On Friday, Flat Stanley reaches Wilkes-Barre! He's tired and needs the weekend off, so he's coming home to the classroom on Monday to say hi to everyone after his long trip. He left Colorado on Monday and visited Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and finally Pennsylvania!
As they drive through Cleveland, Flat Stanley stops at Lake Erie to see the sunrise. It's really early in the morning, but very beautiful and the lake is so big, it looks like an ocean! Lake Erie is one of the 5 Great Lakes: Erie, Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Ontario. They are the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth and hold 21% of the world's lake fresh water. On the other side of Lake Erie, Flat Stanley could see Canada!
On Friday, Flat Stanley is almost to Mrs. Lawrence's classroom! Look at the map to follow his trail. He's almost home!
Flat Stanley spent the night in Cleveland and at the house he had a big surprise! He got to meet a Ring-Tailed Lemur named Leo! Leo is from Madagascar, the island off of Africa where all lemurs come from. He was cute and friendly, but a little shy. Look at the video of the lemur climbing around his jungle-gym.
The group had to hit the road, so Flat Stanley drove through Indiana and into Ohio! The car was on the highway, so Flat Stanley didn’t have time to get out and take a picture with the signs. He was too excited to get to the next stop!
The next stop for Stanley was Illinois! He was excited to stop in the Japanese Garden in the town of Rockford, IL where he got to feed the Koi fish. Koi look like giant goldfish, but are actually a type of fish called Carp, which are very popular in ponds in Japan. Look at all the colors of fish!
In Wisconsin, Flat Stanley also got to play with Lindsay's bird Willie who is a cockatoo. Willie talked and laughed with Flat Stanley in bird-talk. If you wanted to meet a bird like Willie, you would have to go to Australia where Willie was born. He's been in America for his whole life though, and he's about 26 years old. He will probably live until he's 60 or 70!
While in Wisconsin, Flat Stanley gets to visit the Wisconsin Concrete Park where he sees some sculptures made by a very famous artist named Fred Smith. Fred made a lot of animals out of concrete, glass bottles, and stones. Flat Stanley got to ride on Paul Bunyan's Babe the Blue Ox (see BIG Paul in the background), a plow horse, and a deer. He also caught a huge fish called a Northern Pike!
The group reaches Wisconsin, their 5th state!
What does Minnesota mean?
FUN FACT:
Flat Stanley learned that state is named after the Minnesota river. 'Minni' comes from the Sioux Indian word for sky colored. The river has a sky blue color because it has minerals in it.
The Susquehanna River is also an Indian word. 'Hanna' is the Algonquin indian name for river.
The travelers spent all day in the car going across South Dakota. Now that they are in Minnesota they are planning to stop for a break.
After Deadwood, the group found themselves near Mount Rushmore. They decided to make a quick stop to see the MONSTROUS stone faces.
FUN FACT:
It took almost 15 years for the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln to be carved into the mountain. Imagine how long 15 years is: if you are 7 now, and the sculpture was just being started, you'd be 23 when they are finished!
While driving through South Dakota they took a break in a little town called DEADWOOD. Like many of the towns in the Wild West, Deadwood was settled by people looking for gold. Flat Stanley didn't have time to pan for gold but he did hang out with the town's sheriff, Wild Bill Hickok.
After they cross in into South Dakota Flat Stanley, Lindsay and Randy decide to take a rest. They have only begun their travels and and Flat Stanley already is tired of sitting in the car!
What is the animal in the pictures above?

FUN FACT:
Flat Stanley learned that the animal is a bison, NOT a buffalo! A 'buffalo" actually means a water buffalo and to find one you need to travel to Asia or Africa. The bison are the animals that live and roam on the praries and grasslands of North America. You can see them in some of our National Parks!
Their first state that they cross into is Wyoming.

Flat Stanley learned that the state of Wyoming is named after the town; Wyoming, Pennsylvania!
The car is packed, and so are Flat Stanley's bags. They say goodbye one last time before they leave. The high Colorado Mountains still have snow on them and as the snow continues to melt, it fills the rivers and streams with water.
