the sides as dragon species from how to train your dragon !!
this is a long list because i have so many thoughts about the symbolism behind the dragon behaviour and how it links to the side's roles and personality.
patton - stormcutter
stormcutters are known for their high emotional intelligence and caring nature. despite being solitary dragons, they are incredibly maternal, being shown specifically with cloudjumper and baby hiccup, almost rocking him to calm him down. these dragons hold the ability to understand and sense people's intent, or if they are threats or not. they are protective, powerful, caring, and can sense motivation, all traits that align with the 'morality' role of patton.
logan - deadly nadder or a speedstinger
the deadly nadder is incredibly fast and highly intelligent, even being able to use tools. they have an impressive sense of smell and hearing, making up for their blindspot by their observant nature. they are known for their vanity, grooming and cleaning their scales. because of the combination of intelligence and vanity, it makes me think of logan. the blindspot is also interesting, and makes me think alot of logan and his perception of things around him.
speedstingers are the second option for logan, mostly due to them being the most realistic dragon, being described as the 'velociraptor of the dragon world'. they are fast, cunning, and intelligent, having the ability the coordinate with a pack to attack. they are incredibly strategic dragons. alongside all of this, they are shown activly evolving, gaining webbed feet to run on water. i would also find it really funny to nickname him brainfreeze because of the paralysis their venom causes but. anyway.
roman - deathsong or deadly nadder
there isn't much reasoning behind the deathsong association aside from the fact they are known to be beautiful and are 'performers'. though, the unstable mood baby deathsongs demonstrate is similar to roman's emotional instability shown within some of the episodes. also the idea of him trapping dragons in amber to watch him perform is really funny and i might make him a deathsong just for that
the deadly nadder is constantly concerned about is appearance, grooming and preening, desiring to maintain the luster of their scales. incredibly loyal, but can be easily manipulated from one side to another, as shown by stormfly's behaviour with heather. these traits are reminiscent of roman's need to look perfect, and the way he was manipulated by janus and quickly switched sides from one opinion to the next. nadders also remind me of parrots and peacocks n they remind me of roman so
virgil - skrill
the skrill is one of the most feared dragons, being aggressive and borderline untrainable. they are independent and stubborn, holding grudges for long periods of time. their loyalty can only be truly gained when a trainer risks their life for the skrill. these traits are all extremely similar to virgils story and personality, being elusive and aggressive until all the sides risk their life to save him from ducking out. also they are lightning based and like one of the most emo dragons in the series,,
honorable mention to the flightmare, i like the 'paralysing with fear' thing and i feel like that does fit virgil, but they are a bit too flighty to fully fit him imo
janus - changewing or deathsong
changewings mimic their environment, being incredibily agile and fast. they hunt using stealth. they are naturally curious, mimicking things out of interest. they also hold the ability to hypnotise dragons and humans, much more powerful than themselves. despite their territorial aggression and constant hunting behaviour, these dragons are seen to be incredibly maternal, defending their eggs and even being seen taking care of vikings like their own. they match janus' physical traits the most, presenting as some of the more 'vindictive' dragons in the series despite the fact they can be caring and trained through gaining their trust. changewings will work in packs for common goals, something seen within the darksides working together for a shared goal, despite all being not very social people. i see changewing and i yell janus
deathsongs are the most fitting for the 'deceit' element of janus' role. deathsongs are deceptively beautiful, bright colours and their siren-like melody attracting prey. they are described as being hypnotic and brutal. these dragons can even learn songs of other dragons and mimic the calls of other dragons, using this to hunt. they are solitary and driven by their own motivations of food. as explored within rtte, deathsongs are 'selfish', cannibalising other dragons; however, this is just them eating to survive. it fits janus' motive and technique.
remus - scauldron
similar to a kraken, the scauldron's nature mirrors remus' own. scauldrons are one of the few dragons known to prey on other dragons, invading fishing bays or other species habitats and picking off those species to near-extincition. despite their reputation of being 'cruel', they possess a healing ability; their venom, which can kill a human within 24 hours, is the only known antidote to blue oleander. these dragons are stated to be fearless and without conscious, but they can be loyal once trust is gained. i also find it interesting because both changewings and scauldrons rely on their pods to survive and hunt,,,
honorable mention to the cavern crasher, who invades and pushes dragons out of their homes, behaviour similar to remus. but i dont. like them. so.
anyway! that is my list, some i don't know which to pick so if anyone has any opinions i would love them
Been playing a lot of pokemon (NOT jealously at all) and i really have taken with this Trubbish that i lovingly named Dukey after this Duke. I think Remus would like his own Dukey. Quick doodle off of that idea
