It's a lot healthier to go for a daily walk than to sign up for a gym membership you won't be using because you hate that kind of exercise. It's a lot healthier to eat a frozen meal than to skip a meal because you were too tired to cook something healthy. It's a lot healthier to take a quick shower than to procrastinate an elaborate routine for days. Don't aim so high that you won't be hitting anything!

You know what I miss the most about pre-1990s fantasy? Novels with titled chapters and tables of contents. I know you still get them now and again, but before the 90s it was common practice, and you wouldn't believe how much easier it is to discuss shit when you've got named episodes to go on.

I’m not gonna judge Nolan’s Odyssey movie until I see it but I sort of don’t understand why pretty much the entire cast is just celebrities. There don’t seem to be any debut actors in the entire main cast. Even I’ve heard of most of these people and even the ones I haven’t heard of have already been in multiple popular projects.

The "Honourable Mention" that wasn't

I have a number of completely petty, and not at all important, pet peeves. And of them all....... ok the misuse of the term "honourable mention" is perhaps not my biggests but it is on my mind today.

So how is the term used currently? In general when people make their "top X list" they will then throw in a few of what they call honourable mentions. That is items that did not make the list but they felt worth noting. In practice though this tends to be just a few quickfire additions to the list.

Like on an instagram reel I saw where these guys put their top 3 forward for some topic, but begin with an "honourable mention" which makes it effectively a top 4.

A lot of the time the "honourable mentions" are just that. A few quick mentions of items that would have been detailed more if it were, say, a top 15 list and not a top 10. Or a way to mention the things a fandom would want you to which you do not agree with.

And it is not quite "wrong" to do that. I guess. I just find it incredibly boring.

I'll give an example of how I would prefer to use the term. There was a top 25 list of magc users in Game of Thrones (Fandome on Youtube, a great channel all told). It was a good list. And near the end they had an honourable mention - dragons.

The reasoning was great. Dragons are very clearly magic, but they are not magic users like Melissandre or the Night King. They should be mentioned, but cannot be on the actual list.

That is a GREAT use of the term honourable mention. They do not quite fit on the list, but definitely need to be mentioned. I prefer it a lot more than the common use of "not in the top 10, but would have been in the top 15" that the term seems to be used for.

So as an example, lets say I was listing my Top 5 Romance films. I would pick any number of them but I think I would probably put a movie like Rocky. It is not a Romance film, not really. But Rocky's romance with Adrian is perhaps even more important to the film than the fight. There is a reason he is calling for HER at the end and not listening to the result. The Romance is key to the film, but it is not a romance film in the way a movie like "The Holiday" is.

In a similar way I wouldn't call Die Hard a Christmas film (it being Christmas is honestly kind of incidental to the plot). But it would certainly be a honourable mention in the list.

So yeah. I think Honourable Mentions make much more sense to discuss things which we like, and are related to the topic of our "top x" list but don't really fit on it.

Wasn’t there a whole thing in the comics about aang getting offended over some air nomad super fans using the arrow since you have to be a master to get your arrow tattoos? And basically the super fan group was doing a cultural appropriation by having arrow tats? I feel like that was a whole ass thing in the comics.

Good thing those people are all fictional and cosplaying as a fictional character isn't going to offend all those other fictional characters.

And Aang in the end realised that HE was also being something of an asshole, that they were sincere in their love of Air Nomad culture, and he ends by educating them on Air Nomad Culture personally and they became the Air Acolytes that would work with Tenzin in the Korra series - including one of them being Tenzin's wife and so Aang''s daughter in law and mother of his grandchildren (though Aang had admittedly dies before they were born).

So the comics moral seemed to be "culture is meant to be shared, and people who genuinely love it should be welcomed in and taught properly not simply hated for showing their appreciation"
