“Nothing to worry about,” he said brusquely as he passed the short, slight man through the arch. They continued to cross paths again and again throughout the day to the point that he started acknowledging the other, whether by a slight look of chagrin, a polite smile- and eventually, joking, almost familiar waves that made light of their near constant run ins. “Long time no see,” he said, as the two wound up on the same refreshments line.

He tried his best to not let the response bother him, but the truth was when he felt like someone was upset he always felt an overwhelming need to try and make them happy again. Even if he didn't really know them, and this moment was no different. For the most part he felt like he'd successfully brushed it off-- except that they just kept running into each other.

Anthony was halted in his tracks by the shorter, dark haired male standing in the narrow archway. They hadn’t collided face to face, thank God. That would have been awkward. The great thing about Washington state, was that there was free coffee everywhere. Everywhere. Gas stations, offices, truck stops, and coffee stands at the side of the road. Some even were staffed by volunteers- many of them elderly ladies serving home made cookies. People always thought Billy was exaggerating when he would tell of this to old college friends and travel buddies. They even joked that that was part of the reason Billy settled in the area. They were at least partly right. So, if his hitch-hiker wanted coffee, he’d have it. But Billy was in the mood for something more substantial than biscotti. “How about a diner instead. They’ll let your dog in if you’re with me,” he said, unconcerned whatsoever about the reception. There was no need. The dog might even get an embarrassingly sappy reception. “You know.. its not really a good idea to accept rides from strangers, right? What’s your name by the way?” A part of him suspected the kid and dog might actually be homeless. He could buy them both some pancakes or steak or something.

“As long as it’s warm and dry we’ll be happy.” Rory  announced, smiling and laughing softly as Bruce’s rain-drenched tail wagged in approval. Though he hadn’t been walking for that long compared to other nights, or days in his past, it still wore on him. Rory felt sore and tired. He knew that when he got a cup of coffee, or anything hot, he’d feel better. “And as long as you’re sure. Bruce and I go everywhere together, but I don’t wanna cause any trouble for you.” That was true. Rory had no reason to pester this man; he’d been nothing but helpful to him. His savior from the rain, but Rory had to laugh loudly at the piece of advice. “Yeah. I’ve heard that somewhere. Should I be worried ‘bout you? Am I gonna wake up in a tub with organs missing?” He teased, red-brown eyes rolling playfully.  “Oh! I’m Rory-- and this is Bruce.”

The hesitation was understandable. The wet, bedraggled slip of a figure didn’t want to track water and mud into the truck and add wet dog hair on top of it. The truck was already quite a muddy mess. And it was wet and cold out. If his truck was going to be a mud-soaked, he could rest easier knowing he’d spared someone from pneumonia. Besides, he didn’t have a dog harness for the truck bed and he didn’t want a swerve or ill-timed break hurling the dog into oncoming traffic. He hated when people just stuck a dog in the bed, out in the open with no protection whatsoever. “The towel will do,” he said, a bit more curtly than intended. He cleared his throat and softened his tone slightly. “And sorry for the language. I don’t normally curse.” It had been…. a long day. And night. But the worst was over so he had nothing to be sour about. “Where are you two headed?”

Rory didn’t argue, he hopped up onto the passenger’s seat and pulled the towel onto him, patting his lap to call Bruce up. The mutt hopped up like he’d done it a hundred times before-- and they had; maybe even more than that in hindsight.  He was happy to be sitting again. Even if he was soaking wet, this meant he was on his way home, and headed towards a nice, long bath-- the hottest he could run to wash all the mud and cold off of him. Then, maybe, he’d bathe Bruce too. “Thanks so much-- and really, I don’t mind the language. You might not have gotten my attention otherwise. I was on a mission.” Rory laughed, grinning a crooked grin. Bruce leaned against Rory, clearly trying to stay on the towel and his master’s lap. Rory laughed and laid his head atop the once-beige canine. “Home. Hopefully. We live just a few streets from downtown so whatever coffee shop you want is fine.”
