Let me preface this by saying that it’s very difficult for me to have any kind of intelligent conversation about family dynamics in Thai dramas—especially historical ones—when their views on family and filial piety are so different from how I’ve been raised. That being said, I simply refuse to believe this narrative is trying to frame Phob’s mother as someone who loves her son. Her attempting to remove Phob from the situation is understandable. What’s not understandable is her beating her son and continually telling him he is the ground and Tin is the sky and he shouldn’t pull Tin down to his level.

Nuan as a character has been shown to be incredibly loyal to the monarchy, frequently valuing them even over her and her son’s own best interests, and in a show whose entire plot revolves around attempting to overthrow the monarchy, I have to think this was intentional. Over and over again, Nual has chosen the monarchy over her son—both in the past and present timelines. She hasn’t worked for them in over a decade and yet still sees her son as lesser than Tin despite the fact that he now has rank and status of his own.

My guess is that all of this is building up to Nual coming into knowledge about the revolution and being forced to make a choice: tell the monarchy or protect her son. And I think she’s going to tell the monarchy because the narrative has shown us time and time again that given the choice, she will always choose them.
