A couple of years ago I used to see this guy jogging in the Rosebery Avenue, Exmouth Market area of London in the early evenings and in all weathers. From the way he ran I was pretty certain he was, like me, a former squaddie. Most former soldiers can recognise the signs in other solders that they’ve served. It’s like a stamp on us, and visible only to us. Women would gaze at him with desire as he went by while many men, strangers to the rigours of a real man’s life, and confronted by their inadequacies, would look at him in confusion, envy and even hatred.
