Under the sea!
Shurifin pretends to be a regular inphernal but is actually a merphernal, spawning in the ocean depths and leaving to join land to discover inphernal life and explore. He keeps his fishy self a secret and only goes out to swim and transform when alone of with vinesplash.
He is water reactant but only on the parts that he's splashed on. Good luck trying to find out his secret and weird habits!
worked extremely hard to not accidentally copy a certain popular mythology based au with this interp im so sorry if i did </3

[ Shurifin- I mean- Shuriken was out by the sea, idly staring off out at the ocean... He seemed deep in thought. The totally not suspicious inphernal looked left and right making sure that he was alone before approaching closer to the shoreline.... Before hesitating and turning back around. ]
[ What was he so scared for? It wasn't even that bad! He just wanted to go for a swim! But at the same time.. He didn't wanna risk being caught. ]
~ Footsteps crunched softly from behind him, boots upon sand. ~
~ A weathered Inphernal approached the shoreline as well, casting a sideways glance to Shuriken. He wore a long coat a green so dark it was nearly black, with an off-white shirt and pants loosely tucked into his stained boots. A tricorne hat with a bright red feather shadowed the majority of his face, leaving only his mouth and the gleam of his eyes in the moonlight to discern his expression. ~
Hm. What’s a little thing like ye doin out here? Don’t think I’ve ever seen someone willingly near the water. Specially not at this time o’ day.
~ He wasn’t suspicious, just curious of the strange Inphernal by the seaside. It was unusual, definitely. But he hadn’t come here to harass random strangers. ~
[ Shuriken almost jumped, hearing the voice of someone next to him. It was quiet... Nobody came out here so late. He knew that he wasn't alone! He was glad that he chose not to go out to sea now. The ninja cleared his throat as he adjusted his hood and posture trying to pretend that this very sailor looking stranger hadn't scared him half to death. ]
OH! Ahem- excuse me. I just... Er.. Came out here for some time off, I suppose. It's pretty nice at night you know?
[ He came up with a pretty good reason, crossing his arms and turning to watch the waves yet again. It was a good thing that he hadn't gotten closer.. The last thing he wanted to do was to be snatched up by some sailor or fisherman and put in a tank or something. Merfolk were just myths after all, no inphernal knew of their actual existence... It was an oceanic secret. ]
What about you? What are you here for? I mean- you certainly look like you belong at sea!
~ He chuckled softly, pausing a few paces away from the shore and pulling off his boots. Rolling up his pants to his knees, he waded into the water and looked out at the sea. ~
Aye, it sure is nice. It’s always quiet, too, given that most ‘phernals can’t swim.
~ He grins at the water, the fang poking out the side of his mouth glinting as he turns to study Shuriken. ~
Made meself a little habit, ye could say. I like to come out to the shore when our ship is docked an’ look for me friend.
Haha.. Yeah, its kinda sad nobody really wants to. The sean is so vast. Taking a swim is fun once you try!
[ He tilted his head, taking an instinctive step back as he waded into the ocean. Sure he had sandals on and pants... But one splash was really all it took. The inphernal seemed kind enough but.. You never know with sailors, they love a good story and an even bigger catch of the day. ]
... Friend? Are you looking for someone?
I come by here often so I could help see if I've seen them?
[ Shuriken rubbed his arm, staring at the mans fang for a few seconds before looking back up at his face. ]
Mmm. Honestly, I haven’t swam in a while… it’s been too cold fer that up until recently!
~ He chuckles, turning back to the sea. He hums a tune as he waits, scanning the water calmly and occasionally tapping the surface. ~
Oh, me friend ain’t a ‘phernal. I dunno, sometime they come ‘round, sometimes they don’t. We’ll have to wait an’ see.
~ He shrugs, shifting his weight slightly. This Inphernal sure was awkward. Or maybe just nervous, he mused. It’s not like he was the most friendly-looking person in the world, so he couldn’t blame him. ~
[ Not an inphernal? Thats an.. Odd thing to say. He stared as he kept watching the stranger feel around in the water, getting more and more nervous and a little confused. Who else would come up to the shoreline at this hour? Shuriken might be overthinking this but.. Could it be that.. ]
Not an inphernal? Thats.. Odd. I mean- I'm not sure who else would even come to the shoreline at this time unless it was like a... Seagull or something?
