i’m not my season

Skin on my skin I can feel the scurf and sand on your broad and speckled shoulders it has been a difficult year and for an afternoon we can lay on the strand hold hands as the waves crash around us observing the great machine at work.

In the pallid morning light the winter barely over I will hold you and encircle you a soft wave around your driftwood body, show you summer’s warmth with these hands hands which planted the garden and held the newborn calf and pulled the boat in from the sound’s waters.

Older now but still swelling with the flame of affection and the burning of trust -  we’re not the season we’re in.

I crave that summer light on you and in the warmth of the setting sun time has no hold over us but I will hold on to you.

Borrow, borrow, borrow - in the lonesome night’s light I recall how I have borrowed  many things: the affection of lovers, the words that drip from their open mouths, the deepest and warmest sanctums they have.

Indeed I have borrowed many things and with them borrowed regret. I have been a Ulysses tied to the mast; I have thrashed against the cords that bound me thinking only of the stark and eager siren. I have been too young to know that the words I said back in those times of softness would weave themselves deep into the fibers of their heart muscles.

And one day I saw you walking in the plaza, maybe it was an ancient city, in your sweetly patterned dress in the crowd more alluring with every step the bright light of remorse blinding me. I remembered how we experienced each other’s bodies but perhaps we never experienced each other at all.

Some lost face - 

Some bright day - 

I remember you carrying the fruit and herbs from the garden - would that I could lay you down between the rows.

I will be your mirror, reflecting your face and golden beauty and the warmth of your body waiting, expecting, open.

I stroke your hair when you are unwell; I hold my hand over your resonant heart; I take your body in my willing hands and I remind you how it feels to be deeply touched.

Like the water that ebbs and sometimes swells like a wave - will you let me wash over you?

The door is open and know I will always  welcome you in.

Red wool blanket in the morning Red blood moon in the evening Red tulips in the morning Red wine lips in the evening I'll carry you to our shared room and take you home again and again

In the morning light another day reminds us of the cycles of time and love That undulate as we do in the middle of the night

mykonos

Oh, oh

We slam the door and skip through the summer’s heat Dust following us as we go Down to the coast, a gentle curve Where we can be alone. As the sun sets, our shadows on the beach a tangle of limbs and hair and faces close together. We do not think of the messes we have made. We think only of Mykonos and how the sun warmed our skin and we rejoiced in the openness of the other.

And oh

In winter, as the snow falls outside and the pines sway in the cold air, In the night I feel for you I can hear your mind as it fills with thoughts all night but our bodies, together remind you what it means to be an animal.

And oh

I remember how I lay you down In the brown meadow of winter. Wherever you go today Remember me in the field Walking, a friend.
