and other casual conversation. A light knock on the door sounded, and several Fire Nation members walked in to deliver a plate of fish to the three of us.
“Thank you, Shisam,” I said with a smile as the fish was placed down in front of me. “How was the fishery?” Shisam gave me a soft smile back before he bowed.
“The fishery was the fishery,” He said lightly, and I let out a small chuckle. “But I did hear that the Avatar is on Kyoshi Island.” The sound of a fork hitting a plate sounded as the words came out of the crew member’s mouth, and I didn’t need to look to know the fork belonged to Zuko.
“Set course for Kyoshi’s Island right away, and ready the rhinos.” Zuko stood up and began to walk away from the table as his long robes flowed behind him.
“Are you going to finish the fish?” Iroh asked, stopping Zuko mid stride.
“I was going to finish it later.” Zuko said as he grabbed his plate of fish and left. I chuckled at Iroh’s disappointment before sliding my plate over to him.
“You can have mine.” I gave the older man a smile. “I want to join them this time.” Iroh frowned at me.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” His face twisted in concern. “It will not be pretty. Zuko is liable to burn the entire village down to get the Avatar.”
“I won’t lie and say that I think it’s the best idea, but I have a feeling it’s important for me to go.” Iroh nodded in agreement.
“You may be right in that, but I also worry because the Kyoshi warriors are exceptional at fighting.” I nodded as I heard Iroh’s concern in his voice.
“Perhaps I shall see if Zuko needs me.” I bowed to Iroh, who smiled at me.
“Whether the Prince admits it or not, he does need you.” Iroh's soft words were spoken as I reached the threshold of the door, but I didn’t say anything as I walked away. I slowly walked towards Zuko’s room, but the man himself came rushing out of his room dressed in a warrior’s uniform. I had just opened my mouth to speak when he started talking.
“You are to stay on the boat.” Zuko ordered as I fell in stride with him as he made haste towards the deck. “I do not need anyone getting in my way of capturing the Avatar.” I frowned at his words.
“I am—“
“That’s an order.” Zuko turned to look at me as he practically growled, and I narrowed my eyes as I stepped into his personal space.
“I am your fiancée,” I said in a low growl back. “I do—“
“You are a waterbender that my father decided to place by my side,” Zuko’s voice was angry as he turned around to face me as we arrived on deck, and it drew the attention of the crew. “The only thing you’re good at is being a training partner.” My heart seized in my chest as I narrowed my eyes and clenched my fists.
“The only thing you’re good at is being an asshole.” My words were low enough so only Zuko could hear them. “You are so caught up in catching the Avatar that—“
“Maybe I’ve been playing into your fantasies for too long.” Zuko’s shout made the world stop around me. “You are nothing short of a distraction and—“ The sound of my palm connecting with Zuko’s cheek was enough to send me over the edge.
“Perhaps it was me who was playing into your fantasies, Prince Zuko.” His formal title came out of my mouth like it left a bitter taste on my tongue as I seethe in anger.
“You are nothing more than a lost Prince trying to earn his daddy’s respect.” I no longer whispered the words, and I gave no care to whoever was listening. I saw only red as I looked at the Prince, who was now staring at me in shock. “You want the respect of a man who has never ever given a shit about you and has only sought to destroy who you are.” Shaking in rage, I continued.
“But if you want to call one of the few people aboard this ship who actually believes in you a distraction,” I narrowed my eyes as tears blurred my visions. “Then you have truly lost your damn mind.” Turning on my heel, I saw a blurry vision of Iroh as I walked away from the Prince. “I hope you get your fucking Avatar.” I yelled as I opened the door to the cabins and walked inside before tears fell down my face and I quietly added, “Maybe then I’ll actually mean something to you.”
I paid no mind as the boat started moving again within an hour, nor did I pay any mind to the knock on my door shortly afterwards. The pencil in my hand worked on the sketch on the paper in front of me, and I didn’t answer as another knock, louder than the first, sounded on my door.
“Y/N,” Zuko’s voice sounded from the other side of the door. “Open the door.” I rolled my eyes and ignored him as I continued to draw the picture of a waterbender. A couple of minutes passed of silence before Zuko knocked again. I practically growled as I put the pencil down and flung open the door to see the shocked expression on Zuko’s face. Without saying anything to him, I slammed the door in his face.
“Consider your order followed.” I growled through the door as I sat back down in my chair. Seconds passed before Zuko’s footsteps moved away from the door and I heard his door across the hall close. The organ responsible for my heartbeat felt dead as I crossed my arms across my chest.
Zuko’s words earlier had hurt me deeply, and I was too hurt to talk to him right now.