Its not like your friend lives in the ocean, right?
[ Well he didn't mean for that to come out, the ninja quickly bit his tongue immediately starting to ramble a little. God Shuri you were always so bad at lying! He should just leave... Going for a swim wasn't worth this much risk! ]
Merphernals are just myths. They can't actually be real! Unless they.. Are? I've sure heard things, thats for sure. Hahah..!
~ A lemon shark practically tackled him before he could finish his sentence. He grinned and managed to keep his balance, wrapping his arms around it and giving it some hearty head pats. ~
Ehehe, hey there, me hearty! Missed me, eh?
~ He let go of the shark, leaving it to swim idly in the shallows. He was very happy that his friend actually managed to show up, and he turned to Shuriken and gestured to it. ~
This ‘ere is Invictus. Love this idiot.
An’ why would ye bring up merphernals…? What, ye think I made friends with Crossbow o’ the Sea?
~ He cackled at the notion. This blighter sure was a funny one, he’d admit that. ~
[ Shurifin let out a breath of relief as the shark came up, immediately relaxing and settling down. Right... Of course... It was a fish. Of course it was. Merphernals arent real, why would he ever think such a thing right?! He relaxed a little now that he knew that he wasn't about to be caught red handed. ]
Oh! A shark.. Of course! I forgot- ahem- I'm sorry, I guess I have a rather big imagination! I just dont usually hear about people having sharks as friends I suppose?
[ He gave a small smile deciding to play into the joke, rubbing the back of his neck trying to hide his now relaxed nerves. Shuriken had nothing to fear. Hopefully. ]
Well, no! That'd be crazy! I just meant that you do seem to be a sailor so I figured you'd at least heard of em! After all theres plenty of stories of sailors and merphernals out there after all... You never know, some of them could be true!
... I mean. If they were real, would you even wanna catch one?
Well, ye never hear about Inphernals near water unless one of ‘em drowned again. Personally, I think more people’d have sharks as friends if they knew how to swim.
~ He scoffed, reaching to rub Invictus’s back and trace his fingers along the scars on its flank. ~
Yer right, I’ve heard plenty about merphernals.
~ He grinned, glancing back over at Shuriken. ~
Honestly, I think they’re plenty real! But I wouldn’t dare catch a merphernal, y’hear? It’d be disrespectful, sully Crossbow’s memory. ‘Sides, they’ll probably drag me into the water and drown me if I tried, ye hear?
I dunno... Merpherals seem pretty nice to me? I mean, why would they be hostile? They're just ocean inphernals after all right?
[ He was... Surprised. Shurifin never really knew what to say or how to approach people when talking about merphernals. There were... A lot of differing opinions, half good half bad. Some wanted to eat them and keep them in aquariums and some just thought that they were cool myths and fairytales.. He could never guess what would truly happen if someone were to meet one. ]
... You seem like a really nice guy, usually when other sailors try to talk to me they're rude and kinda gruff. I've sure been yelled at a few times to scram for being here too long!
Aye. Just ocean Inphernals. I don’t think they’re all that distant from us, really. Wouldn’t mind meetin’ one, either. I’d like to know what they think of us.
~ He crossed his arms, offering Shuriken a little smile. He wouldn’t say he’s the nicest person on earth, but he supposes age has surely mellowed him out. That, and his daughter. ~
I ain’t gonna yell atcha, mate. It’s nice to have someone other than me an’ me thoughts here fer once.
Pay no mind to whoever’s actin like their tailfin’s been trampled. They’re just too used to only the Inphernals of the faction being near the sea.
Heh, of course! I like being here. Talking to someone is.. Fun!
[ Shurifin slowly approached a little closer, taking a few steps forward now more comfortable and a lot less worried. He felt secure now.. At least if he did accidentally go into the water he wasn't going to get poached or screamed at. That was a big reassurance. ]
Oh, I just realized! My name is Shuriken by the way. Its nice to meet you!
[ He smiled, being a lot more happier now that he wasn't so afraid. This was.. Nice. He liked having someone to talk to. ]
~ The Inphernal shook the water off of his hand and reached out to shake his own, grinning cheerfully. His hand was calloused and warm. ~
I’m Anchor Cannon! But that’ll be Captain Anchor to ye.
