in a ritual context transgresion in myth is about potency and the relationship between diety and devotee once you turn it into a world sweeping epic tale all these acts of transgression in myth are devorced from their magico religious context and become something to be judged and then you end up with philosophy and other mistakes
spiritual selection, a type of spiritual discernment beyond lazy inspiration
kant once self-ironically warned that the ''decision'' which was "pure morality" "by which as a touchstoneone must test the moral content of every action" could be rendered "doubtful" "only by philosophers". in "common human reason" it was "long since decided by habitual use, like the diffrence between the right and left hand, as it were". accordingly, the human would, "as it were" by nature, if not shun , at least be able to recognise, the terrible crime as a crime. - from ‘freedom to fail:: heidegger’s anarchy’ p. p22-23
How should we understand a list of 'long-lived people' that begins in the most ordinary manner, drawn from censuses, with Lucius Cornelius of Placentia (100 years old) via the slave Faustus (136) and Herodotus' Arganthonios (150) to the Sibyl and her prophecy that seems to underpin the Roman Secular Games? An ancient reader might well have found the story of the Sibyl to be the culmination of the list, whereas for us it is the point at which any hope of credulity vanishes utterly, though we might have been prepared to concede some credence to the occasional centenarian. And if that appears patronising, consider how we 'rationally' consider what might be possible technologically 'one day' (with science, 'once upon a time', the realm of the fantastic and incredible, has moved into the future after all). The boundaries of rationality and the location of the fabulous have shifted dramatically since antiquity and if this sort of material is to offer a starting point for exploration it is that sort of issue and methodology that would be most promising. if there is no future where is the realm of the fantastic do all realms contract and merge or does the fantastic emerge in a new realm
The problem is and always was that the rituals worked, and the coupling of church and state to keep the power only in the hands that be, as offensive as that is, led to everyone becoming dumber and less attentive to the unknown and unclassifiable aspects of worship.
magic only becomes distinct from religion when those with temporal power seek to control the spiritual world and dictate spiritual experience The witch is a symbol that there are religious approaches that those with power try to exclude and diminish because their existence, let alone their enactment, are a threat to authority1
An initiatory magical system isn’t simply a grab-bag of random materials. Each symbol, practice, and correspondence relates to all the others to produce a coherent and balanced structure—a mesocosm, to use a bit of technical language, that mediates between the macrocosm and the microcosm
We are beginning to realise that our science in the western world is best defined as a certain state of consciousness and if you change that stage of conciousness -if you broaden it- the more reality leaks into ones life and that reality is not confined to the empirical level of knowledge. It is difficult to deal with these obviously murky terms. “Reality” I guess, is whatever there is to be known as we become aware of it. “Consciousness” is that which becomes aware of it. -Theodore Roszak
Bataille’s perverse mysticism “looks forward to the Overman rather than backwards to the primitive,” and yet, both are
The author points to what he sees as the acceptance of objective science in practice but not in spirit. He says that the important message of science is that in the defining of a new source of truth which demands revision of ethical premises and a total break with the animist tradition. Our values are rooted in animism and are at odds with objective knowledge and truth. This jarring and isolating revelation places value judgments within the hands of man himself. Monod believes that objective truth and the theory of values cannot be separated “because the very definition of “true” knowledge reposes in the final analysis upon an ethical postulate”
Knowing from the experience of dreams that he himself seemed able to wander away from himself, he thought in course of time that other living things were somehow double, and the world around him came to be occupied, not merely with things that were alive, but with other selves of these things, that could remain in them or leave them at will. The gods do dream too
the world, the universe of things that exist, is too complex to be systematised... too many aberrant things that the violence of forcing them into a unifying framework fails
I don't know if you can harmonize Jake Stratton Kent and chaos reallyChaos magick has an element of burning bridges by paradigm shifting. Jake Stratton Kent and other similar people generally function by building up relationships with specific sets of spirits over time(edited)If you wanted to build a relationship with spirits over time with chaos magic, you're a bit constrained to either Hindu-style monism, where your images change but you think of it as the same reality, or super ultra polytheism where there are hundreds of gods and you paradigm shift into their respective pantheonsBut picking a single fixed set of spirits and working with them consistently seems not to jibe with the chaos view(edited)
maybe a comprehendable set of spirits have modes of existance only comprehensible by ontological shifting i.e. you cannot comprehend them in their wholeness from a fixed perspective
