"I would like to become Christian!" Floki giggled.
If his laugh had not been a sign of his obvious jest, his smirk would have. Unsure of if she should give a sharp reply or ignore him - the second seeming the more safe response, Gisla fought the urge to roll her eyes and curled her knees up to her chest to shift further away from the pagan. It infuriated her beyond words could describe that anyone would treat the Lord’s Word and way as a joke, but she reminded herself that they simply did not know any better. — “You seem more amused by the thought than truly serious.”
She is tired. Gisla could not recall how long they had been walking for, the princess forced to march alongside the pagans (who reeked of salt and blood and Lord only knew what else). Never before had she ever walked so much, and her fine legs - while shapely - were not accustomed to the exertion. Her only warning was her own breath leaving her in a gasp, and with great frustration and no little amount of embarrassment, Gisla found her legs to have given out —-

Don’t consider Athelstan a Northman? Bring it up with Ragnar.

Captive
“Ambition will be your downfall.” At the time, Gisla had rolled her big brown eyes at the father for his scolding, for she knew men were told no such thing. Not her father, not her grandfather, not her great grandfather who had founded Francia - and when the time came, she had planned on being just as great as Charlemagne, no matter what sex God had created her to be. When the pagans arrived outside the walls of Paris and a battle unlike anything since the time of her famed relative was planned, she prepared herself. All the years of bending her father’s ear and twisting his thoughts to her will, all the time she had spent stringing Count Odo along with the tantalizing temptation of marriage to the clever daughter of the emperor. It all fell into place so perfectly - and then, in the moment when she had though that it had all been sure, when she had been declaring the sovereignty of their God and His faith in His beloved, chosen soldiers - She f e l l . A soldier who had been tangling with one of the pagans (’vikings’ she had heard someone refer to them as) reached for a hold when an arrow pierced his heart only for his hand to find the thick silks and rich wool of her gown, pulling Gisla over the ramparts with him. Her fall, praise be to God, was broken by the water, and she only just managed to extract herself from the cold, murky brown tainted with red when she had been grabbed and hauled away. No longer was she princess Gisla of Francia and Normandy, no longer was she to be known as the stone maiden who had inspired their soldiers with her faith, reminiscient of the holy Virgin herself with her piety and bearing the passion of St. Peter - She was a prisoner. Her eyes were cold and angry, like that of a small animal caught in a trap as she regarded her captors. It was clear that the battle had not gone in their favour - something that still brought Gisla a small amount of pleasure and pride - and so far they had seemed far too concerned with licking their wounds to consider raping or harming her. However, it seemed none of them were able to speak her own language and she did not speak theirs, and so the furious woman sat in silence, watching and waiting and praying for the courage to handle whatever was to happen next.
...
“Oh no! You are not rude, I assure you!” She accepted the goblet of wine with a small nod of her head. At the mention of the northmen and Ecbert a little shiver ran through her and she took a deep breath and let it out. “You have…you have seen them?” She tried to look neither too interested or too hopeful.
“A few,” replied Gisla with a sip of her wine - Judith was as sweet and as naive as she had heard. And hoped. “More and more seem to flock to Paris these days. Count Odo seems to believe they will attempt to raid the city, but I think it is simply because there is nothing like Paris in their home land. I hear they are fearsome warriors, but their home is quite… rugged.”
At the mention of a raid, Judith’s large eyes only looked sad. It was as if inside of her there was a divide. She didn’t want to believe that these people would attack them, could hurt her, and yet… Athelstan himself was proof. If they could attack unarmed monks, what would stop them from attacking Paris? Attacking her? She swallowed, wondering if Athelstan would come with them. Would he protect her? “They are fearsome, yes. They are…great warriors and proud men, but they are not demons. They have joy and sorrow and families as we do, and they love just as much….more, I think. They seem to have more…freedom in that.”
Gisla, she liked to think, had always been a godly woman. Raised by priests and devour noblewomen as her father bumbled his way through Francia's politics had allowed her to develop a very firm and unique faith of her own. She believed in the Lord, but more so she believed in what belief did for humanity, and while she had heard stories of gigantic demons from the east she hardly believed them.
To hear that they had been perceived by at least one other to be so human - with flaw, with fears, with weaknesses - was a relief. If Judith had seen it, then so could others. "It is an exhilarating thought, is it not?" She said with a small sigh. "To know that a life free of our particular restrictions lays just beyond our gilded stone and glass cages. It is even more exciting to get a taste of it."
“And King Ecbert was in contact with them, was he not?” she inquired as she poured them each a goblet of wine, offering one to Judith. “Forgive me my rudeness, I am simply curious - I have never seen anything quite like them before.”

Judith followed after her, and waited until Gisla sat down before allowing herself to sit. She swallowed at the mention of the attack on Northumbria and bit her lip. “Yes… they… attacked and burned a monastery.”
“And King Ecbert was in contact with them, was he not?” she inquired as she poured them each a goblet of wine, offering one to Judith. “Forgive me my rudeness, I am simply curious - I have never seen anything quite like them before.”
“He fascinates me.”