~ Anchor was certainly surprised by this little Inphernal. He seemed jumpy, especially when they’d first met, but talking to him proved him to be quite good-natured. At least he seemed happier now, less fearful in his presence. That was good. ~
[ Shuriken stared at his hand for a moment. Oh this was a trap for an inphernal like him... He didn't want to be rude though.. ]
Heh, right! Its nice to meet you Captain!
[ He shook his hand but only for very lightly for a few moment, terrified that the leftover water would accidentally reveal his true form. Shurifin nervously looked at his hand as he let go. It was only his palm that got damp.. Good.. Thats good. Hopefully Anchor notice feel that. ]
[ He didn't want to wipe off his hand so awkwardly as if the captains hands were germs so he coped, holding the hand slightly tucked inwards as to not show the palm side. ]
Heh, ye got a weak handshake there, mate. Am I really that scary?
~ Anchor teased, walking back to deeper water. He was satisfied now, petting and quietly talking to Invictus for a little bit as he caught up with it. His fingers traced the scars along its side and looping around its tail, gotten from chains dragging roughly against flesh. He still felt bad about that. ~
Found yerself any new friends while I’ve been away, Invictus?
No, youre fine! I just have weak hands I suppose! Im more about agility...
[ Shuriken quickly tried to excuse himself, wiping his hand on the back of his pant leg as Anchor turned back around as to not be rude in front of him. He watched him pet the shark... Shurifin should go and say hello once he had the time... That being when he was alone. ]
Hmhm, they seem to quite like you!
[ He smiled gently watching the two talk. Shuriken chuckled to himself as he watched. ]
~ He sighed, smile fading a bit and becoming more rueful. ~
Got to this level of friendship after a long, long time. We, uh… didn’t meet on the best of terms. I’m doin’ me best to make sure they’re happy ‘round me.
~ Anchor huffed, straightening up and shoving his hands in his pockets. ~
[ Shuriken liked this guy... Out of all the sailors and fisherman and pirates he'd met so far, Anchor was the most receptive. He didn't mind spending time with him.. Even if the two of them were rather different! Shurifin wouldn't mind a sailor friend, especially one that didn't want to kill him. ]
~ Of course, why would he be a part of Drowned Atoll if he didn’t love the sea? He quite liked marine life, although he didn’t often get a good chance to appreciate it. ~
I reckon yer right. Lots of the sea creatures I’ve met have been real sweet, even if they’re pretty spooked by me. Like this one time, I met this iiiitty-bitty octopus, could hold it in the palm of my hand! It just sat there all confused, probably’d never been held by someone before.
~ Anchor was enjoying talking to Shuriken quite a lot! He got to ramble about the sea and his experiences without being treated like he was insane. He still thought he was a bit nervous for no reason, but he really didn’t mind it and shrugged it off. It was probably just one of those natural disposition things. ~
Aww... I once swam with a school of fish, it was really cool! I don't think they even noticed I was there!
[ He could say that right? Shuriken evidently knew how to swim else he wouldn't be here... Sharing some of his merphernal exploits wouldn't be too weird right? Its just water that was the issue! Water and how he spoke sometimes... Referring to inphernals like they were this foreign new concept could seem sort of odd, especially for a grown person like him. ]
The ocean is awesome... I wish I could go visit more often.
[ He laughed, suddenly getting nervous again... Shuriken didn't expect to be questioned about that! He stared out to sea avoiding eye contact. ]
Welll I... Guess I dont have much time anymore! I have a job that requires me around a lot, so.. Yknow! Besides Im not sure swimming is a good idea right now! I wouldn't want to seem rude or awkward...
~ Anchor chuckled along with Shuriken, although picked up on his nervousness. Frowning slightly, he tried to figure out why this was happening. Was he doing something wrong? ~
Mm, I hear ye. Yeah, bein’ busy takes a lot of time away from ye, no matter what it is.
~ He hesitated, taking a step forward and reaching out slightly. ~
But- I ain’t asking ye to swim, mate, ‘specially if ye don’t want to. What’s got ye so nervous? Yer like a worm on a hook.
[ Oh god hes backed himself into a corner... Shurifin had no valid reasons to be afraid, he was just scared.... Scared of the truth coming out. He knew that Anchor wasn't going to hurt him and wasn't going to get scared and freak out but still... If anyone else took a peek and saw his true self then Shuriken would be in a lot of danger. ]
Nothing! Its ... Um... Its nothing important, I guess im just a little nervous I suppose? Sorry- I know its.. Kinda weird?
