white privelage and feminism: taylor swift
since taylor's new music video came out i've been thinking about her song, and her in general a lot. i immediately hated the song and music video. great, more bitterness and crying out for attention was my first reaction. i already dislike taylor swift for many reasons, she's mediocre and overhyped, and i just don't relate to her, and her petty problems...at all. and then i read this post about how if you hate her video it's because you have some internalized misogyny. then i thought, damn maybe they're right. am i doing what everyone else does by bashing a woman artist for doing exactly what male artists do all the time.
but no, that's not it. it's her constant, constant bitterness and need to diss people who've hurt her or disrespected her that seems to be the only base for her music. and i don't like that. because to me, it's the base of white privelage. the privelage to continue on how the world has mistreated you, how the world has been unfair to you, and now you must seek some type of woman power against the world. white privelage is having the power to constantly bring up how the world or people are so unfair, and continuously justify their actions( like taylor swifts video dissing many other artists) with the basic "well they disrespected me, and i'm right they're wrong" white privelage is always being right, and taylor swift exceeds these expectations by a long shot.
for one, her lawsuit against the dj who groped her was absolutely ridiculous to me. i mean what the fuck. no i don't support her at all. and i don't condone any type of sexual assault as well. but in her case.....
she really sued this man for $1 to make a statement. but what statement is that? that it's not about the money, but that he should be held liable for what' he did? but, that didn't happen. what taylor swift got was a bunch of media attention claiming her as the victim ( if this was not a white woman like taylor swift i can guarantee the media would have portrayed this situation a lot differently) and 1$ with a crappy new single. so how is this holding this man accountable? by putting his name in the spotlight for what he did? petty as fuck. how is this teaching woman that what he did is not okay? and on top of that, most woman chose not to come forward because of media backlash, or they want to keep their assault private. understandable. taylor swift needs people to know what he did (rolls eyes). I cannot relate with taylor swift because she has been sexually assaulted, even though i've experienced sexual assault. and it's not because i have some internalized mysongy. it's because i've internalized my hatred for white privilege, and taylor swift is the epitome of white privilege to me.
in my opinion, she is not a strong powerful woman who supports other woman and is someone i can relate to. she's fake. her feminism or girl power stance, or whatever the fuck she calls it, is fake to me. what real issues does she talk about in her music that woman go through? the kanye west song? how he embarrassed her at the vmas? her reason for even brining that up in her new song, just makes me laugh. another bitter rivalry she can't let go of. she, taylor swift, cannot be disrespected by no one. she's just....ugh i can't stand her.
does she really support woman? like, really? because her problems, her issues with misogyny need for feminism are a crutch, a reason to have a problem, a reason to be in the spotlight. how is it that her story of winning $1 over a sexual assault case exceed the issues of women getting raped and never getting justice. it's almost like a slap in the face. because in reality, most underpivlaged, woman of color, or woman who do not have the status of taylor swift do not have the resources to bring a man to court and win $1.
what my problem with it is that she doesn't focus on the emotional abuse, the trauma, the ptsd of sexual assault. instead she puts a dollar bill in her music video as some kind of symbol of victory.
i just....i can't support taylor swift.
open to any opinion that can help me understand how taylor swift is a role model to women and how her music video sends a powerful message.
because i just can't see it right now.