Thankfully, the crew and Zuko let me rest till very late in the afternoon the next day. As I sat at my desk brushing my hair, I stared at the firebender I had been drawing before the Fire Nation rudely drug me away yesterday. I had been busy adding a small amount of shading to the picture, and the small firebender I had drawn looked more alive now than it did when I started. A smile subconsciously found its way to my lips as I reminisced on my conversation with a certain firebender last night.
I will honor my agreement to marry you. Zuko’s words echoed in my head as I lightly touched my lips. He had kissed me last night, and, by the way the butterflies in my stomach fluttered, I may not ever recover from the kiss as my cheeks tinted a deep shade of pink.
Walking out of my room, I knocked on Zuko’s door, but there was no reply from within. I shrugged my shoulders as I walked down to Iroh’s door and knocked gently. Iroh’s friendly voice welcomed me inside the room, and I smiled as I walked in and greeted the older Firebender.
“Ah, Y/N, please have a seat. Would you like some tea?” He asked with a smile as he held up the tea pot. “I got some lovely ginsei tea from the last supply run we did.”
“Actually, I was wondering if you knew where Zuko was.” Iroh gave me a knowing smile as I asked my question.
“Ah, yes,” Iroh said as he poured three cups of tea. “He is in his prayer room.” Turning around, Iroh handed me two cups of tea. “He has specifically requested that no one disturb him until they have news of the Avatar.” The smile on Iroh’s lips had me furrow my eyebrows in confusion as I grabbed the cups, then I realized why Iroh was giving me two teacups.
“You want me to tell Zuko we have no news about the Avatar?” Iroh lightly laughed at my question and handed me a rolled map.
“What better way to receive unwanted news than with a beautiful woman bringing you tea?” I rolled my eyes as my cheeks turned a deep shade of red.
“If only the young prince saw it that way.” I laughed, careful not to spill the tea. Iroh smiled a knowing smile at me.
“Besides, perhaps, the two of you might be able to talk.” I rolled my eyes at Iroh’s attempt to set Zuko and I up on a date.
“I’m going to tell him you sent me there for a date.” I teased the older man who laughed at my statement.
“I am not the one who called it a date.” Iroh teased back before he turned around to hold a small tea tray towards me. “Then take this tea tray.” I rolled my eyes and stuck out my tongue at the Firebender before setting the two cups on the tray and taking the offered tray from his hands. “Good luck on your date.” Iroh laughed as I rolled my eyes and left the room.
My heart thudded against the bones of my ribs as I walked towards the set of double doors that separated the hall from the prayer room. I felt nervous as I shifted the tray to rest against my right forearm as I raised my left hand and gently knocked on the door.
“I said to only come if there’s news of the Avatar.” Zuko’s calm voice came from the other side of the door. I took a deep breath before I answered.
“Even if I have tea?” My voice was light as I carefully opened the door. Zuko sat cross legged on a small stool in front of four lit candles that sat on a table. The candle flames grew then dimmed as Zuko sat with his back to me, but he turned to look at me as I gave him a warm smile.
“I was clear when I told Un—“
“And Iroh was the one who sent me to tell you the news.” Zuko’s eyebrow raised itself as I looked around the room to set the tray down. “But, you must remain calm with the news.”
“Uncle always said that a great leader keeps their cool.” Zuko calmly spoke as he turned his attention back to the candles in front of him.
We shall see how calm you remain. I stood there holding the tray of tea before I straightened my shoulders and smiled.
“We have no idea where the Avatar is.” The flames of the candles erupted into larger flames that reached the ceiling as he turned around with anger.
“What?”
“Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.” I clicked my tongue and shook my head before I took some water from one of the cups and put out the candles. “You’re lucky to have me around with that temper.” I smirked as the Firebender struggled to calm down. Now that the candles were out, I carefully walked over to set the tray down on the table.
Zuko was dressed in a loose robe that stopped above his knees. I had yet to see him dressed so casually before, and it was sending my heart into a whirlwind as I tried my best not to stare at the handsome man as I turned back around.
I shook my head as the thought crossed my mind, but I straightened up to give the prince a smile.
“Your uncle wanted me to deliver the news because,” I dropped my voice to imitate Iroh. “What better way to receive unwanted news than with tea delivered by a pretty lady.” I let out a light laugh before I turned around to find Zuko’s ears had reddened. “I told him that you might not see it as such.” A friendly smile was on my lips, but my heart hammered in my chest.
“Uncle has a way of exaggerating things.” Zuko said in a calm voice before he looked away. “He’s not wrong about the tea though.” My cheeks reddened as I looked away from the Prince. “Let me see the map.” Zuko took the rolled up map from my hand and unrolled it. I could see a black line drawn from several random points on the map as I looked over Zuko’s shoulder.
Had that been a compliment? I didn’t linger on the thought as I looked back up at Zuko.
