Oh hai y'all
I refuse to pull my punches and be nice about minority representation because I've seen people be downright insulting about it and enough is enough.
Representation matters. I don’t give a fuck what you think.
So all you people saying “Do you REALLY have to have a Disney Princess to identify with?” or some other fucking bullshit.
Yes.
Yes I do.
I WANT her.
And so do a FUCK ton of other little girls.
And before you start with “Well then I want a Scottish/Norwegian princess” with your passive-agressive sarcastic ass, it’s not about the nationality, it’s about the ethnicity. She could’ve been from Trinidad or Ghana or fucking Detroit and I wouldn’t have cared because she was of the African Diaspora and it didn’t matter which country she was from, because there was finally someone I could connect to on that one level that was always denied me with Belle, Aurora, Ariel (who is tied WITH Tiana for my favorite because I fucking loves me some mermaids) and princesses of that ilk.
When you’re constantly TOLD one thing but SHOWN another, shit gets twisted and sometimes you don’t know WHO to believe.
Mommy tells you that you’re a princess but Mommy doesn’t own a multi-billion dollar franchise that puts out European Princess after European Princess (several of which share countries of origin), but you’re left begging for Pretty Princess scraps.
When you’re told as a child by another child that you shouldn’t dress up as MAID MARIAN- A FUCKING FOX- because she isn’t black, there’s some shit going down.
That I could been Jasmine or Pocahontas as I got older… like really?
When the magazines already don’t think you’re race is pretty unless you can be fetishized, then you become a token.
When they don’t even tokenize you, they just claim that you’re not the “aesthetic” they’re looking for as runway after runway has carbon copy catwalk models stomp down a path.
When the media won’t even look at you unless you can be fetishized or demonized and mass distributed as “spicy”, “demure”, and “sassy” or “crazy”,”doormat”, and “outspoken” or some blend of these things and other shit which often contributes to hyper-sexualization of children’s bodies at younger and younger ages who are being held as willing participants in their own sexual assaults.
So yea, when EVERYONE else isn’t liking you, is it REALLY too much to ask for to get a goddamn Disney Princess- Disney; which is pretty much a childhood staple for many to cut their teeth on, even unconsciously so- who looks a SLIGHT bit like you?
I don’t think so.
Tiana don’t look a goddamn thing like me but damnit if she ain’t a sista (which I am) from New Orleans (which I fucking am too and THAT was a bonus I damn sure wasn’t expecting).
And I KNOW Disney is a business and White/Eurocentric heroes/heroines sell but damn if you won’t even TRY and give something more than just “There’s one princess for everyone else (except for Latinos), are you satisfied now, you whiny babies?” because that’s really not on.
If anyone sure won’t go bankrupt, it’s fucking Disney.
So don’t fucking come and talk to me about how representation shouldn’t matter if you are represented to the point of overrepresentation.
How I walk past my ex
This is me everyday.
If you’re a boy writer, it’s a simple rule: you’ve gotta get used to the fact that you suck at writing women and that the worst women writer can write a better man than the best male writer can write a good woman. And it’s just the minimum. Because the thing about the sort of heteronormative masculine privilege, whether it’s in Santo Domingo, or the United States, is you grow up your entire life being told that women aren’t human beings, and that women have no independent subjectivity. And because you grow up with this, it’s this huge surprise when you go to college and realize that, “Oh, women aren’t people who does my shit and fucks me.” And I think that this a huge challenge for boys, because they want to pretend they can write girls. Every time I’m teaching boys to write, I read their women to them, and I’m like, “Yo, you think this is good writing?” These motherfuckers attack each other over cliche lines but they won’t attack each other over these toxic representations of women that they have inherited… their sexist shorthand, they think that is observation. They think that their sexist distortions are insight. And if you’re in a writing program and you say to a guy that their characters are sexist, this guy, it’s like you said they fucking love Hitler. They will fight tooth and nail because they want to preserve this really vicious sexism in the art because that is what they have been taught. And I think the first step is to admit that you, because of your privilege, have a very distorted sense of women’s subjectivity. And without an enormous amount of assistance, you’re not even going to get a D. I think with male writers the most that you can hope for is a D with an occasional C thrown in. Where the average women writer, when she writes men, she gets a B right off the bat, because they spent their whole life being taught that men have a subjectivity. In fact, part of the whole feminism revolution was saying, “Me too, motherfuckers.” So women come with it built in because of the society. It’s the same way when people write about race. If you didn’t grow up being a subaltern person in the United States, you might need help writing about race. Motherfuckers are like ‘I got a black boy friend,’ and their shit sounds like Klan Fiction 101. The most toxic formulas in our cultures are not pass down in political practice, they’re pass down in mundane narratives. It’s our fiction where the toxic virus of sexism, racism, homophobia, where it passes from one generation to the next, and the average artist will kill you before they remove those poisons. And if you want to be a good artist, it means writing, really, about the world. And when you write cliches, whether they are sexist, racist, homophobic, classist, that is a fucking cliche. And motherfuckers will kill you for their cliches about x, but they want their cliches about their race, class, queerness. They want it in there because they feel lost without it. So for me, this has always been the great challenge. As a writer, if you’re really trying to write something new, you must figure out, with the help of a community, how can you shed these fucking received formulas. They are received. You didn’t come up with them. And why we need fellow artists is because they help us stay on track. They tell you, “You know what? You’re a bit of a fucking homophobe.” You can’t write about the world with these simplistic distortions. They are cliches. People know art, always, because they are uncomfortable. Art discomforts. The trangressiveness of art has to deal with confronting people with the real. And sexism is a way to avoid the real, avoiding the reality of women. Homophobia is to avoid the real, the reality of queerness. All these things are the way we hide from encountering the real. But art, art is just about that.

