This week @a-noble-dragon sets us a gen and rare pair challenge:

There are many relationships depicted in Schitt’s Creek, both romantic and platonic, good and bad, and each one of them is absorbing - and in some cases enthralling. We’re lucky then that our fandom creators have gone away and expanded on each of those canon relationships, as well as had the skill to create new and exciting pairings. So for this weeks Fic Rec Friday, let’s delve into both categories by including some of our favourite Rare Pair fanworks, gen or otherwise.

Do you enjoy friendship fics? Sibling banter? Best friends who troll each other? Parents getting to know their children? Platonic soulmates? Or femslash? Well, whichever you prefer, we would love to hear all about it.

The one that sprang straight to mind for me was this brilliant little Ray & Patrick fic:

In which Patrick has just moved in with Ray and hopes to bond with him over a shared love of sportsball. The plays on canon dialogue are so clever and funny; it makes my cricket-loving heart sing. But don't worry if, like David, you know nothing about cricket: you'll still enjoy this fun ficlet!

How Do We Get Back (@unfolded73) “An AU testing the "in-every-universe" principle: will David and Patrick find each other, even when stuck in a particularly angst-ridden timeline? (Spoiler: they *will*!) Funny and fast-moving, with excellent cameos by Twyla and Gwen and some shocking (but temporary) bad news, this story is a great way to spend a cozy afternoon.”

How the reindeer loved him (yourbuttervoicedbeau/@kiwiana-writes) “A masterclass in 'this concept shouldn't work as well as it does' tbh - the entire premise is RIDICULOUS but it’s stuffed full of feelings and knocks it out of the park.”

Making Spirits Bright (roseapothecary/@indestructibleheart)  “It’s “A Christmas Carol” for Patrick! You know Patrick’s story, and you can guess what the ghosts might show him. But I promise this fic gives us scenes that are fresh and new. There’s a lot of humor mixed in with the painful realizations, and, overall, it’s a strong, well-written, and satisfying fic.”

Now you see me (@grapehyasynth) “Stevie sets David and Patrick up on a blind date and though there isn't a lot of plot, the banter is SO sharp and the characterization is SO perfect that the piece just shimmers. This is a deep-cut one-shot first-meeting/first-date AU from 2019.”

1. Pretty Paper Fic & Art by @five678patty Patrick’s first wedding anniversary gift for David doesn’t go as planned. The fic is lovely and it features origami of their more notable outfits. Really cool idea.

Fic Rec Friday

Ok, I'm gonna rec 3 fics because I'm greedy, ha!

First I want to rec 2 Schitt's Creek Rare pair fics that surprised me because I never expected to enjoy these pairings as much as I did. Both are really great fics by really great authors.

The Fundamental Things by @goodiecornbread follows Mutt and Jake as their relationship slowly changes from friends to lovers. It's a slow burn. From the prompt - Mutt comes back to town for the winter and finds the barn uninhabitable. Faced with sleeping on his parents' couch for the next few months, he jumps on Jake's offer of his spare room in exchange for some help around the woodshop. Between holidays and through storms, they discover that they have a lot more in common than they ever thought.

I have subsequently read a few more Jake/Mutt fics since and enjoyed them all and it's thanks to this author.

Next we have Three's Company by treepyful (treeperson) which features Alexis/Twyla and Miguel/Shannon/Ted in which the three in question are all freaking out about their surprise threesome, then in steps Alexis Rose to save the day. Naturally!

This is such a funny and fun fic, and the author has worked really hard to hold the controlled chaos all together in a very clever and spectacular way.

Then lastly I want to rec Pretty Paper by @five678patty - Patrick’s first wedding anniversary gift to David didn’t land quite the way he had expected.

This author and artist created something so different and so very lovely with their origami inspired fic. Every chapter contains a gorgeous little surprise that you can't help falling in love with. It's unique and I think it's very special.

David plucks the petals from the dozen long-stemmed roses Sebastien had delivered.

He loves me. He loves me not.                                    

Petals litter the floor, and tears streak David’s cheeks. Not even halfway through dismembering the beautifully boxed apology flowers, he knows the truth.

Still, he plucks. He wants to be wrong.

David picks each petal from the floor then moves to the bed. He examines the delicate flowerheads there. Bruised and torn. Ground into Egyptian cotton. He plucks the survivors from the sheets to turn into potpourri.

Their bedroom overlooks Patrick’s well-tended garden. Roses in full bloom.

He loves me.

“Patrick?”

“David! I’m drunk!”

“Okay?”

“Don’ worry. Ted’s drivin’.”

“W-why are you drunk with Ted?”

“We won baseball. So. Drinks!”

David grins. “I see. Why are you calling me, though?”

Patrick’s voice goes soft. “I’m glad I got the money.”

“Me too, Patrick.”

“I …”

“Yeah?”

“I was thinkin’ ‘bout how you’re like a crazy jungle flower?

David breathes, “Why?”

“Beautiful. Rare. Amazing.”

David whispers, “Thank you.”

Patrick sighs. “We won baseball an’ my business person is beautiful. I feel sooo lucky.”

David closes his eyes as hope blooms. “Me too, Patrick.”

“Scuffed the paint?”

“Are you a car? What—”

“Scraped some meat off—”

“Patrick!”

“Okay! I wiped out coming up the driveway.”

“You were ogling farmer Franklin across the street, weren’t you?”

“David. He’s on his tractor. Shirtless.”

David’s jaw drops.

“I’m fine. Go look!”

He does anyway.

Sebastien is handsome, but he’s proof that all that glitters isn’t gold. 

David guesses that Patrick’s kind of cute. 

Maybe even beautiful, with his fair skin and big brown eyes. Those forearms.

Sebastien teases with sharp teeth.

Patrick teases with warmth. Fondness threading through every word.

Seb is pretentious and callous.

Patrick is kind, funny and smart. 

And incredibly, incandescently hot.

David has noticed Patrick a little bit.

Okay, a-fucking-lot. 

David’s in so much trouble.

Patrick is swinging a baseball bat above his head and moving his hips like he’s hula’ing an invisible hoop. It’s ridiculous, yet David can’t tear his eyes away.

“What do you think?” Patricks asks when he’s done. “I really wanna rub my next homer in Ronnie’s face.”

“I think your slam dunk—”

“Home run.”

“—dance is very cute.”

“Your face says otherwise.”

“Okay, fine! Maybe we can workshop a few ideas. Tighten up the choreo. Add some polish.” David’s hands gesture excitedly. “Start from the top and I’ll take some notes.”

Patrick grins. “Thank you, David.”