“I couldn’t help but notice there’s two cups on the tray.” Zuko’s eyes brieflylooked towards the tea tray before he continued looking at the map. My ears reddened, but I tried to play it off with a laugh.
“Perhaps he thought you’d like some company while you drink your tea.” Zuko smirked at me as he rolled the map back up again. “It looks like the Avatar has been all over.” I said as I nodded my head towards the rolled up map, and Zuko sighed heavily.
“How are we supposed to find him if we don’t know where he is.” Frowning slightly, I walked up and squeezed his shoulder lightly.
“We will find him, Zuko.” I smiled at him. “I know it.” He stared at me briefly as if I had two heads. “Matter of fact, let me see the map.” He gave me the map as I had asked and I unrolled it. Scanning my eyes over the map, I was drawn to a small island in the earth kingdom. Pointing to it, I asked Zuko what the name of the island was.
“That’s Kyoshi’s Island.” Zuko said as he looked at it. “Nothing significant other than it was Avatar Kyoshi’s birth place.” I blinked at him.
“I have a feeling that we might find the Avatar there.” I casually shrugged as I rolled the map back up. “Giving his random path, he could be marking things off of a bucket list or something.”
Zuko and I stood there awkwardly in silence before I cleared my throat.
“Well I’ll be go—“
“Do you want—“ Zuko and I started at the same time, and I let out a laugh.
“We need to stop doing that.” I laughed, and Zuko let out a small chuckle.
“Do you want to have some tea with me?” Zuko asked before I could finish my sentence, and his cheeks turned red as spoke.
“I thought you weren’t to be disturbed until there’s news of the Avatar?” I teased as I raised an eyebrow at the Firebender to cover the heart pounding in my chest. “I’d hate to disturb you with no news.” Zuko rolled his eyes at me, but the corners of his mouth raised a bit.
“Who said you were disturbing me?”
Mentally his words have me screaming, but physically I tried to keep calm as I gave him a smile.
“As long as I’m not a bother,” I bowed my head slightly before I looked into the golden eyes that were looking at me. “I’d love to have some tea with you.”
A few hours later, Zuko had me in tears.
“It’s seriously not that funny.” Zuko said with irritation as his ears betrayed his embarrassment as I held my stomach with laughter. Wiping tears from my eyes, I took deep breaths to try and calm my fit of laughter.
“Oh, trust me, it is that funny.” A small laugh left my lips again before I smiled at the Prince. “I just can’t imagine you stuck in a tree dangling..” Another fit of laughter threatened to bubble out of me as I spoke. “It’s almost as funny as the time I got my tongue stuck to the ice cap back home.” Zuko and I looked at each other before we both started laughing at the same time.
“How did you get your tongue stuck to the ice cap?” Zuko asked as his laughter calmed down. An easy smile rested on his lips as he leaned against the wall of the prayer room with his hands behind his head. I laid on my back as I looked at him from my spot on the floor.
“Five year-old me thought it was a brilliant idea to lick the ice cap after Mayuh had done it and said it tastes like sushi.” I laughed at the stupidity of my younger self. Wiping tears from my eyes, I smiled at the fond memory. Zuko’s face scrunched up as he looked disgusted.
“You believed it would taste like sushi?” I laughed before reiterating that I was five years old at the time. A comfortable silence fell between us as I happily laid on the floor by the casually sitting Prince. I looked over to admire him as he stared blankly at the liquid in the cup between his hands. His eyes swam with such uncertainty that it broke my heart.
“Do you remember the dream I told you about the koi fish--the moon and ocean sprits?” My quiet words left my mouth as I looked at the Prince. Blinking slowly, Zuko slightly shifted his attention to me.
“Yes, and I remember the story about them coming to be mortal for a day.” Zuko’s eyebrow raised and I knew as he opened his mouth that he was going to ask me a question.
“I started having those dreams as far back as I could remember.” I looked up at the ceiling above me as I spoke. “I dreamt about one of the fish--the moon fish--dying during some dreams. Other dreams were me climbing into the pool to swim with the spirits with a young girl with snow white hair.” Zuko stayed quiet as I talked.
“When I was ten, my father said he had business to discuss with the Northern Water Tribe, and he would be gone for a few months. I begged Father to take me with him.” I let out a small chuckle at the memory. “And I mean I begged. I did all my schoolwork for that year and the next because he worried about my schooling.”
“Dad finally agreed, and I was ecstatic to arrive at the Northern Water Tribe. I met the King’s daughter, Princess Yue, and she looked just like the girl in my dreams.” Taking a small strand of hair between my fingers, I twisted the strand around my fingers as I sighed.