[ Shurifin was completely fumbling this... He really needed a better way to talk to people, he cant keep crumbling like this!! He looks like a weirdo! ]
[ Shuriken shrugged, going back to staring out to sea before taking a seat next to him on the sand. He so desperately wanted to show him his reasons.. But he just couldn't do it. He was too hesitant, and he hated it. ]
I suppose Im just... Hesitant about my true self, hahah... Lots of people find me odd.
I understand. Doesn’t mean ye gotta be so nervous. If anything, that’s makin’ ye even more strange. Just relax a bit, it’ll all be okay.
~ Anchor leaned back a bit, staring out at the water too. Now that he thought about it, Shuriken reminded him a bit of Pencil when she was anxious. He was even saying the same things to him, trying to calm him down. ~
[ He fiddled with his fingers, staring at his now dried off hand. Shuriken paused... Before speaking again. He frowned. He tried to get more comfortable. ]
... Have you.. Have you ever had to hide who you truly are? Like.. Who you show yourself to be isnt what you actually are?
~ Anchor thought a bit, slowly tapping his fingers on the sand. ~
I s’pose maybe a little.
~ He couldn’t say for sure if he hid who he was. Most of the time, he had no reason to— he was either alone or with friends and his daughter. Although around strangers, he did have a habit of keeping from saying which faction or region he was from when asked. That probably counted for something. ~
[ Shurifin hugged his knees, looking at the waves listening to them. It was nice... He took a breath trying to think of what else to say or do. He felt... Cornered. Shuriken spaced out for a moment, closing his eyes. ]
[ He had to do something. ]
... Hey, uh. Do you wanna see something cool maybe?
[ Shuriken took of his sandals and took a step back, bracing for a moment before running into the ocean and diving into it. There was a faint light teal glow in the water before it fell silent and dark again... He then re-emerged sticking his head out from the shallow depths. ]
[ Did he look... Different? What happened to the inphernals clothes? And his... Fins... Shurifin stared, head half peeking out just halfway across his face. So this was what he was so nervous about.. ]
~ Anchor stared back at him in silence for a bit. He really didn’t know whether to be surprised, or upset, or what. Eventually, he got over it and grinned at him. ~
Aye, that is really cool! So yer a merphernal, eh?
~ He stood up and stretched before taking a few steps closer, the waves lapping at his feet. ~
Gotta admit, I’m still a bit confused. Why were ye so nervous earlier? I didn’t wanna hurt ye when I first met ye, nor do I now.
[ Shurifin blinked a few times, slowly raising out to show his full face swimming up to the shore to lay in the shallow ends. ]
Its not you! Its just.. Merphernals are a myth, we're supposed to be hidden and secretive. If we arent then people may steal us or worse! I dont really show people my true form, it's kinda.. Dangerous.
[ He stood up, a webbed hand coming up to rub the back of his neck. Shurifin knew he wouldnt be shocked but stil.. He felt scared. He looked around, double checking that nobody was watching him in the shadows or spying. ]
Well, you're a stranger. I know you're not gonna tell anyone because we just met and you respect me. Or at least understand me?
[ He smiled, shrugging as his long fat fishtail swished in the waves behind him. Shurifin felt a lot better now that he wasn't in hiding. Like he could truly be free. Shurifin blinked and blushed slightly at the compliment, softly laughing to himself. ]
Oh! Heh, thank you!! Lots of people find us beautiful, that's why were so sought after I guess!
[ Shurifin laughed, finding the stupid little impression he did quite funny. It was nice... He didn't have to be afraid. He was understood.. And not seen as weird. Comforting. ]
Hmhm, who knows. Maybe I'll try to sink your boat one day! Then you'll see who's really dangerous, heh!
Suure! I can breathe and see underwater, you watery attacks only power me MORE!!
[ He giggled, slipping and fallng backwards as he lost balance. Shurifin had actually never played around like this.. It was fun! The only person he did this with was his sister, but Vinesplash was always too nervous and busy to mess around like that. ]
Hit me with your best, Captain! Show me what got you that title in the first place!!
