a lot of the time i get hit with a lot of loneliness and despair because ive been out of relationships for a while. i feel undesirable and alone and i really panic at the idea that it might be like this forever. aside from calming down and realizing that’s not true + also the mental illness talking, i genuinely think its been harder for those episodes to last as long as they used to because im surrounded by people who are constantly rejecting and reinventing what love and intimacy means. im completely alloromantic and allosexual but i mean it so genuinely when i say considering things from an aromantic perspective makes my life so much freer

the irony of the betrayal scene is that grace has actually managed to have about half of his character arc by that point and the very fact that he's saying "no" demonstrates that he's getting closer to being the brave person stratt needs on her side, just not quite close enough. he's being firm to say he's not just gonna do whatever people ask of him and he's exhibiting vulnerability and trust in a personal relationship by believing that stratt will hear and respect his answer. let us not forget that this is the man who did Try to resist getting put in the argon death cube but ultimately rolled his eyes and went "ugh kinda bossy but whatever this is okay I guess" about it. his experiences on the petrova taskforce have made him an iota stronger, and I think that's part of what makes stratt so frustrated in that scene. the book "I don't want to die" and movie "you just can’t talk me into it" lines, representing taking ownership of his desires and an unwillingness to be passive to others' wants, are both breakthroughs for him and things he would have been too cowardly to say earlier in the timeline, and she definitely knows him well enough to be able to see that. I think there's a part of her that's thinking "if you'd only done this faster and been the person who learned how to say no two years ago then maybe by now you'd be the person who's learned how to say yes."

fave dynamic is platonic but somethings weird with it (the weird part is an insanely deep level of devotion, trust and understanding, as well as narrative importance that is not typically allowed for platonic relationships in media, making the portrayal feel unique and queer in nature. typically best served as m+f)

On a rewatch, Grace’s anger issues are so fascinating. Besides the hints we get of his past, his frustration and almost arrogance that leads to him lashing out and facing what may be a huge line of consequences that had been building up over time. Losing job, perhaps his relationship around the same time, losing respect in his community.

It’s interesting to see since in the flashbacks Grace is a mix of mellowed out but still has that lingering frustration. He raises his voice the moment he gets back into discussing the details of his paper, he starts throwing things in the lab and storms out when he’s proven wrong again, but he instantly shrinks back in on himself once it’s over.

There’s like this desperation for validation and respect with this frustration. And he’s much calmer and trying to humble himself but it seems almost like he’s gone too far in the other direction? He almost punishes himself, he talks down on himself so much for being a coward in the book. It reminds me of when people are so hurt they insist they didn’t care to begin with and it would’ve never worked, but they care so much. He barely even recognizes he’s the second in command at that point. He’s so used to ignoring his own worth he doesn’t understand when people actually properly respect him and his work.

I think just having a friend like Rocky helps so much for his growth. Someone who lets him work and prosper in what he’s good at while not putting him on a pedestal or with these grand expectations that would make him turn around and insist he’s not worth it. They just connect and their differences work together so well. Rocky will call him a mess and an idiot but take care of him and acknowledge when he’s doing great, when he IS brave.

He’s so fascinating. It’s so interesting seeing wet cat of a man with all these issues that hold him back. He had to literally forget himself to do what he was always capable of without his fears and self doubt. Idk I’m rambling

at the beginning of battles they would ride in on horseback, juggling swords or lances, and taunt & bait  the opposition. soldiers would get so angry they would break rank & weaken formations just to try to kill the fool

I think there's a great chance the existence of mirrors/reflective surfaces silently fucks Rocky up.

Like, Grace is in the bathroom, shaving, the curtain pulled to the side and suddenly he stops and says "stop touching my stuff". Rocky, frozen, somewhere behind him, can't fathom how Grace sensed that. He was so quiet. The razor is so loud. Grace's still facing away from him. What the fuck.

Grace repairing some panel or other and asks for a tool. Without even turning around, he says "no, not that one, the one to its left". Rocky's like are you shitting me. I know for a fact your hearing is ass. You can only see in one direction and I'm not in it!! What?!
