why is punpun unable to help aiko?

he genuinely loves aiko and wants to help her, but he is unable to actually do anything due to several reasons:

-he is deeply traumatized/broken in his own way - he can barely 'save' himself, let alone anybody else, and helping aiko requires strength that he doesn't have.

- he romanticizes 'saving' her rather than really understanding her - when he sees her again after years of separation, he projects his obsessive fantasies onto her instead of seeing her struggles clearly. his obsession with aiko blinds him to how much pain she is in, and he shuts her out instead of communicating honestly. he wants to run away with her, but he's oblivious to how that's not very realistic. he should have helped her face her abusive past instead of running away from everything completely.

-punpun is written to be painfully human and as a reflection of how messy people can be. he avoids responsibility, leaving others like aiko (or sachi) to carry the weight of his choices. he's written this way so that readers see both the cruelty and tragedy in how people deal with pain. it's not that punpun doesn't know how to care, it's that he doesn't know how to without destroying himself.
