“The flaneur finds the world picturesque,” Susan Sontag writes in On Photography. The 20th-century writer wasn’t the first to highlight flaneurs. Baudelaire first described them in a 19th-century Paris booming with boulevards, cafes, parks. The new creative class of artists, writers and thinkers took to the gas-lit streets to explore the suddenly dynamic, always beautiful, city. “The lover of universal life enters the crowd as though it were an immense reservoir of electrical energy,” he wrote.