~ He waited until Shuriken got up again, then leapt forward to tackle him to the shallow seafloor. Thank goodness the water wasn’t freezing like it usually was, he thought, getting up and hefting Shurifin over his shoulder. ~
Wow, ye weigh nothing! Heh, that’ll just make this easier! Watch this!
~ He swung him over and threw him up and out a fathom or two into the air, stumbling backward so he could watch him fly out to deeper waters. He knew from Pencil’s firsthand information that doing that felt like meeting the sun, especially since Inphernals didn’t typically fly. ~
[ Shurifin playfully flailed as he was grabbed, not expecting to be flung like that. He shook his arms trying to fly himself before crashing and splashing into the depths... He could work with this! ]
[ It took a minute but... Shurifin was gone? Had he left or something? Where was he....? ]
[ The merphernal suddenly then appeared again from thin air, water droplets flinging off of him as he snuck up behind the captain and tackled him back down into the ocean with him. ]
SURPRISE ATTACK!! That was my super secret technique.... The invisible shark attack!
~ He was staring out in the distance waiting for Shurifin to resurface, then grunted as he was tackled face-down into the water. ~
Wha-
~ He rolled over, shoving him off and stumbling to his feet. He was completely soaked by now, but he didn’t mind it at all. Taking off his hat to wring a bit of water out of it, he put it on Shurifin’s head with a dramatic flourish. ~
That’s sneaky of ye, ye little bilge rat! Might have been outdone in the battle of dirty tricks… for now…
~ He still has a few ideas up his sleeve, but he didn’t want to use them all in one go. Best save them for another play fight. ~
[ Shurifin chuckled and stared at how soaked Anchor was now. Oopsie.. He got a little carried away, too distracted by the fact that he finally had someone to laugh with and enjoy time with. It was nice to make a new friend and not feel so awkward for once... It was freeing. ]
Heheh! My ninja skills are unmatched! You know what they say, always expect the unexpected!!
[ He took off the hat and handed it back to him, looking up at the sky with a hum. ]
Its getting pretty late.. Sorry about your clothes by the way! I got a little carried away.. Its been so long since I've been able to splash around like this!
~ He took his hat back and put it back on, shaking himself off like a dog to purposely flick water at Shuriken. ~
Oh, next time I come by I’ll definitely heed yer words.
~ Anchor started walking back to shore, the water a bit deeper than his stomach and slowing him down. ~
It ain’t a problem, I’ll just get home and wash ‘em off, no doubt about it! I had a good time with ye, mate. It’s also been a while since I’ve had a good fight ‘round the water, playful or not.
Yeah! We'll see if we meet again, I'd like to come by and play again.
[ Shurifin swam back up to shore, standing and walking up back onto the sand. He wasn't entirely sure how to dry off... He usually bought towels but didn't this time since he wasn't expecting company. He hummed and shook off the water, shaking his hands dry before holding his breath and transforming back into his inphernal disguise. The sea water sliding off of him and evaporating as he did so. ]
What time do you usually come by the bay? I wouldn't mind organizing something if... You want to? I think we're friends enough for that. Aren't we?
I promise not to drag you into the ocean next time, if its any reassurance!
~ Anchor watched with interest as Shurifin changed back into his Inphernal form, shrugging off his coat to shake that out some. ~
Well, I usually come by and stay by Crossroads on Wednesdays. Get some food an’ supplies, ya know. Simple stuff like that.
~ He scratched his neck as he thought it over. Wringing water out of his coat as he talked and walked, he shook it out once more before putting it back on. ~
It’s just that we’ve been on land for a while so we can patch up our ship. Some creature took a huge bite out of her hull, so we’re workin’ on that. Should be finished in about a day.
Howsabout dawn tomorrow? Ain’t got much goin’ on fer me, since it’s the weekend and all… what about ye?
[ Shuriken happily agreed, stretching as he wrung some water out of his hair and pulled his hood up. He'll put his clothes in the washer once he got home... He just hopes that Vinesplash wont rip his horns out for doing this. ]
If you ever need a snack my day job is at Thieves Rest. I can bring you some pastries if you'd want any? Im sure Sling wont mind!
[ Shurifin- I mean- Shuriken was out by the sea, idly staring off out at the ocean... He seemed deep in thought. The totally not suspicious inphernal looked left and right making sure that he was alone before approaching closer to the shoreline.... Before hesitating and turning back around. ]