“I haven’t been completely honest with you, Zuko.” The firebender was as calm as ever as he patiently waited for me to continue. “Father and I stayed long enough for the day to come that the Moon and Ocean spirits would spend an evening as mortals among us.
“I followed Princess Yue to the sacred spring and was in absolute awe at the sight of the koi swimming in their water. I remember Yue put her hand in the water and the white koi playfully swam to her, so I did the same. The Ocean spirit came to greet me before the two koi playfully swam between our hands.” The memory made tears come to my eyes as I smiled fondly at the memory. “I could hardly believe something like that was possible.”
“We returned home shortly after, but I was never the same after that interaction.” My chest felt heavy as I prepared to let Zuko in on a secret I had been keeping from him. “Ever since I returned from that trip, I’ve had these dreams or visions that are so vivid and feel so real that I have to question if it happened or if I imagined it.” My words were slightly unsteady as I continued.
“When I was ten, I had a dream that began seeing Mayuh laying on a pile of wood with her hands folded neatly over her chest. She looked peaceful as I approached to tell her my final goodbye. I remember reaching out to her and touching the cold shoulder of my grandmother as she laid in bed. My touch caused her to fall back slightly and I screamed as I saw dried blood from her nose and lifeless eyes staring back at me.” I closed my eyes at the memory. “Mother had assured me that it was just a nightmare.” I let out a bitter laugh. “She heard my scream three weeks later as I found my grandmother dead.”
“My best friend died when I was fifteen after being chronically ill for years.” Turning to look at Zuko, I bit my lip as his golden eyes looked at me with sadness.
“What are you saying, Y/N?” Zuko asked quietly as I looked back to the hair between my fingers.
“Do not be upset about what I am about to say.”
“You’re not about to tell me I have died in your dreams, right?” I let out a small laugh at Zuko’s question.
“No. You didn’t die.” I sighed as I closed my eyes tightly. “I dreamt about the light we saw in the sky and I heard your voice say something about the Avatar before I saw the Airbender standing in your room.” I heard a sharp intake of breath from the surprisingly calm man near me. “I had a vision of Avatar Kyoshi’s Shrine happen that same night.”
“Are you asking me to believe your dreams are predicting the future?” Zuko’s words sounded dubious as he spoke, and I let out a bitter laugh.
“Absolutely not.” I said. “Life just has a strange way of making the visions happen.” I shrugged my shoulders. “I hope some of them are just dreams.” Swallowing the lump in my throat, I tried to give Zuko a smile, but he looked at me with concerned eyes.
“There’s more that you aren’t saying.” Zuko’s words were quiet, and I tried to keep my face stoic while he stared at me.
“Hey,” Zuko’s soft words was accompanied by the soft caress of my face with a gentle hand. Forcing me to look at him, Zuko gave me the softest smile as he looked into my eyes. “You can talk to me.” My lungs ceased to work as I mulled over telling Zuko about my dream. “As long as you’re not about to tell me I died in your dream.” Zuko said in a slightly joking manner, but I didn’t find it funny as I replied.
“I drowned.” My words were softly spoken in a volume barely audible to me as I blankly stared at something other than Zuko’s eyes as the flashbacks of the dream washed over me. “It ended with me drowning.” Silence greeted my heavily said words only briefly before a gentle hand moved the hair out of my face. My eyes focused back to the golden orbs looking back at me with so much emotion, but his facial expression held determination.
“You won’t drown while I’m around.” Zuko’s honest words made my heart jump in my chest.
“Pinky promise?” My voice sounded small as I held out my left pinky to him. “It is against the law to break a pinky promise.”
“A pinky promise?” Zuko’s ears reddened at my suggestion. “What are we? Children?”
“No. We are soon-to-be twenty year-olds who still believe in the binding magic of a pinky promise.” I tilted my head and slightly raised my eyebrow as I smiled at Zuko, offering my pinky again with a small bend of the finger at him.
“On one condition,” Zuko started, and I raised an eyebrow with curiosity. “You tell me about any visions or dreams you have.” I nodded in agreement. With cheeks tinted red, Zuko wrapped his right pinky tightly around my left one.
“I pinky promise that you won’t drown while I’m around.” A wide smile grew on my lips as I tightened my pinky around his too.
“I pinky promise to tell you about any dreams or visions I have.” I repeated then a yawn escaped my lips as I slowly moved to sit up.
“Thank you for having tea with me.” I said as I gathered the cups and the tray. “I enjoyed spending time with you.” Zuko’s face was red as the earnest words effortlessly left my lips.
“Are you free for another training session soon?” Zuko looked at me after he stood up and handed me the tray from the floor. “I feel well enough to train some more.” A smile rested on my face as I looked at the golden eyes staring at me.
“Do you think I’d miss the opportunity to beat you?” Zuko’s cocky smile greeted me. “Never.”