My mother always says in order to get tolerance, you must be tolerant, even of intolerance.
I personally think that's some really whacked out thinking.

I am hopelessly indecisive, especially if I like both things. So I've got two sketchy ideas, both of which are braincrack for me, and I'd really appreciate some help. c: I always have to write a thing before I decide to think more about it because of reasons, so included with each idea is a wee bit of what I've written about it. It may not prove helpful to you, but....yeah....
1. "Every time she read a book, she got this way. Walking down the busy sidewalk, brushing passed people with hardly any notice, she was getting lost in the world printed on the page, feeling as if she were there and could influence the characters to choose the obviously correct option rather than the wrong one they’d inevitably pick. Today’s world belonged to that of Alice in Wonderland and she was just getting to the poem about the Jabberwocky when she realized everything had fallen silent. Usually she wouldn’t bother looking up, but it felt…odd. And once she raised her eyes off of her book, she realized just how lost she was - nothing looked at all familiar. In fact, there weren’t any buildings at all.
Panic set in and she turned quickly to look over her shoulder, hoping to find the buildings she passed every day standing as a reminder that she hadn’t lost her mind.
What she found was hardly as kind.
Greenery, every which way she turned. It was like she walked into the front of a National Geographic and she grasped her book tighter, hoping to find some comfort in it.
"What rabbit hole have I fallen into?""
Okay. So. Basically, people are going about their lives, doing whatever it is they do, and, without warning, they find themselves in this unfamiliar place. It's a completely different world, ruled by this extremely powerful being who selects people seemingly at random to come and entertain him. Like some sort of alien reality show. Sort of. I guess. But fighting for survival and death will happen and maybe romance but probably not because that's hardly any fun in this kinda situation, I'd think. I'm not certain of any characters yet, nor do I know much about the world or the ~being. Therein lies the fun.
2. "He had shaken her awake and there was no returning to anything she knew previously. All of her essential belongings had been gathered and placed in one bag three nights ago after they had met in Shane’s barn, but she had never been told the full plan. Such was her lot in life, never being in on the full scope of things. It was something that she had learned to accept from these people, but never from Jett. He always let her know what was going on even when the others shunned her, but this time was different. She only knew half of the plan and she was completely prepared for that, but what lay beyond what had been set thus far she wasn’t certain of.
Still in her pajamas, she put on her colorful socks and hiking boots before following closely behind her friend, making certain not to get caught in the darkness alone. The summer air was cool against her skin, refreshing almost, as she threw her bag into the bed of Jett’s truck. Genevieve hopped up into the cab on the passenger side with a huff as she shut the door. Once he started the truck and the lights came on, she tried to memorize the pale yellow of the house she’d likely never see again. But did she really care much about that miserable place? Before she had the chance to trace the intricate design on the doorframe, Jett had pulled the truck into reverse and they began to speed toward the McNeil farm. They still had copious amounts of work to do before they were ready to begin this stupid idea of theirs."
So this one I've thought about for actual eons. A catastrophic thing has happened, but no one knows what. They just know no communication is coming in or out of their town, people are panicking, and they need to clear out or build up walls or something before someone with nothing to lose / no morals comes through. Genevieve is the main character here, and she's just, I love her a lot. Anyway, they've gathered a group of people of all ages and backgrounds to discuss what they must do next and they can all agree survival is the ultimate goal. As for the characters, I've already created a few and written little things from their point-of-view (because then I can write what they'd do more realistically, I guess) and the major question here for me to figure out is where they'll go from here and what will happen, aside from, again, survival, death. The potential for romance is greater, though still kinda doubtful, but FRIENDSHIPS. /throws glitter and confetti GLORIOUS FRIENDSHIPS EVERYWHERE
